Wtf are you talking about? Twitter was the official platform for US policy 2016-2020. Cabinet members learned of their dismissal from tweets, not face to face conversation. Twitter may not have been growing rapidly by the time of its acquisition, but it wasn't hemorrhaging users and advertising partners like it is today. Not to mention it's significant loss of functionality and baseline usability since it's acquisition.

I guess I'm saying I don't disagree that other platforms are eating Twitter's lunch now, but I think that's a correlation not a causal link

It's the youths driving things.  Drives me nuts that so many of our younger relatives/friends are sending us Instagram and TikTok shit.

Meanwhile I've spent the past month getting a bunch of stuff setup on BlueSky, Threads, and Mastodon, because the project I'm working on has a lot of long form stuff that is better suited to those. Unfortunately the target demographic can't fucking make up its mind between those three as an alternative to twitter, so I'm also having to maintain a small twitter footprint as well.  But twitter continues to get worse and worse with porn/spam and I'm seeing more brands using the other platforms in parallel to twitter, so I'm able to do a lot less and use it solely to point people to other platforms or websites.

It feels like I'm seeing a lot more academics/writers on Threads.  I actually enjoy the conversations on Threads, as there's some cool people on there, and it feels kind of like what twitter was really early on.

BlueSky is a literal twitter clone, but they fucked up by not scaling up faster than they did (the backers had the money, they should have ditched the invite shit much, much earlier).

Mastodon has the most technically advanced client (including browser-based/web), but it still confuses some people.  With that said, the way the groups stuff works, once you know what you are doing, if you hit the right groups, it's pretty easy to acquire hundreds of followers at a time.

More to that. Google is your friend. Wrecked right when turning right. Advanced systems were not turned on (?) and could not be activated.

https://www.overdriveonline.com/regulations/article/15683877/tesla-semi-fire-took-50000-gallons-of-water-to-put-out-ntsb

"A 2024 Tesla Semi, a battery-electric truck-tractor, was involved in a single-vehicle crash while traveling east on Interstate 80 (I-80) near Emigrant Gap in Placer County, California," NTSB wrote. "The vehicle, operated by a Tesla, Inc. employee, was en route from Livermore, California, to a Tesla facility in Sparks, Nevada."

Spoiler

The Semi "departed the roadway to the right while navigating a right-hand curve and uphill grade" before striking a "traffic delineator permanently mounted on a steel post" and ultimately colliding "with a tree about 12.5 inches in diameter" and continuing "down an earthen slope to rest against several trees."

NTSB found the Semi was not able to engage its advanced safety features.

"While the Tesla Semi was equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), ADAS was not operational on the vehicle and could not be engaged at the time of the crash," NTSB wrote.

NTSB noted that I-80 at that location consists of two lanes in each direction with a maximum posted speed limit of 65 mph and 55 for commercial vehicles. The Tesla Semi has frequently been seen passing trucks in the left lane just 20 miles away up the Donner Pass section of I-80, but NTSB did not say if the Semi was speeding.

[Related: Tesla's Semi blows past diesels uphill, but do owner-ops care?]

After the impact, the "vehicle’s lithium-ion electric battery system ignited..., resulting in a postcrash fire," NTSB wrote. Thankfully, the driver was uninjured.

CHP, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) all deployed to the scene, along with a Tesla technical expert who assisted "in assessing high-voltage hazards and fire safety."

EV fires pose a novel threat to roadways and firefighting teams. In this case, CAL FIRE representatives told Overdrive that the blaze took hours of dousing to lower the temperature enough to even fly firefighting aircraft overhead.

Placer County places extensive restrictions on residential water use, and advises its residents to reduce use by doing things like turning off the water while soaping up your hands or installing low-flow toilets.

But the Tesla fire required "about 50,000 gallons of water to extinguish the flames and cool the vehicle’s batteries," NTSB said.

Are they using any self driving tech on their semis? It's not clear if that's what they mean by "advanced driver assistance systems" that failed to engage

What is this guy’s weird obsession with Mars?

This is just another rep of the elon musk playbook for wealth. Here's how it works:

  • pick a big ambitious sounding goal, preferably one where there are government subsidies in the vicinity (electrify transportation, make life multi-planetary, solve traffic by building tunnels), and where your competition is stodgy existing companies that listen to their lawyers and shareholders
  • make a bunch of insane promises that make this vision sound so good that you pull in investor money and idealistic, naive young engineers
  • coerce young engineers into working incredibly hard by massively overpromising schedules while encouraging them to disregard any existing best practices

This is not the worst way to do things, but it also explains why he has all these different companies -- he needs each one to be existentially focused on something for step 3 to work.

Twitter did not follow the playbook, and so he's run off the rails into "become a drug-addled dipshit fucking up democracy" territory, which is no good for anybody. Imagine if Howard Hughes had been able to live tweet his breakdowns to 100M people.

The quote was there is nothing for young people on twitter. DJT is the oldest presidential candidate to be in an election. The kids these days don't want that. They want things that are fresh, Twitter wasn't that.

And it wasn't that Twitter pre-acquisition was growing slowly, it was that it was shrinking. @atomheartbevo nailed it - the kids are driving the social media bus and Twitter was left behind long ago.

Bingo.

Twitter's only chance for growth/relevancy going forward is to pivot to a "new" audience (fascist fuckbags and their sympathizers....problem is, that helps accelerate the LOSS of non-fascist fuckbag Twitter users) and.....bots.  Lots, and lots, and lots of bots (which is pointless, because even if they pay to be a "member," that's a trickle of a revenue stream, and their presence is a guarantee that no large ad dollars will return).

