Repeal citizens united. Educate our youth. Healthcare for the population. Make an effort to protect our environment. Proven track record of being right more often than your favorite politician at crucial moments in history.

Off the top of my head to get it out of that shit of a thread that is Trump.

So I’ll ask again what’s the problem? What am I missing? Educate me.

My first question: where is the money going to come from?

Another favorite of his... we could start by working on the massive income inequality in this country. Taxes of course. Corporations and the rich is a good start. Cut defense spending. May or may not be a good start.

It’s funny that money is one of the main arguments against Bernie. I at least trust the man to do with government spending what he says he will do. Definitely not tax cuts for the rich. I obviously don’t have the exact numbers in front of me or how much it’ll all cost in the end but I will never be convinced it cannot be done. Especially if you’re giving up before you even try.

Yes to some of his ideas. No to others. No to Bernie. His had his shot.

The man has never had his shot. From being mocked throughout his political career to getting railroaded by the DNC in 2016. His real shot is 2020. No more games.

Trump = Bernie is your argument? He has been a lifelong politician not some reality show host. I have a hard time believing he has no plan. He would have kept us out of war in the Middle East all these years. He has been trying to fight the growing income disparity in this country for 30 years. Some plans... the comparisons to Trump are so lazy.

Bullshit. He ran in 2016 in an uphill battle against Hillary, but he also had the benefit of being her only challenger. That gave him an unusually high amount of visibility that he was unable to capitalize on and break through. He is 76 years old. It's time for him to step into a mentoring, rather than starring role.

So we are going to tax the rich. Then when that isn't enough (because it won't be) they'll just move down to the middle class. No thanks.

I threw in defense spending as well but let’s skip over that. I’m sure there’s more before we get to the middle class.

He would have been right about Iraq.  That would have nice if he were President for a day in 2002.  Meanwhile, virtually everything he says about fiscal policy is either vague platitudes or outright unrealistic nonsense, such that his supporters have to say what Trump supporters say about Trump: “I don’t have any numbers in front me or know how it will work, but I trust the man!”

He would have been right dating back to the fucking Persian Gulf. When it comes to Bernie everyone acts like every politician has a fucking balance sheet presentation on every point they make as soon as they make it. What is unrealistic? Education? Healthcare?

And it amazes me how we gloss over important things like keeping the country out of war for 20 plus years. Or beating a dead horse over income inequality. The only one willing to stand up and say anything about such important topics that would have changed the course of this country long ago. Let’s dismiss that vision and leadership. It means absolutely nothing.

Tell me more about repealing Citizens United. Is that an executive order thing or does he say it three times into a mirror or what?

Perhaps. The mirror thing would be cool. Wouldn’t put it past Bernie to tell the population to march in front of the Supreme Court either. Point being it’s been his position from the start. Another important issue that would have changed this country for the better.

And the age thing... ageism the last frontier. I get it most of you old fucks don’t do much of anything all day and get tired walking your dog to the front yard to take a shit. Even at his age Bernie has shown more energy than the majority of politicians and I would wager more energy than those making these age comments. Definitely more than my lazy ass. But go ahead and say what the man can and cannot do because of his age. Good argument.

I’ve seen this movie. At UT had a class on the economics of scarcity. Great class. Teacher was a rapid socialist but he was one of the best I ever had. We read Das Kapital and the rest. Same pitch different messenger.

Nothing Bernie says hasn’t been said by Marx and the rest of his ilk.

It’s not income inequality and the rest of the smoke and mirror leftist talking points. It’s the entitlements that are breaking the bank.

Hard pass.

And another thing... what the f is income inequality?

You have value. The things you can do provide some value either to yourself in the form of self employed income or to your employer in the form of wages.

Don’t like your pay - do something else.

Don’t like the fact that you as a women or whatever get less than a man - this is false by the way. Go on your own.

It’s like I’m taking crazy pills.

I honestly think a split is coming soon on the Democratic side of the equation.  On the right its between the Tea Party/Trump types and the more moderate parts of the GOP.  On the left, I think the party will divide with the more extremist socialist side of the party waging war against the more moderate Dems.  Like Ocasio-Cortez I think.

So I don't think Bernie is going to run, but I think whomever he passes the mantle of his followers to has a legit shot and winning a come out of nowhere type of win on the Democratic side of things.

