Tyrese just had to score 3 points

Three fucking points from Tyrese we go to OT tonight. Against his former team.

I talked with my dad and brothers during the game and we all agreed that I think Texas was just too big for this kid.

He was consistently so awful in the biggest moments tonight against his former team. That tells me all I need to know about who he is as a player.

This season might be fucked because we bought into this guy as our starting PG.

I don't think y'all understand how good Carr was last season.

Personally, I watch Tyrese and feel like there's a problem with the coaching. Either that or he has an undisclosed injury. He's not the same player he used to be, that's for sure.

I might get shit on for this, but imo he was never that good. I watched him a fair bit at ISU and I never understood for a single minute why everyone thought he was such a good/can't miss prospect in the portal from Iowa State. He literally had one notable game that entire year, it just happened to be in the tourney against a mediocre SEC team, and he road that all the way to what I assume is a fat NIL deal with Texas. He got shut down by every decent defense he played against and it seems to still be the case.

it’s night and day. i mentioned it in a previous post, how i struggle to name another player who shows up as a freshman as a defensive force, as an aggressive, explosive player on offense, and who then just fades away into the mist for the rest of his career, like he’s not even a JAG. there’s got to be something behind the scenes that’s going on. it doesn’t add up.

the only other guy i can think of who regressed like this was james thomas, and he had serious issues with his feet and hips which caused him to physically deteriorate, and to become worse and worse as a player. there’s just got to be something going on behind the scenes.

that’s why. CBB fans put waaaaaay too much stock into tourney results. its the same reason why a coach who wins 25 games/yr will be shit on by his fan base if he doesn’t regularly go to the second or third weekend. CBB has become like the world cup: nobody cares what you did in qualifying (aka the cbb regular season); they only care what you do in the big dance (unrightfully so in CBB).

also je was an outstanding defender as a freshman.

how did this guy:

become what he is today? it’s not normal. something has to be going on to be causing this type of downturn in play.

That's literally just him hitting mostly wide open 3s in one game

The simple answer on how he went from that to today is he got hot in one fucking game and it was an outlier

wrong. he was also a big xii all-defense  member as a freshman plus a great athlete. he was an outstanding free safety style defender who used his athleticism and anticipation to wreak havoc on opposing offenses. he also used to dunk all over people and play like an uber aggressive athletic freak. he projected to be an elite defender and athlete in CBB who could score at all three levels. and now he’s almost useless. his hype was for real, and his downfall has been extremely surprising.

edit: i was going to add some of this to my response BF, but then morgantownhorn made his post so i decided to just put it all here. the hype for Hunter was warranted.

It's possible (likely?) that he just doesn't give a shit. He's getting paid big money and will end up with a good degree assuming he plays out his eligibility. Some guys are like that.

i would say ‘yes’ if he hadn’t been so aggressive and such a good defender as a freshman. that’s what’s so weird. guys who play like he did as a freshman basically never fall off. they might not grow as much as other guys, but they never fall off. a great defender with great effort and athleticism falling off like this? something is off.

I mean he wasn't really good last year when he wasn't the focal point and not getting the other teams good defenders on him.  It wasn't going to get better.

Now I will admit I couldn't believe it would be this bad.

we were excited to keep him because we were up shit creek without a paddle at point.

I disagree with the never falling off part. His freshman year is what got him paid, sure, even if he was over hyped (and he was, in my opinion). Wouldn't be the first time a dude got paid and immediately got lazy and/or complacent.

every guy i can think of (from any school) who was an uber aggressive, successful, defensively ready freshman only got better as his career went on. those guys only fall off if they get hurt.

It’s wild when you look at his numbers and realize his FG%, 3P%, assists, steals and PPG are all up from last year with similar minutes played.

You are right though, he wasn’t good last year. The staff also probably felt trapped when he declared but left open the option to return. That had just lost AJ Johnson, Holland and Arterio Morris. Could you have imagined this fanbase if Hunter also said peace out? Coaches probably felt they had to try to get him back from a perception standpoint despite the fact we may have been better off without him.

As Derka pointed out, his defensive falloff has been more perplexing than anything he has done offensively.

Kyler Edwards got remarkably worse in his 2nd year under Beard. He was a major contributor, great spot up shooter, and absolutely killer defender off the bench as a true freshman on a national championship contending team. He only rebounded as a player after Kelvin Sampson got ahold of him.

Rumor was Beard was extremely abusive towards him and he had stated his desire to transfer if Beard remained the coach.

