One thing about the new Twitter/X is that without authentic verification, the Nazis can easily have multiple accounts similar to what this woman did with hers. She has at least 3 accounts apparently. People did that on the Dorsey version as well, but there was an attempt at least to minimize some of the damage due to bot swarms of hate, etc.

also, Musk in the last 30 days has 2000+ tweets! which are numbers only exceeded by these people

9mrqpy4jqcb41.jpg

for comparison here are how many tweets the other accounts in the top 10 most followed (per social blade) have sent in the last 30 days

  • Obama: 23
  • CR7: 20
  • Bieber: 0 (actually he deleted 4 in the last 30 days so he has -4)
  • Rihanna: 11
  • Katy Perry: 29
  • Nardendra Modi (indian PM): 589
  • Taylor Swift: 14
  • Trump: 0
  • Ariana Grande: 113

looking at the rest of the top 25 with a notable # of tweets

  • NASA: 164
  • youtube: 390
  • Kim Kardashian: 39
  • X: 51
  • CNN: 192
  • CNN Breaking News: 160
  • NYT: 1813

NYT is #25 in followers.

so just to be clear, he has more tweets in the last 30 days than the #2-24 most followed accounts on his website...combined

all while, on paper, being the CEO of SpaceX, the CEO of Tesla and the CEO of Twitter.

edward-norton-as-miles-bron-in-glass-oni

i kind of love how this guy has gone from a misunderstood genius to someone who is going to be a case study for how not to run a business, any business. terrible rebrands, terrible business decisions DAILY, fumbling a years long lead on EVs, waiving due diligence, firing off dumb lawsuits, major course changes within days/weeks/months of making the decision, horrible executive hiring practices, etc

what a fucking moron.

Musk is an idiots/poors version of what a CEO is.

Tesla driver on Autopilot caused fatal Highway 522 crash, police say

The driver was reportedly on his phone with his Tesla on Autopilot on Friday when he crashed into Jeffrey Nissen, killing him.

MALTBY — A Tesla driver who had set his car on Autopilot was “distracted” by his phone before reportedly hitting and killinga motorcyclist Friday on Highway 522, according to a new police report.

Around 3:45 p.m., a Snohomish man in a 2022 Tesla Model S was driving home behind a motorcyclist at Fales Road in Maltby, according to the report.

The man, 56, had activated Tesla’s Autopilot feature. He was using his phone when he heard a bang as his car lurched forward and crashed into the motorcycle in front of him, troopers wrote.

The motorcyclist, Jeffrey Nissen, was ejected. The Tesla was lodged on top of him, police said.

The Tesla driver exited his car and called police. Nissen died at the scene. He was 28.

Using sobriety and drug recognition tests, authorities determined the driver was not impaired by drugs or alcohol, according to the report. Troopers arrested the Tesla driver for investigation of vehicular homicide while driving distracted.

Troopers wrote the driver’s inattention while his car was on Autopilot, “putting the trust in the machine to drive for him,” gave them probable cause to arrest the man. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail.

Tesla’s Autopilot feature has come under regulatory and legal scrutiny. Since 2019, at least 17 people have been killed in crashes involving Teslas in Autopilot mode, The Washington Post reported in June.

The crash came a day before Tesla slashed the price of its Full Self-Driving software from $12,000 to $8,000.

The technology does not mean the car is autonomous. Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability are “intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment,” according to the company’s website.

The man posted $100,000 bail and was released from jail Sunday night.

Maybe so, but there are plenty of dipshits who also misunderstand cruise control.

This is my anecdotal evidence, but I get more reminders and warnings from my Tesla’s driver assist features than I have ever gotten from any other make of vehicle.

I have a Volvo that has TACC and lane-keeping.  I get nothing but a “ding” when I engage it.  I have also had it turn off the lane-keeping function with no notice multiple times.  It’s quite disconcerting.  I am far more comfortable using Tesla’s features than the Volvo’s.

...of course adaptive cruise control alerts you less than FSD. it exists for a very specific use case, has a much smaller scope and typically you don't have it on all the time.

...so of course it is going to drop in significantly fewer notifications than FSD Beta. or it certainly should.

here's what Volvo's website says about their Adaptive Cruise Control:

Quote

Adaptive Cruise Control helps your Volvo maintain a set speed or time interval in relation to the vehicle ahead.  This feature utilizes a camera as well as a radar sensor to detect slower moving vehicles ahead of you and automatically adjusts your Volvo's speed.  Once you are no longer behind the vehicle you will speed back up to your preset speed.  To activate the function, you must be driving at speeds 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher, the seatbelt needs to be fastened, and the doors need to be closed.

Note: This system is designed to be a supplementary driving aid.  It is not intended to replace the driver's attention and judgment.  Adaptive Cruise Control cannot cover all driving situations and traffic, weather and road conditions.  ACC is not a collision avoidance system!  It does not sense pedestrians, animals, bicycles, or motorcycles.  You, as the driver, are always responsible for braking the vehicle.

ACC is absolutely not a 1:1 comparison for FSD - and again, you know that.

come on, dude.

I should have been more clear.  I am comparing my experience with Tesla's TACC and Autopilot (lane-keeping) to my experience with Volvo's.  Tesla has more overt notifications when engaging these systems along with on-screen warnings as compared to Volvo.  Driver-monitoring is more frequent and obvious in the Tesla than the Volvo.

