Bernie Sanders 2020 Watch

Dropout

Recommended Posts

Look at this track record. Can y’all stop this stupidity? We need real candidates. Unless there’s a post office that needs naming....

Sanders was the primary sponsor of seven pieces of legislation that were enacted, according to records:

H.J.Res. 132 (102nd): To designate March 4, 1991, as "Vermont Bicentennial Day."

H.R. 1353 (102nd): Entitled the "Taconic Mountains Protection Act of 1991."

H.J.Res. 129 (104th): Granting the consent of Congress to the Vermont-New Hampshire Interstate Public Water Supply Compact.

H.R. 5245 (109th): To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1 Marble Street in Fair Haven, Vermont, as the "Matthew Lyon Post Office Building."

S. 893 (113th): Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2013.

S. 2782 (113th): A bill to amend title 36, United States Code, to improve the Federal charter for the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

S. 885 (113th): A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 35 Park Street in Danville, Vermont, as the "Thaddeus Stevens Post Office."

Wal-Mart regularly encourages its workers to organize. Then Wal-Mart happily engages in collective bargaining with the union. It was, in fact, the first retailer in history to do this. When the workers have a problem, Wal-Mart doesn't say "shut up and stick to contract we agreed to", Wal-Mart quickly engages with the union's new requests.

This is all true and real and makes sense.

Walmart has a terrible history of working with hourly wage earners.  Sam's Club just closes shops.

If Walmart has suddenly embraced unions, please link.  I'd love to see a link to somewhere where they agreed to raise wages when a previous wage had been agreed to, outside of the conclusion of the CBA.

It is full-on anybody-but-Bernie in corporate media. They fucking HATE him and don't even bother making arguments.
It's astonishing that Bernie is still #2 (just barely) in the RCP average of polls with basically 3 months of media hate thrown at him.

That clip is completely over the line.

But do you seriously think Bernie is the only candidate getting unfairly shit on by the MSM?

"Unfairly shit on"? Bernie's #1 by a country mile.

Biden's been getting a lot of shit, but it's fair and deserved. Should be worse, in fact.

Warren is benefiting heavily from positive/uncritical media coverage.

The same for Kamala, but somewhat less. She made a bold move during the debates and the media LOVES drama.

Pete is #1 in the "media darling" rankings and only exists in the Top 5 because he captured the hearts of the Professional Media Class.

Beto has been largely ignored for a few months. Dismissing someone as non-existent is worse for poll numbers, in some ways, than attacking and lying about them. Negative press is at least press.

The persecution complex of the Berners might be their biggest liability.  Bernie gets as much cable news face time as anyone to make his case and defend himself from attacks.

Is there a bias against him from the corporate powers? Yeah sure, the same goes for Elizabeth Warren but you don’t hear her or her supporters constantly bitching about it and looking for things to be outraged over.  She just moves on making her case and fighting on.  However, she did rhetorically burn Fox News to the ground when she was given the opportunity.  Bernie? Not so much, he will gladly go on Fox News to do a town hall.

It’s a challenging position to hold that the media is against you while constantly exploiting the same media to get your message out.  However, this approach has worked and been perfected by Trump so it might work for Bernie. Who knows.

you should update your calendar.  deserved or not, pete hasn't had "media darling" status in 2 months.

Near the end of primary season.

So if he's Deadman Walking 2.0 after Beto in a few months, you do think he will fight another war of attrition and try and outlast the seige, Victory or Death with God looking down upon him and he found 60 beaves-style?

Absolutely. He's not tapping out until it's clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that he won't have enough delegates to be the nominee.

He has a committed following.  He will do what he did in 2016 and try to get concessions out of it.

the longer he waits to drop out, the worse it is for warren.

Disagree.  I used to think this but after watching the strategy of both campaigns I think Bernie helps Warren by driving voters away from the Bidens and the other establishment types.  This leaves them a choice between Bernie and Warren.

Bernie is pushing voters away from the establishment front runners and Warren is pulling those voters in by offering a very sound and coherently positive alternative.

Bernie’s movement isn’t seeing much growth yet, Warren’s movement has been a slow and steady climb throughout which is a good indication it’s real and sustainable.

Bottom line is Bernie needs to grow his base faster if he wants to stay in this thing.  This next debate will be a great opportunity for both to demonstrate who is the real leader now in grassroots populist politics.  It could be a major inflection point in the Bernie/Warren contest.

What is the connection between the debate and grassroots movements?

Nothing really.  They're both grassroots populists.  The debate will be an opportunity for both to demonstrate leadership skills which is where I think this contest is settled.  Who can come off looking like a President of the United States the most.

while what you're saying might be true, the key is getting biden out of the top spot, seizing momentum, and have that dictate the news cycles and therefore the polls (not to mention the fundraising).  if/when bernie drops out, assuming his support goes largely to liz (not to mention the organizing by the bros to assist in this), then it could push her into a lead she never relinquishes.

it's not about strategy or policy.

biden's greatest strength right now is that he's the perceived front-runner, which gives him credibility in the general (because we know electability is important to most voters).  we need to get him out of the top spot.

I would say Biden loses the top spot after the next debate, but I actually think he got a good draw going up against Kamala again. He'll be on the offensive and might be able to get a little revenge in Round 2.

He's more than likely to step on his dick and fall off the stage.

Which, for him, will be the most forward movement he's made since he jumped in.

Lessons learned from 2016: Zero

The debates don't really matter at all to anything but media narrative, which doesn't really matter that much aside from polling 400 years before any voting takes place. Now, if your candidacy is entirely dependent on media narrative (Pete, Beto) then that's big, but neither Bernie nor Liz need the media at this point to stay alive.

Determining who "is the real leader now in grassroots populist politics" isn't about debates. It's about organization on the ground and the size/motivation of your base. It also has to do with the makeup of your base (class, etc...). The reality is that Bernie is the clear leader in basically any terms you could come up with and Liz is 2nd. And the two of them are significantly ahead of all others.

Just now, Hugo Stiglitz said:

Bernie is never dropping out.  I've come to accept this because he is Bernie.  It will not matter if his support drops to 1%, he's in it for the long haul as long as he has the money.

A problem we might see in Liz's campaign is that her current supporters might not be durable. There are people who have been there since she announced, but that number isn't very large (look at her anemic Q1 performance), and those who are pumping her very hard right now only arrived there recently. While this might be understandable for a newcomer like Pete or even Kamala, Liz's name recognition was very high going into this contest (Biden & Bernie in the 90s, Liz in the 80s) and when she announced it was known she would run for a long time.

Bernie's problem in this way is, obviously, how much he is hated by upper-class whites and whether or not he can expand his base by overcoming that.

In my view Bernie is already toast as far as the nomination goes.  Too many democrats hate him and too much bad blood from 2016. I could be wrong.

Bernie’s campaign still has value as far as messaging and driving the conversations on the issues that matter most to voters (healthcare/education).  I’m glad he’s a part of this primary process, he’s forcing the other candidates to perform better.

Bernie and Biden, sitting in a tree. From the Gallop link:

In a Gallup poll conducted shortly after the first round of Democratic debates, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden continue to enjoy the highest favorability ratings of all major Democratic contenders among the party's base. Both are viewed favorably by roughly seven in 10 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents. Eight other candidates tested in the poll fall below 60% favorability, but this is mainly because they are less well-known, not because they are disliked.
