Going back to Tesla financials and see how much they're relying on their regulatory credit income. But then also remembering how this administration is looking to cut emissions standards for manufacturers, seems... suboptimal for the company.

Although I'm sure there will be some sort of weird carveout for that dipshit. Unless he really pisses off Bessent, who would get in tfg's ear. FAFO

At some point, the idea of regulatory credits becomes outdated with EVs becoming mainstream and the government should do away with them and go to a straight penalty system for noncompliance instead. Instead of private industry profiting off of regulatory compliance the government can use it as a funding source.

Just wanted to chime in and say I appreciate the way you've spoken about these issues.  I am starting to suspect that someone I am close to -- not family, but someone I've known for decades -- may in fact be on that spectrum.  You are describing their decision-making habits spot on.

If you have a close enough relationship with them perhaps find a time when you two can talk face-to-face. I will say that they might scoff at you for suggesting it. I did the same thing when an ex of mine first told me she suspected it with me years ago. I told her no way was she right. I remember calling her four years later to tell her that she was right. My best friend of 20 plus years now never even bothered to tell me. He keeps it to himself. I remember telling him when I figured it out and he says to me “Welcome to the club.” I say that just to say reactions vary, but if that’s the case with the person you know then I hope things go well.

I’m not an expert in startups, debt  or how they raise funds but this seems fishy to me.

recap:

  • Elon valued xAI at $80b (btw, he had no concrete justification for this) before the company absorbed Twitter last month.
  • Twitter was valued at $33b in equity with that deal. Twitter and Elon also carried ~$13b debt which he has to raise to buy Twitter in the first place.

today (cnbc link):

  • Elon now wants to raise $20b from new investors valuing the combined company at $120b.
  • It’s Elon’s claim that perhaps as much as tens of billions were created in immediate synergies even though the 2 companies previously had zero constraints from working together. The synergies should have already been realized even if they could be created.

Conclusion: Elon couldn’t manage the Twitter debt reported to be upwards of $1.5b annually all while Twitter revenues plummeted under his watch. Add the Tesla sales and stock price worries, I see Elon as the guy at the casino ATM pulling money from his credit card and heading back to the blackjack table.

Elon Musk's public image is becoming increasingly toxic, per the latest NYT/Sienna polling out yesterday.

He's at -21 (56% unfavorable/35% favorable) and almost as many people have a "very unfavorable" view (44%) than favorable/somewhat favorable/somewhat unfavorable combined (48%). Also, looking at the gender gap, he might be one of the most reviled men in the country among women (-34), which is unsurprising, given that he has seemingly approached most of them with breeding propositions.

All in all, a genuinely impressive feat of self-destruction. As someone said in a Twitter post I saw earlier, "who voluntarily signs up to become the face of canceling Meals on Wheels and cancer research?"