Who pays for all his great ideas of free education and a house in every pot ?  I like the guy, but his ideas aren't fiscally feasible without huge tax increases or he has to figure out how to stop the current rate of gov't waste and inefficiency.

If the democrats split they won;t win the WH for a while. Honestly I'd love to see both parties fall into inter party civil war, and a third moderate centrist party emerges to blow them both out of the water.

Einstein’s another good one. This isn’t going to become some sort of Soviet Russia government. What entitlements are breaking the bank?

Income inequality where those at the top have so much money and power which enables them to do things like lobby for their own special laws in government. Or where large corporations with billionaire owners who pay shit wages to those without education or means to get a better paying job. They’ll just get government assistance you pay for anyway. But yea tell the poor fuck who grew up in a shit environment with shit schools and shit leadership or parenting fuck you find another job paying you another buck an hour dumbass. Or go back to school put yourself in massive debt and we hope you find something. If not we’ll fuck you too. Bc not your problem right? Maybe you are taking crazy pills the ones where you value green paper over the lives of the next man. Destroy the environment so we can spit out more useless shit. Nevermind the generations that will follow you. It’s American capitalism. It’s what you know what you grew up with. It’s hard to shake.

All valid points. I hear you.

I don’t have all the answers beyond some basic macro principles.

Taxing individuals beyond say 30% is bad. Let them keep their money.

Only pay for the things you have to have.

Printing money to buy things you can’t afford is evil and generational theft.

Stuff like that.

Yeah, I've just grown tired of everyone telling me the system is fine and to just keep working the way we have. The system is fucking broken and it's in need of major overhaul. We've swung too far to one side (on many fronts) and we need to correct or we'll capsize.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: i am in favor of the government taking only what it needs; i support universal healthcare; i detest abortion but do not believe it should be banned; i believe love is love; i believe in science; i believe in your right to worship as you please, but keep it yourself (and especially out of my laws); i believe weed (and most drugs, honestly) should be decriminalized and regulated; i believe we need to a robust but humane border policy; same for mental health; i think guns should be accessible but regulated, but it is possible for you to lose access to them; i think education is and should be our top priority at all levels and bring back trade programs - don't just prep for college; i don't believe corporations are people; i believe they should be taxed fairly and fined heavily for moving jobs or money out of the country; campaigns should be publicly financed; i believe our military should be the best in the world, but we could and should cut spending.

I could go on, but those are the highlights. Bernie was only candidate so far in my lifetime that checked off all of those boxes.

I don't know if he would have been great. With this Congress he'd likely have been neutered. But i know he would have been better than this shitshow. You'll likely never convince me otherwise.

We need him to MENTOR the next group of leaders, not be the guy. We need a Ross Perot type who crunches the numbers and has the personality to get us to swallow the bitter pill, but it would help immensely if the leaders had lots of time to continue the work . Also, we need to keep our 1% in check. They are fucking us and stealing more and more of the wealth AND opportunities of this country by their infinite and infernal greed. We need more balance or there will be pitch forks by the young, frustrated and under employed/paid.

I had the benefit of parents and a state that thought educating my young ass was a priority. I came out of college debt free. Young people today can't say that and have a big heavy load on their shoulders before they can even buy decent cars or housing, not to mention starting a family. Some are starting families even with this debt and qualify for assistance that wouldn't be needed if we gave a shit about educating them without having such a fucking burden placed on them.

I want to dig up Ross P. and make him help us now. He was a weird pedantic dude but I think he had a vision of what we needed to do to right the ship AND create discipline in our spending as individuals and as a nation. What is happening now is fucking unsustainable. And sadly, there will be revolution in my lifetime if we don't work to solve our fucking issues together. We are all in this and old man Bernie can mentor but he isn't the one to lead because it is too much work. We need him to help the younger generations so they can build us back to where we want to be.

I think a big problem with kids today is that the parents impress upon them the importance of getting a degree but not what to major in. The whole "do what you love" is bad advice if their kid loves something that isn't in demand. I didn't study electrical engineering because it was fun, I studied it because I knew there would be plenty of opportunities for me when I graduated. It was 5 years of bullshit, but it was worth it. College isn't for everyone. Learn a trade or join the military. Use the Pell Grant if you are poor. There are plenty of opportunities for people to make a better life for themselves.

Spot on.

The days of having a degree in "whatever" and expecting that to carry you were over 15 -20 years ago.

I was fortunate to use my liberal arts ed (Government) until I went to law school later on.  Wife got a business degree and ultimately ended up in the corporate world.

