Texas Primaries

Allred “did I mention I played in the NFL?” is basically a sacrificial lamb.  Surely there’s local races where the money might be spent to more advantage.

That's really what it seems like. I just don't see him punching Cruz in the nose in the campaign. Cruz will say anything and everything.

I think Gutierrez is much more of what was needed.

I’d prefer Roland too but his concession speech was awesome. The time for petty slights is over with the primary down, now let’s go kick some GOP ass in November

Also he said “son of a bitch” about 6 times about Cruz and Trump

Yeah my best friend is trying to get out of Texas too and he’s O&G. I’d love to point him to something different he can look into it

Don't ask @Neonmoon for advice, he managed to pick something even worse than O&G....

Finance (Lending)

I would NOT advise the move to this field right now. Lol

LCHorn is making too much money right now. He can confirm

Serious question... why?

I can't find myself to donate to big national races. Those people will never ever have an issue with money for their campaign. Allred I could see myself doing it for things like state house races and I've done it for specific issued-focused groups.

Allred's at a pretty significant cash disadvantage relative to Cruz and a donation now goes further than it will months from now. In general I agree with your line of thinking but Texas is a big, expensive market and it costs a lot of money to run a competitive campaign here. I'm under no illusion he will win but I want him to be competitive. Electoral politics isn't football - there are moral victories. If the GOP - which is cash strapped as fuck, by the way -  has to expend resources in TX it cannot use them elsewhere. Also, as I said, because fuck Ted Cruz.

I won't be donating to the Biden campaign because I think you're right nationally and he has a huge cash advantage over Trump already.

Because maybe they can afford donating to more than one candidate?

As far as key races, I have state rep (Ginsberg), state senate (Nathan Johnson) US Rep (Sam Eppler) and US Senate (Allred).

Johnson has it in the bag - the rest have little to no chance, but still worth throwing them some $$ to at least provide some hope for next time around.

You would garner more benefit by putting the money in a pile in your driveway and setting it on fire.

Kyle Rittenhouse... now there's a guy who knows what it means to be a Texan and what Texas is all about. Great endorsement.

God the carpet baggers in our politics is sickening.

  • 2 months later...

Phelan stopped by my stepbrother’s company the other day to shake hands with all the warehouse folks.

He said every districtwide full-color mailer costs $20k, and in the last two weeks, I’ve received no fewer than 40, or $600k in two weeks. That's right, most of my mail is Dade and Covey hitpeices. And Trump sent Covey a bill for $600k for using his endorsement.

District 21 is a bloodbath. The hope is that Orange and Jasper sit home as there is no sherriff’s race on the run off ballot, and that Jefferson county shows up; 15k registered Republicans didn't cast ballots in the primary.

And that democrats vote for Phelan, too.

  • 2 weeks later...

I voted early on Friday, and maybe my ballot was flagged as a provisional or required further scrutiny because I changed addresses within district 21 several weeks ago. Today is the runoff.

I've received 3 phone calls today from Phelan’s uncle, my stepbrother, and my wife’s stepsister with “hey the rolls show you haven't voted yet, what gives?”

That's crazy to me.

My wife asked me earlier who the Democratic candidate will be in November’s general. I just laughed and asked her what candidate in their right mind would dive into this shitshow.

Man.  I have such a bad feeling about tonight.  Not that we haven't had numerous tipping points before, but I think that tonight is the night that seals the Paxton-wing complete control of our state.

Literally the worst state official of our lifetime, and he is going to be the most powerful man in this state with nobody to even slow him down.

Mixed bag so far

He lost to Katrina Pierson. Yeah her.

Hold off on the sunshine pumping

So we have a couple of kinda not too crazy reps for the US House, one replacing Granger and some seriously deranged fuckers going to the TX House

I appreciate you posting the results. Since I know very little about the candidates in the various run-offs, it'd be helpful to see a list of those supported by Phelan versus those supported by Abbott/Paxton. Do you happen to know if one is available, or should I just assume any incumbent is somewhat moderate, as this post implies? Also, it'd be especially helpful to know when there's no incumbent.

I'm looking at this comprehensive list of all returns and don't know what to make of any of it:

Okay, I might've found a partial answer to my question. I'd assumed that Abbott and Paxton were on the same side, but it doesn't appear so in many races. It looks like Paxton people are doing better than Abbott people in the run-offs.

Dark mode readers are going to have to switch to standard viewing because I'm not about to try to recreate this table, and the formatting didn't carry over.

Bold is winning.

Here's what I've found from before the run-offs:

Did you see this one?

https://www.texastribune.org/2024/05/28/texas-election-primary-runoff/

Along with VanDeaver, three other anti-voucher Republicans are on Tuesday’s ballot: state Reps. DeWayne Burns of Cleburne, Justin Holland of Rockwall and John Kuempel of Seguin.

Burns faces Helen Kerwin, a former Glen Rose mayor and Somervell County commissioner, who finished with 49% to Burns’ 41% in the first round.

Holland is up against Katrina Pierson, the former tea party leader and Trump spokesperson. He received 39% in March, finishing a few hundred votes behind Pierson.

Kuempel’s runoff opponent is former state representative Alan Schoolcraft, who won 48% to Kuempel’s 45% in the first round.

Colin suffers from a condition that infects most black male politicians. He’s afraid to turn off white voters who might consider voting for him by coming across as the scary, angry, arrogant even, black man. Trust me. It’s a real fear and not without credence.

The ONLY silver lining for me, personally, is my daughter is going to college in Upstate NY and will probably never come back to Texas.