Twitter was in trouble before Elon.  He's ensured that it is headed for irrelevancy/death....now, he just wants to use it as much as he can before it dies to try to turn our Republic into a fascist autocracy (and I'm sure his vision also includes "which I and I alone control").

He's a fucking villain.  And a fucking dumb one at that.

Space Karen also now fighting with the Australian government.

The assistant treasurer, Stephen Jones, said Musk’s comment was “crackpot stuff”. Jones told ABC TV that the government’s new bill on misinformation and disinformation was a matter of “sovereignty”.

“Whether it’s the Australian government or any other government around the world, we assert our right to pass laws which will keep Australians safe – safe from scammers, safe from criminals,” he said.

“For the life of me, I can’t see how Elon Musk or anyone else, in the name of free speech, thinks it is OK to have social media platforms publishing scam content, which is robbing Australians of billions of dollars every year. Publishing deepfake material, publishing child pornography. Livestreaming murder scenes. I mean, is this what he thinks free speech is all about?”

The federal aged care minister, Anika Wells, told ABC radio she had “yet to meet [a fascist] in the government”.

Australia’s misinformation legislation would give the communications watchdog powers to monitor and regulate content on digital platforms.

It would also allow it to approve an enforceable industry code of conduct or introduce standards for social media companies if self-regulation was deemed to fail.

This is not the first time Musk has battled Australian authorities.

In April the eSafety commissioner issued an edict to X to remove graphic content after clips of the Sydney bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel being stabbed remained on the platform.

During the months-long saga, Musk accused the government of suppressing free speech.

Several politicians hit back, with the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, labelling him an “arrogant billionaire”.

In June the eSafety commissioner discontinued the federal court proceedings. A separate administrative appeals tribunal review of the notice issued to X is expected to be heard in October.

The eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, told the ABC last month that X had seven ongoing legal matters with her office related to notices issued by the commissioner.

In the federal court this week X challenged a $610,500 fine issued last year, arguing the original notice was issued to what was then Twitter Inc, a company that ceased to exist in March 2023, and the legislation did not account for the merger. The court reserved its decision.

Separately, millions of users of X in Brazil were cut off from the platform this month after a dispute between the rightwing tech billionaire and Brazil’s top court over X refusing to purge anti-democratic and far-right voices from the site in the wake of the January 2023 uprising in the capital, Brasília, carried out by supporters of the former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.

Yes. Duh. Well, add in “completely made up Russian propaganda.” He loves that too.

I'm trying to recall if I've ever seen a government official allow themselves to be quoted saying anything similar.

More should. That’s literally what limits on speech - including here, with perhaps the most robust free speech protections in the world - have always been about. “Free speech” is not and never has been a complete and absolute right. You don’t get to advertise your sugar pills as “proven to cure cancer.” You don’t get to tell people “send me $20, and I promise you you’ll never get sick.” We can list all kinds of plainly and long-time prohibited “speech” for days.
Elmo knows none of that. Elmo is as much an actual free speech scholar as he is a fucking circus acrobat.

Unfortunately, because he’s deeeeeep in the Travco Dem circle the optics are bad so they had to outsource the job to Mackowiak and his captive DINOs and the Republican circle, who did about at well in a Dem primary as you would expect.

Quote

The 24-hour snapshot of Musk’s posts, which are largely representative of his average daily output, are a revealing look into how the world’s richest man spends a large part of his day, almost every day. Though Musk receives huge amounts of media coverage for his various legal battles and business ventures, it can be easy for people who are not constantly online to miss just how prolific his output is on X and how extreme the content is that he promotes there. He tweets so often that his own bot scanners have flagged his account in the past. He has replaced Donald Trump as the tweeter-in-chief.

If billionaires of the past like Richard Branson and Steve Jobs have projected images of yachting in the Caribbean or standing on stage brandishing their latest tech creation, a review of Musk’s tweets paints a contrasting picture: his default status is staring at a screen, posting. Much as Trump’s vindictive speeches must be heard in full to be believed, Musk’s whiplashing mix of aggrieved political trolling, memes and company hype must be read in sequence to understand the world’s most privileged tweeter.

His tweet numbers alone would make me not want him running a toll both, much less the top guy at all the companies he’s “running”.

Surprising article that came across my feed this morning:

https://eurasiantimes.com/china-can-detect-f-22-f-35-stealth-jets/amp/

Quote

In a recent experiment, a Chinese scientist and his team demonstrated that Beijing could successfully detect a stealth aircraft using Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites.

As part of this experiment, the group launched a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone off the coast of Guangdong. The drone was roughly the size of a bird and had a radar cross-section similar to a stealth fighter.

Despite its stealth characteristics, the target unexpectedly appeared on the screen even though the ground-based radar did not emit any radio waves that would have resulted in an echo. The scientists explained that this was possible because the drone was illuminated by electromagnetic radiation from a Starlink satellite passing over the Philippines.

This capability, the report said, has never been shown by any other nation.

If such an experiment is authenticated, China would likely gain an unprecedented combat advantage over its adversary and rival, the United States, which has a sizeable stock of stealth fighters, such as the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II, as well as stealth bombers.

The TLDR is that they allege that the Starlink constellation puts out enough background radio waves that it sufficiently illuminates stealth aircraft. It'll be interesting to see if the results are replicated and authentic, and if there's any impact on Starlink's business model if so