Point is, there's always a reason. Money sometimes changes people. To pretend it doesn't is a little goofy. Maybe he just doesn't respond well to the type of coaching he's getting. Who knows.

Ding ding ding ding ding, give immature kids a bunch of money and youll be surprised what happens to some of them. It can be too much for them to handle.

Hunter seems somewhat mentally fragile. Hard to be sure, as that's by definition not physical, but he plays a "glass half empty" kind of game. When he misses a couple open shots or gets stuffed at the rim, as we saw the other day, he seems to crawl back into his shell. I'd hoped his coast-to-coast buzzer beater might get him going again, but so far no signs of that.

There really are times where he looks like an All-American.  He can get to the rim.  He can shoot (sometimes).  He can play great defense.  He can lead with confidence and intensity.

And other times where he brings nothing to the table except turnovers.

I really want to pull for him. He has so much potential.

It’s tough to see and figure out, especially when you’re pulling for the kid. To spew the typical cliques, “it is never as good or bad as you think. Isu time was the “not as good as you think stretch.” Had big flashy moments in big games and tourney as a unscouted youngerd. Answers is usually somewhere in the middle and a combination o factors. Coaching, by not carving out a clean plan for his role. He is not a consistent shooter, spot up or not. He does have the athleticism to play maniacal d, and d4ive. His role should be drive, get defense rotating without leverage and either score get fouled, or set up a + open setup shot for Asmas, or leveraged, mismatch + shot. Sucks cause this team does have some talent. Just need each player to know their role and attack it. If he could just commit to get that first drive step , to get the d rotation , then it opens erything for the other player. Hope I’m wrong but just see this season ending with frustration. Committing to driving can also help with Disu foul management.....anyways I’m to drunk to taste this pony.

He was solid that year (believe he was Big 12 FOTY), but his performance in the tournament was absolutely not indicative of his body of work.

The bottom line with Hunter is that he came from absolutely nothing.  Both parents died when he was young, and he was raised by his older brother.  He needed money, and that's why he came to Austin.  I'm sure he said all the right things about the staff and program, but by all accounts he was very happy at ISU (especially being 4-5 hours from home) prior to learning what kind of bag was out there.  He was projected as a fringe NBA guy at best, so this was his opportunity to make money playing basketball that he could use to stabilize his family and at least give him some options at a better life.

In my experience people just don't perform at their best when they're only doing something for money.  Maybe he had a good connection with Beard, but obviously he's not part of the equation any more either.  Regardless, he went to Texas for primarily financial reasons, and then the program shifted suddenly under his feet.  What he signed up for isn't what he's getting at this point.  I think a lot of people in his situation would find themselves adrift for lack of a better term.

Bingo.  Well written sir.  Hunter has plenty of ability to create advantages for his teammates.  He can get to the rim just about any time he wants, but it just doesn’t seem to be a very intentional part of the offense . . . it just disappears . . . much like committing to establish Disu on the block.

Yeah for sure I thought he was a good player, but the hype around him transferring was just perplexing. I definitely don't blame him for making the move he did. These kids deserve to get paid and I'm glad he did, he seems like a good kid.

And yeah, that's basically what I was talking about...it feels like to me he's playing for the money and probably doesn't have the same passion for basketball that maybe he did coming into college. It just is what it is.

No idea if this is the case with Tyrese or not, but there are a lot of guys who are great players in high school but are just not that into the sport who get sick of it mid-college and just go through the motions. I was friends with a guy in high school who played football at SMU just prior to the death penalty who was that way, and knew a couple of OLineman at UT who were the same. One of the latter was an all-American OT in high school who had quit the team and was working at the Posse by his junior year. Some guys just take awhile to realize that even though they’re good at something, they just don’t like it enough to put in the time it takes to stay good.

My hope is that Hunter works on his game and gets his head right in the offseason and has an awesome senior year here.  As hard as it is to see, he has improved in his efficiency over the years.  His FG% is up and he is taking fewer bad 3s.  His assists are up. steals are up.  He is getting to the line more.

The biggest glaring issue is that he is turning the ball over way more than last year (and they seem to come at the worst times).  And his free throw percentages are down.  That tell me that his head isn't in the right place.

image.thumb.png.fb08e0027f250282f261d2442e160d3f.png

We have seen players make a big final leap in their senior year (like Javan Felix or Kenton Paulino).  Hunter definitely has the tools.

As things stand today, I would be shocked if he is wearing a Texas uniform next year. These coaches won’t be doing their job well if they just cross their fingers and hope he figures it out.

We can’t waste our year with Tre Johnson hoping our PG figures it out. We need a sure thing.
