Blake Munroe said in the OTF thread that he fully expects him to make it on campus.

Have a very hard time believing that. Why does he think that?

It’s always easier to assume no baseball guys make it to campus until they do. Lol

Yeah, if he's still the top high school pitching prospect a year from now he isn't turning down $5 million (at least).

MLB Organizations have figured out that drafting high school pitchers is a bad investment and the potential for success is low. That's why only two high school pitchers were taken in the first round this year, and the first not until 24th overall.

Increasingly, the data also suggests that for elite pitching prospects, they're better off going to college than signing with a pro team. They're more likely to develop and have a long pro career, with higher potential earnings.

All true.  But doesn't alter the fact that if he is the top-rated HS pitcher he will go in the first round and almost certainly sign.

Top rated by the services doesn't necessarily make him the top HS pitcher on MLB draft boards.

I agree that it's highly unlikely that he comes to Texas, but it's not a 100% certainty.

With the velocity he has at his age, he's likely to be throwing over 95 by his senior year.  If he makes it to campus, it will be amazing.  As Michael Scott once said, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

Anyone know how much guys make who go in the first rd? I've heard it's less than $600,000. That doesn't seem like much for a 1rd guy. Going to college you could probably make more if you're good enough.

They make way fucking more than $600k

Serious question- what do they make? I'm very curious.

Teams get a bonus pool depending on where they draft and can allocate money accordingly. Each pick in the first 10 rounds has a determined slot value and that makes up the bonus pool. Here's last year's 1st overall was slotted at over 10M 30th just under 3M

The slot values are pre-determined, slots 1-30. The rangers had the lowest slot value because they had the lowest first round pick. That’s how it works.

they had the lowest first round pick, because they won the World Series. You left off the best part.

(and seriously, after the dumb question was asked and answered and then asked again, couldn't somebody have just told this idiot to google "How much do mlb draft picks make?")

So this was the 🤫 from Blake that was on the football recruiting thread.

Chances he makes it to campus?

Of all the highly ranked draftable dudes we have recruited, this dude has the highest chance of making it to campus

I know you're intimately involved in NIL efforts, so I don't want you to take this as me challenging your claim above, but why?

  • Is Trey just a huge Texas fan?
  • Is there some misalignment in his prospect ranking vs. what MLB scouts think?
  • Is it simply the shift in value of high school pitching prospects (i.e., the data shows the development curve isn't worth the investment nowadays in most cases)?
  • Trey wants to supplement his potential (highly variable depending on development outcome) future professional earnings with NIL now?
  • Trey wants to develop under Weiner and be a surefire high pick later on?
  • Some combo of the above?

This is the main reason. I dont know shit about fuck with baseball recruiting but the response I got was "We dont know why he is ranked that high but cannot wait to have him on campus". Anything can happen of course still

His fastball said 90-94 which is bigger than normal range for that.  I wonder if he sits around 90 most of the time?  That would help explain why he's not as much of a draft risk.  A 90mph fastball and a nasty curve will do very well in college though.

Or a nasty change. This was basically a description of Lucas Gordon. I'd take another SP like that, for sure.

Looks like Schloss is taking the same approach as he did at aggy.

The only way you can get top recruits like Grahovic and Laviolette to campus is to take your shot. We won't get several of these to campus but if you just hit on a couple it's still a major win.

I would guess that this stream of commitments to Texas is helpful to the perception of the Longhorns whether the best of these guys make it to campus or not. We're the place where the best players are committing. If a spot opens up due to the draft, there may be room for you!
