Jamie pleads guilty because he finally accepts what he did or he realizes he can't beat the case. DI Bascombe realizes he needs to be more in tune with his son and what's going on in his life so he makes the effort to go spend time with him. The case was pretty cut and dry with the tape so there wasn't much to do but charge Jamie. Episode 3 really stuck with me because the psychologist knew there was nothing that could be done to help Jamie and that seems like one of the most depressing jobs in the world especially when it clicked that Jamie has angry breaks with reality and then returns to being sorry for what just happened. My only nitpick would be they never featured the victim's family other than DS Frank saying no one will remember Katie and only will remember what Jamie did. Jade was also a very tragic ending as you see her being all alone like she said would happen now that Katie is dead. They did a great job of making you think she deserved punishment to instantly making you sympathise with how f'ed up her life is.

Great performance by Stephen Graham who I kept wondering where I had seen him before. He was Tommy in Snatch.

Porn star?

Yeah, I just binged watched all of Adolescence. Brutal but excellent. And honestly, a nice little kick in the ass as a father of a young son growing up in this technology hellscape.

Adolescence was excellent, definitely a sad watch. The premise was iffy, no kid is going to stab a girl because he watches Andrew Tate and the weak points of the show are when it tried to shove that criticism in. In fairness the show doesn’t say that was the actual reason for the crime, he was just a kid with anger issues that was upset he got disrespected. The whole manosphere/incel/red pill online stuff had nothing to do with it and it was weird the show focused on that at times. In episode 3 he even says he saw some videos but didn’t like them.

I have essentially stopped reading these "recommendations" threads because of posts like the one above. If you really feel the need to talk about what happens in the show, it's not that hard to put it on spoiler tags.

"I recommend 'Whatever' on Netflix/Prime/Apple. It's really good, and the best part is the very end with the shocking twist that the mom did it all along. Anyway, great show and y'all should watch it."

It was a complete gut punch. But the kid really came off as a little psycho. I'm not sure he wouldn't have turned out violent either way. He really got off on trying to intimidate that therapist and control that situation and had uncontrollable anger when he couldn't.

Enjoyed the first two episodes of The Residence.  Limited series whodonit with a pretty good cast.  Uzo Aduba plays the part well and has some really funny lines.

There is no plot twist or surprises in the show. It’s upfront all the way from the onset.

I genuinely thought the rest of the post was going to criticize the half baked Helobious 'analysis' which would have been equally valid criticism.

Anyone else watching Weak Hero Class 1 ? (Korean w/English subtitles for us). The bully(ies) picking on the weak trope, but for a quasi 'teen' show, not a bad watch thus far for some of the fight scenes, although:

criticism behind spoiler

Spoiler

The scene where the introvert victim finally loses it and beats the lead bully in the face with a textbook resulted in a broken nose for the bully, but make-up artist did not spray the young man's face with enough bruising. No way you're getting hit that much in the thin skin of the face and not be purple for the next week. I think it was cause he was a bit of a 'pretty' face and they didn't want to spoil it. Brat sure had it coming though.

so, honestly, how do you film a show in one take like this? i can’t wrap my head around it.

There’s a making-of video in the extras on Netflix

wow. the redneck family are just living breathing emblems of dunning-kruger. i found them fascinating.
edited to add: the way that they “interacted” with “mr.fenn”, eg speaking directly to him when filming themselves, and feeling like “mr.fenn” cared about them and wanted good for them, was just so eerily similar to so many maga people and donald trump. this personal relationship that they’ve created in their heads and hearts- it’s just wild.
Damn those dudes were some regards lmao

Dammit, I have to agree a bit here.

But, I had seen some "reviews" that mentioned Parliament was going to have some special sessions or some such about adolescent social media use.  Therefore, I was expecting more focus or reveal on that aspect of it, while it actually remained pretty implicit, and the "cause" of the crime remained unclear, probably purposely.