Both of us came from the "wrong side of the tracks" and our UT educations allowed us to completely flip our life stations.  Our kids were and are counseled into STEM or Business, the "liberal arts" get taught at home.

Bernie does not scare me, I've seen this play before.  The rhetoric of making all corporations and anyone associated with a corporation out to be monsters is a tired scare tactic.

Rhetorical promising everything to everyone without an actual plan is the same shit as Trump (maybe that's why some Bernie support went to Trump?).

The issue isn't that some people are lazy while others work hard, that will unfortunately always be the case. The issue is our government enacting public policy that drives further income inequality.

Take the recent tax cut as an example. The data already shows that the majority of the tax revenue that the country gave up is being spent by corporations on stock buybacks and increasing dividends rather than new hiring or wage growth. The end result is the stock market keeps chugging along, but only half of Americans are invested in the market(the rich half). We're basically handing the ”haves" more money, while growing the deficit and doing nothing for the ”have nots”. If you are living paycheck to paycheck, how the hell are you going to invest in the market?

If a billionaire racks up another billion dollars, that money does nothing but sit in his back account. There's only so many fancy meals and vacations someone can take. If 10,000  low and middle class people suddenly had an extra $100k, its much more likely to get recycled into the economy. It's a blatent transfer of wealth to the people who already have more money than they can spend. I'm not advocating taking money from billionaires and redistributing it, but I am advocating public policy that doesn't further drive income inequality.

You're using hyperbole to accuse others of using hyperbole.

Despite impressions, there was not some great exodus of Sanders voters that voted for Trump- roughly 12% on the high side to 6% on the low. By comparison, 2008 Hillary primary voters showed considerably less loyalty to the Democratic nominee with a solid quarter of them voting for McCain.
That's the Democratic party in a nutshell.

What is your definition of rich?

Blue collar workers in corporations also have access to 401(k)s, if offered; and the equivalent offerings for public employees. I would argue that people in this category are not the "haves".

It's not hyperbole,  I've been listening to Bernie for a long time.

Also, I never claimed there was a great exodus of Sanders voters to Trump; hence, the use of the word "some".  Why would any Bernie voter jump to the Right side of Hillary?

As far as 2008, it stands to reason that some Dem Hillary voters on the far right of the spectrum would have more commonalities with McCain than O.

I don’t think Bernie is making anyone associated w a corporation out to be a monster. He’s simply pointing out there must be a some sort of paradigm shift on a host of issues. We are doing it wrong. Just bc you can point to Marxism and laugh at its failure doesn’t mean we are necessarily doing anything right. More than likely it’s we have both been going about it all the wrong way. Trump is the epitome of capitalism. He is it. It’s hard to admit if your a staunch defender but it’s the truth. Is it pretty to look at? Not from where I’m standing.

I am by no means saying Bernie is going to save the world. I am saying he provides the best path. The easiest path. The least resistance to trying to right this ship. His ideas represent that paradigm shift that is so desperately needed right now. He has the crossover appeal to some Trump supporters at a time the majority of them feel threatened. He has a little wisdom and vision. Let’s give him a chance before you call it rhetorical promising or his ideas pie in the sky. He hasn’t even had the opportunity or support to try much of anything he has promoted throughout the years.

It’s been sustainable for 200 so years. A blink of an eye to the billions this earth has been here. In that time we have managed to turn a green and blue planet to concrete weeds and a plastic ocean. There is nothing sustainable about it. Maybe for you in your lifetime. Lucky you. You have things happening now like children creating robots to clean up the ocean. Why? Because the kid has to make his home here looks around and sees no adults trying to solve the problem. They bicker amongst themselves like... kids.

Ok. So Bernie claims all corporations and anyone associated with a corporation is a monster. Does he specify which monsters? Godzilla? Mothra? Does he further parlay this into a corporations-aren't-people argument to attack Citizens United?

However, your paranoia leads you to believe that anyone not with you is somehow a right-winger. Good luck!

I’m pretty good at that and doesn’t take long. Kicks the multitasking into high gear. Don’t get me started on having control of my own body and mind...

Too late. It’s what this world needs now. Calling plants mushrooms and other naturally produced psychedelics drugs is what’s criminal. Not the substances themselves. Even beginning to be backed up scientifically once scientists were given permission to do science shit. The control we are under is maddening. Another bowl is in order.
