AMC promo pic from 2007 before Mad Men debuted in July 2007 and Breaking Bad debuted in January 2008.  little did either one know their lives (and TV) would change forever when they took this.

Weird that you bumped this thread. Some of you might remember that Mrs. JW was Anna Gunn's stand in and body double for all of season 4 and for the last episode at the end of season 6/5b.

Anyway, we had a bit of a reunion on Thursday last week. The guy who was Brian Cranston's stand in for seasons 2 & 3 (maybe season 1, we're not sure), and the script supervisor for the whole series and for BCS were here for dinner and to hang out.

So what does a stand in do, or why are they there?  Is a body double different ? Are these like stuntmen?

Never seen this so it may be new to you.

Anthony Hopkins letter to Cranston.

Apparently written in 2013.

The stand ins help the director of photography set up each scene for camera angles and lighting so the actor doesn’t have to do that. It helps keep the actor’s makeup and what not fresh among other things (I guess). Body double does the scene when the actor’s face isn’t necessary for the shot. The scene from above at the four corners is Mrs Jw. The coin flip is her hand doing it.

Shots take a long time to set up. Lots of assistant directors running around with light meters to check the lighting levels. They need to work out the blocking for actors, and how the shot is going to look and be lit, so they need people with the same height and build as the actors to stand in and to do all the set up.

That's interesting.  So I suspect Anna Gunn didn't even go to Four Corners - just close shots of her face that could have been done anywhere.

They wanted it to land in Colorado and it took 10 - 12 takes. She thinks. It's been a while. She remembers that it was very frustrating. Each take took a bunch of time to reset everything. Plus 50 or so people (crew) standing around watching so added pressure for a perfectly vertical coin flip with the correct height.