FSD is a different animal.

But that's the problem with a lot of the discussion in this thread.  People continually conflate Tesla's Autopilot features with FSD.  Tesla's "Autopilot" feature is simply TACC + Lane-keeping.  Tesla's Enhanced Autopilot takes it a step further and adds in automatic lane changes based on traffic conditions and set speed.  There is a third level of Autopilot called "Navigate on Autopilot" which will navigate highway interchanges and take highway exits.  FSD (Supervised) - the current revised Tesla nomenclature - does all of the above plus navigation on city streets.

The vehicle in the article above was in "Autopilot" = TACC + Lane-keeping.

That's a shitty and misleading name for a feature then. It should be actioned by the FTC because people are buying Tesla's thinking they can do autopilot, like the name would suggest.

And further, you're continuing to not address that your $10,000 paid beta software is just as poor at unsupervised driving as the current "norm"

Not a great performance by Tesla for sure.  One caveat that I will toss out there is that the tested version of FSD is a year old.  Current version is MUCH better.

Serious question as you seem to genuinely like the Tesla as a car and driving experience based on your posting history here: do you have any ethical qualms regarding being a current Tesla owner? On any level does it give you "the ick", as the kids say?

Obviously it's too late now, but if you had a choice to do it again, would you buy a different vehicle or buy a Tesla again, knowing all that you know (and have firsthand experienced as an owner)?

No ethical qualms at all.  I bought the vehicle in September of 2020 because of the technology and performance.  At the time, I also had Tesla home solar and Power Walls.  It was pretty cool having all three on the same app to manage.  The other deciding factor was the supercharging network.  No one else came close to providing the charging availability of the Tesla fleet.  It's still a huge competitive advantage for Tesla IMO.

Fast forward to now... I probably won't buy another Tesla unless the company regains some of its earlier focus on accelerating the transition to renewable energy.  The Cybertruck has been a huge misstep from concept to execution and has diluted the focus of the company.  I never bought into the cult of Elon, but I really loved the Tesla brand circa 2020.  To say the shine has come off is a huge understatement.

My next vehicle will probably be an F150 Lightning once Ford shifts over to NACS.

Tesla Driver Charged With Killing Motorcyclist After Turning on Autopilot and Browsing His Phone

Your Tesla is not a "self driving car" no matter how hard you want to believe it.

A 28-year-old motorcyclist died in Washington State on Friday afternoon because a dipshit Tesla driver rear-ended him at speed. A Snohomish man, 56, was commuting in his 2022 Tesla Model S when he activated the car’s camera-based advanced driver assist system and according to his statements to police, began looking through his phone. With nobody paying attention to the car’s actions, the Tesla software ignored Jeffrey Nissen on his motorcycle and continued on at speed. The car rear-ended the two-wheeler, Nissen was flung from the bike, and his life ended pinned underneath the electric car, where he was still lodged when police arrived to the scene.

The Tesla driver, who told police he was “putting the trust in the machine to drive for him,” was inattentive to the road in front of him, and was only brought back to reality when he “heard a bang as the car lurched forward.” The driver was not impaired by drugs or alcohol, though he admitted to having an alcoholic beverage prior to the 3:54 p.m. crash.

I hear you.  There are a lot of morons on the road and a lot of morons on the road in Teslas.

I get the sense that a large portion of Tesla’s early adopters bought their cars because of the technology and the perceived environmental benefits of EVs.  That group can be further broken down into technophiles and technoflexers.  The technophiles respected the technology and were genuinely interested in testing and experiencing it.  The technoflexers were more interested in creating viral videos of themselves sleeping behind the wheel while doing 80 on the freeway.  I think the technoflexers were a small, but very visible minority that saddled Tesla owners with a terrible image.

I say all of that to get around to this point - there have been a lot of FSD miles driven with very low accident rates.  Up until March of 2024,  there were only about 400K Tesla owners in the FSD beta program.  FSD beta has been in limited public release since October 2020, with more general availability since October 2022.  In 3.5 years, there have been very few accidents attributed to Teslas in FSD.   In March 2024, Tesla opened the floodgates and gave every Tesla driver a free month of FSD.  If this system was so irresponsible and inherently dangerous, we should have seen a spike of FSD-related accidents over the past month.  Maybe the data collection and reporting is lagging a bit, but we haven’t seen that spike as of yet.

In theory yes.

But the Board + Musk controls a lot of the shares. Combine that with so many shareholders being Elon stans it is very unlikely that you would get enough of a coalition to oust any of the Board. Even if you did, it would take a number of board seats, not just 1 or 2, to put Elon at risk.

Hell, just look at Disney, where an activist investor couldn't get on the board, even with a large number of shares in his corner.

Maybe the "you can easily keep consistent SPEED" when the road is flat, but when it's rolling at all, hills of any sort, "consistent pressure on the gas pedal" doesn't come close to maintaining a set speed.  Just set the cruise control, and it will make the adjustments for you as the road elevates and drops (even slight grades influence speed).

Of course, the worst was the absolute flaming asshole in the Porsche SUV who, when we got to a stretch where there was a passing lane (so then we had two lanes on our side, the right lane for slow traffic, the left for passing), got in the left lane....and then just MATCHED the speed of the truck next to him.  They drove side-by-side almost the whole stretch, till the very end, when he finally accelerated to pass the truck....and I used the last 100 yards of lane to do the same.  Fucking asshole.