That I kept waiting for it and it never came distracted me from the more general excellence of the show.

Bad Influence was worth the watch, even if somewhat predictably infuriating.

No good guys, just greedy corporations, greedy parents and damaged kids.

Agree.

Spoilered commentary:

Spoiler

The mother, Tiffany? She was, what's the word? Pathological? 70 cats, are you kidding me? If those parents wanted to get their kids out of there, hell just call the local animal control officers cause that was nuts. Swear there must be something in the water/clay in Georgia (no CR) cause that was one crazy manipulative woman.

@Goredho--your comment about infuriating was so spot on. I can see parents getting sucked into this at first, but even for Corinne, the young dancer, that exited fairly early on, the experience was traumatic and it showed. I don't believe the doc filmers were encouraging the one-on-one interviews to be exaggerated and it was painful to watch these teens struggle with their memories and experiences. The children (when first starting out) do/did not seem (to me) to be motivated by money, just personality--it's like a video version of kids putting on a play in the living room in dress up clothes. Saturday afternoon rainy day play, you know? (sorry if that sounds old fashioned, but we did things like that with our kids because sometimes old fashioned isn't all bad). While the money wasn't the only thing that tainted it as the timeline progressed, it was obvious that it afforded "things" that were bright and shiny and new to many of the young people and their parents and the hook (we will totally wreck your world through social media if you turn away from this) was just devastating and despicable. Ugh.

The least surprising thing was Tiffany having a pageant background with Piper that eventually ended in this influencer/video business. The pageant circuit was where she cut her teeth on how to manipulate and deceive others and sexualize young people.

Besides Piper being stuck with her mom, one of the other outcomes was that the young man from Austin, Jentzen, is still estranged from his mom. Don't know if there is more back story to that in its own right. His parents ended up divorced, as the mother stated.

Admired the young lady who was working at the industry from a legal perspective.

Pretty much agree with everything you wrote.

Spoiler

If you think about social media and its ability to democratize fame to where anyone has the ability to become a celebrity, it’s really no surprise that it also has the ability to democratize the exploitation of those who desire celebrity and fame.  Either for themselves or their kids.

News flash, kids who grow up in front of a camera struggle moving into adulthood.  And I can imagine social media fame presents some unique challenges for a kid where the boundaries of work/life, fantasy/reality are especially blurry.  Your childhood home is the set and the camera is always rolling.

So true and...

Spoiler

Your quote about the growing up in front of a camera and boundaries: so on point and what really got to me is your comment about the home being the set with the camera always rolling and how important privacy is to children as they move through adolescence and they had pretty much zero. Not even talking about the weird picking the lock stuff, but just basic 'time to oneself' that teens need so they can figure shit out. Teen actors have at least a modicum of protection through various state laws (although many states have none at all), but this unregulated video monetization stripped away their right to say, I need some space. I noticed even the mother couldn't always coerce Piper to perform on occasion and I speculate those must have been some really dark days given how others commented on mom's temper. Our teenage years can be difficult but these children have such shit-astic role models for any and all types of relationships in the future. I don't recall if the doc mentioned counseling, but these children ought to be receiving it.

Welp, I've tried to learn from mistakes, either my own or others. Learning nuance, i.e. when and how to apply what one has learned, comes afterward on that journey.

Or one can plow blindly and recklessly ahead.

Finally watched Carry-On.  It might have set the record for the most plot holes in one movie.  What a stupid, ridiculous mess.

I recommend hitting yourself in the head with a hammer and passing out for two hours instead.

i’m on episode three of Bad Influence: The Dark Side Of Kidfluencing

Spoiler

this tiffany cunt needs to spend her life behind bars. i will never ever ever be able to understand how a mother can do these types of things to her child. not to mention other people’s children.

also, adults who put their children in pageants/try to make them child stars should be put on a watchlist and visited by cps, often.

edit: this is somehow getting drastically worse by the second, after what i’ve already posted. my god.
