American Nightmare was released today. If you’re into true crime docs it’s the best one Netflix has come out with a while, absolutely insane story. And holy shit the police are evil.

Haven’t watched yet but did just listen to Criminal’s two part podcast on the case. Really good but infuriating.

As someone who spent my last 2 years in the Navy at Mare Island and living in Vallejo I am not surprised at all about how incompetent the police were. That town is such a fucking shithole. We always referred to it as "the armpit of the bay area".

My one interaction with the police there was bad. I called to report a crime, they said they would send someone over. They never did. I called again the next day and they said they were sorry but there was a large robbery/hostage situation at the safeway down the street so they couldn't make it over and they would try to be there soon. Called a few days later and they said they talked to the DA and they didn't feel the crime was worth doing anything about so sorry were not going to pursue this.

It closed as a Navy Base/Shipyard not long after I left in 1995. I did drop by on the way to Tahoe from SF a few years ago. Most of the buildings I was familiar with are gone. Somewhat bizarre to me that they built houses there, that place was an industrial wasteland. Was pretty funny seeing the bridge and other familiar places in the show.

Tacoma FD is on Netflix now, been binging all week, awesome show, definitely my sense of humor, already one of my all time favorites. Half of Broken Lizard. Had to look up the chick, name Hassie Harrison, total smoke show.

She married Ryan Bingham and got Hollywood skinny. Not a positive development in my opinion.

Peak Hassie was early Yellowstone.

I would never, ever live in housing community that was built on a former military base.  The amount of chemicals, ordnance and other shit in the ground is off the charts.

What was the crime?

Re: American Nightmare....

Also, it blows we away at how inept some PD's are.  You see it all the time on Dateline/20/20 type shows.

It's usually some idiot detective saying "we only care about the truth" when that's not the case at all.

I'm glad those folks sued the shit out of them and won.  Good for them.

It would be one thing for them to not believe the story and just keep quiet about it. But the fact that they heard the story, chose not to believe it, did zero investigation on any of the claims(they put his fucking phone on silent while the kidnapper made a call from a traceable number), and then went to the media and accused them of being liars, was absolutely one of the most insane, unethical things i could think of.

Here's the thing, Vallejo PD: If you have evidence that someone lied to you about a case, you fucking charge them with a crime and present your evidence. For them to just go on TV, having done no investigation, and accuse these people of lying is just....despicable. If they were lying and you knew it you'd charge them with a crime. You wouldn't have a poo-flinging press conference. That was fucking embarassing.

Juxtaposed next to the actual PD that found the guy....that lady and her boss are natural born po-lice. They knew some shit was up and got to the bottom of it. Loved her.

I'm on board with Cheer too. It's amusing and educational, some of the stories and the kid's backgrounds are fascinating. What those kids have to go through is pretty shocking to someone like me who knows nothing about the sport. The coach is a fucking badass. As Pato mentioned, she's a Longhorn and her plan was to go into finance, but she ended up married with kids in Navarro instead.

Whoops.

Quote

The son of Monica Aldama, the star of the Netflix show ‘Cheer’, has been arrested and charged with possession of child pornography.

Austin Aldama, 27, was arrested by the Navarro County Sheriff's Office last week and charged with multiple counts of possession with intent to promote child pornography.

Aldama, who lives in Dallas, posted bond last Thursday, on the day of his arrest, according to court documents.

‘Cheer’ focuses on the Navarro College cheerleading team, where Monica Aldama is the coach.

She then appeared on the 29th season of Dancing with the Stars.

This is not the first time the subjects of the Netflix show has been connected to child pornography.

In 2022, Jerry Harris, a member of the Navarro College cheerleading squad who appeared on the show, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for coercing teen boys to send him sexually explicit photos and soliciting sex from minors.

She recently stepped down from her Navarro post over some sexual abuse cover-up claims.

That son has been around relatively young-looking girls his whole life.

Re American nightmare, the ex girlfriend being the supposed target of the kidnapping wasn't really explored, seems that would be a key element of figuring out what happened. And the FBI agent that dated her seems pretty coincidental too.

And a 15k ransom?  I mean, I'm no surly 1%er but seems like a low amount to ask for if you want a kidnapping to seem real.

The only thing I came away from that knowing for sure is that the local cops are corrupt idiots.

To me, it was pretty clear that Muller is a serious fucking nutbag and the kidnapping/ransom part was an excuse to live out some bizarre sex/power fantasy in his head.

Did he have accomplices or making that shit up?

I can see why the cops were skeptical. The story is crazy, the 911 call had no urgency to it. The security footage of the girl walking home was odd, looked like she was walking into her house after a trip to the grocery store, not scared for her life. That being said, cops were assholes for going public and shitting all over then on national TV. Looks like they got caught up in Gone Girl, not the victims.

Right up until the end I was waiting for a twist that never came.

It’s almost like there’s no real way to know how people will react to traumatic situations, and therefore the cops should’ve investigated the claims anyway.

The detail about the wetsuits actually was kind of a giveaway to me. It’s hard to imagine someone making up a story would include a weird/nonsensical detail like that.

I was wondering that. She had two bags like she was coming back from vacation.
Also didn’t he say they left in his car? Did they find his Camry and where? What happened to the webcam they said he placed in their bedroom?

plus the text conversation with the kidnapper after he woke up.

That shitty, corrupt police dept. and Colonel Mustard just immediately decided he had killed her and dumped her body, then that it was all a hoax when she showed up. Zero actual police work.

Watching this "Trust" game show. It's kind of like the Survive The Raft show that Nate Boyer hosted except these fucking lunatics are on another level.

You got your resident weirdo cat lady, angry black chick, texas cowboy, dumb broad who thinks her shit doesnt stink X2.

If you like cooking shows, Dinner Time Live with David Chang. It’s live on Tuesdays. Caught the first one today.

He had the dude from Beef and Rashida Jones. It’s live and like someone’s cooking for you at the chefs bar. He fucks up and makes mistakes. This one was about three dishes from one chicken. He is far more personable than usual.

Best dish. He melted a tub of vanilla haagen dazs to make a fast crème anglais. Put Krispy Kreme donuts in a skillet to heat em up. Sauce in bowl. Hot donut. Some vanilla ice cream.

He made some great dishes. Told some stories. We liked it.

Good call on that. They never ever touched on the Camry, webcam, red tape in his room, or his texts... I'll chalk that up to them wanting to keep this doc to 3 eps so they had to cut shit out. But goddamn.... this just tells us what we already know. You take all the sociopaths in the world - then take the dumbest 10% of them - and you get cops.

Also re: American Nightmare.. .

All those people who sent them nasty messages and death threats or whatever on facebook. Why not put their names on blast on the documentary? "oh you wanna sue me for putting your name on there? Bring it the fuck on asshole"

Well did you see the movie Gone Girl?? I mean it was exactly the same.

They were crazy and should have been sued for more than than the couple got. Just an unreal story. If that one lady cop hadn't broken it, they'd probably have done time.

The Hill was a good story, but done in that cheap Hallmark sappish kind of way.   But the story was good enough to warrant sitting through the poor production.

A story about a kid from Texas who fights off a lot of disabilities to make it to the Majors.  Just don't expect Brenham to look like Brenham.

Spoiler

Movie said he made it to play for the Expos for 4 years.  Maybe just their farm team, but it sure seemed like they meant the big league.  Either way, like you said, a great story.
