There's tons of ubers in Detroit.

This isn't like going to Manhattan Kansas or Stillwater Oklahoma or any other shitty ass place not in a major city. It's like going to cowboy stadium in Arlington from anywhere in the metroplex. That's exactly what it's like. Cost, time, traffic, parking etc.

This. Ann arbor and Detroit are pretty much one in the same, location wise

Hell, the Woodlands is farther from Houston than Ann Arbor is from Detroit. Why all the hamd wringing? Rent a goddamn car

Some of us aren’t hobos subsisting off of a fucking nurse’s salary. I want to be effectively delivered to the gate without so much as having to utter a hello to the various henryjames’ and immamacs plebeians on the way there. I generally work my plans backward from the gate and choose the snobbiest, cleanest, most elitist options I can rationalize.

This is right down the road from my parents. I grew up stealing from that Meijer. If you see an old guy sitting at the bar at Twin Peaks by himself with a big smile on his face tell my Dad sup.

Probably too short of a trip to plan meals around but if you're hungry and like Mediterranean check it out Sheesh in Livonia. Get the chicken sajji.

Hope you all have fun. And win by a lot. 🙂

Any recs for Friday night in Detroit?

Looking at pre-dinner drinks at Kamper Rooftop and dinner at Selden Standard, followed by live music somewhere (seems like Midtown is the hub for that?)

I do not really go out anymore but here is a link. Selden Standard is supposed to be awesome.

Awesome, that is where I made a reservation on Friday. It was between that and Oak and Reel which online also looked good.

As a note, the area between Orchestra  Hall and SS is fine, but IME the other directions can get desolate and sketchy quick.

Also, the area around the Shinola hotel is lots of fun, and I really enjoy Le Supreme, which is located in that area.

I think greektown is pretty sketchy these days on the weekends, as well, no? Old man voice when I lived downtown in the early 00s that was the only place to go. I think I have heard that casino is now the worst of the 3. In general I have never felt unsafe downtown. I worked in downtown Pontiac for a few years and it felt much sketchier to me than Detroit.

Tbh, I don’t know. Casinos aren’t my thing. But Pontiac can be sketchy for sure. Did you leave MI?

Left after I graduated from MSU for Austin. Lived there a couple of years, moved back, didn't want to live with my parents and one bedroom apartments were cheaper downtown than in Royal Oak so I lived dowb there for a couple of years, working in Dearborn. I'm in Troy now. Are you in Lake Orion?

Will be in East Lansing the day after the game. What is there to do?

East Lansing is a piddly college town. Very different vibe from big city Ann Arbor. The main drag is Grand River, with "downtown" East Lansing on one side and campus on the other. As LO said upthread, campus is beautiful, especially the North end, close to Grand River. Once you get to the river, the other side is pretty meh but just on the other side of the river is Spartan Stadium and Breslin to the West. There is a Hall of Champions or something in the lobby at Breslin if you're into hoops and you just might see Izzo on his office patio right outside that area and he will talk to you if you do. The football stadium is dumpy but worth seeing I guess.

Walk campus, go to Beaumont Tower, get ice cream at the Dairy Store. Visit the Broad art museum if that's your thing.

East Lansing itself, mostly local bars and chain restaurants. I'm biased but people and students in town are pretty outgoing and friendly. Crunchy's and the Peanut Barrel for burgers. The best place to stay is the Marriott on M.A.C. or the new hotel, Graduate. There is apparently a cool bar on the roof up there but I haven't been there.

I hope the fall weather cooperates that weekend. It's a really nice time of year. Probably a little early for the leaves changing colors but a nice pleasant 75-80 during the day and a crisp 50-55 at night.

Yep. I’m a professor at Oakland and I live in LO with my wife, also a Texas graduate. 🤘🏻

I have low key love for OU and Coach Kampe. Seems like a great dude.

I just realized that the Lions are hosting the Rams that weekend on SNF. Anyone doing the double header?

I assume there will be a paid shuttle service from the MGM to AA that morning, though it needs to be really early to allow for time to enjoy a campus walk and the tailgates.

I appreciate all the great thoughts here. I’m traveling with a group of 6. Mainly a group of carnivores. And for sure want to hit a local spot…no chains. What’s my best bet for Friday night without reservations? I’ll review the previous posts/thread. But if I never make it back to Detroit….where is the must go or two? TIA!

Man so many good spots.

There's this place called the mansion that's got an insane Wellington.

There's a restaurant attached to moms spaghetti. Both it and moms spaghetti are really fucking top notch. It's right next to Caesars arena.

Gotta try coney island if you want a snack.

Did your group buy tailgate tickets already? Haha

Thanks for the thoughts. Not yet on tailgate. A couple of the guys have their girlfriends/wives in tow and I haven’t met them yet…which is why I haven’t booked any restaurants etc…we will for sure be discussing the tailgate this weekend. We will need a spot to hang out certainly after the game…and very likely before.

Forgot to mention….one of the people we are meeting (outside the six Longhorn fans) is a UM alumn and buddy of one of our party members. He told the group he had passes for something…I’m sure it will be all blue…I may escape…

Ours will be better. We are right next to gameday and have a whole hog

For you veterans of AA, what’s a good Friday night spot in the north campus area (staying at the Graduate) to get a little rowdy without being in a 100% student situation? I don’t really GAF about craft cocktails but don’t really want to be the only old dudes at the bar….

Should be DJs at Pretzel Bell and LoFi, right next to each other. Also might want to try the second floor at Circ, though that can get studenty, though nowhere near 100%. Old dudes welcome at essentially all places on game weekends, but you want to be on that side of downtown to avoid students. The further east you go, the more studenty it is, as a rule, with the e/w dividing line kind of being Division Street.

Are you talking Friday evening?

Or early Saturday morning, with the implication the tailgate lot won't be open yet?

If Friday evening, I'd suggest anywhere outdoors and downtown, because it's central. If you're a craft beer guy, I suggest the Grotto, since there's a lot of outdoor seating near the sidewalk and people could just swoop through and grab their wristbands without having to buy anything. Alternatively, and probably better, downtown Ann Arbor will be pedestrianized and go-cups are allowed in a designated downtown area. You could post up with a couple chairs and a table on the corner of Main and Liberty or something like that and just chill with some go-cups from Pretzel Bell or one of the other bars that participates in the go-cup program.

Kicking myself for not mentioning this before, but if you don't have the beer situation figured out, an old baseball buddy of mine owns the Blue Front, about a block and a half from your location. PM me if you want a connection there.

The weather is going to suck for you guys. I was really hoping you would get some beautiful early fall football weather. Cold front coming in on Friday and bringing rain. Probably going to be grey, cold and rainy on Saturday.

It’s been hot in Texas, we are ok with the cold front.

what’s the to go cup program? can I use my own to go cup and just pour a beer in it? Most people I’ve talked to in AA said cops don’t really enforce open container on cans if you have a coozie and don’t act like a jackass. if that’s an inaccurate, let us know.

I waited too long to grab a tailgate ticket, are there any bars near the stadium that you’d recommend that has good beer options and we can leave with said beer?

Unlikely you'd have an issue, especially on game day. We live about a 7 minute walk from Main Street and usually have an en route beer in a solo cup on our way there. But I'd never say never.

The go cup program is only in the greater downtown area, kinda like how I recall Memphis having a go cup zone only in Beale Street. Here's a link to a page about it with a map: https://mainstreetannarbor.org/social-district
