AT&T Wireless down

Recommended Posts

AT&T’s network went down for many of its customers across the United States Thursday morning, leaving customers unable to place calls, text or access the internet.

Although Verizon and T-Mobile customers reported some network outages, too, they appeared far less widespread. T-Mobile and Verizon said their networks were unaffected by AT&T’s service outage and customers reporting outages may have been unable to reach customers who use AT&T.

AT&T acknowledged that it has a widespread outage but did not provide a reason for the system failure.

Although AT&T provided no official reason for the outage, the issue appears to be related to how cellular services hand off calls from one network to the next, a process known as peering, according to an industry source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

There’s no indication that Thursday’s outage was the result of a cyberattack or other malicious activity, the industry source said.

Company iPhone is ATT and it has LTE at the moment. It's an old beater 8, but I do have some connectivity. T-Mobile on my own phone is rocking 5G. I saw on CNBC that the Verizon and T-Mobile users might have been trying to reach ATT users and that's why they thought it was out. T-Mobile says they are fine.

I've been reading some scuttlebut that the outage is related to patching gone awry on some backbone infrastructure, like bad security patches on a Cisco router kinda deal

Have you unplugged the router and plugged it back in?

Damn Chinese weather balloons.

I honestly did not know about the outage until just now.  And I noticed driving my youngest to pre-school, the same route we do 4 days a week...way more people than usual looking down at their phones while waiting to turn, inching along 2244, etc.  It was way more than usual and it stood out to me.  I'm guessing it was people trying to figure out what the fuck was going on with their phones.  And of course the best place to do that is a busy 5-lane road that has probably a combined 10 preschools and elementary schools on it, chock full of kids.  I don't know how you find out, but I  bet dollars to donuts that today and tomorrow have the highest accident rates around the country than any other 48 hour period in 2024.  I know I always handle my IT issues in the left-hand turn lane.  And my IT expert's name?  You guessed it...

I have no idea if this was the issue causing it, but Mopac southbound was a fucking parking lot this morning.  With no discernible cause (no wreck or stalled car anywhere that I could see).  And of course, I usually count on my phone's traffic mapping when I get in my car to tell me if traffic is a problem or not ("24 minutes to work, traffic is moderate").  But of course today....no such update, because it does that check once I'm far enough from the house that wifi isn't available.

There are whispers and shadows of the apocalypse out there, folks.  Backed up cars.  Communication outages.  The alien battle craft will be plunging to earth any second now.....

From the story I heard from a dude with a table and some pamphlets outside a gun show around 1989, they're in tunnels under Detroit, operating under the guise of the UN, just awaiting orders to come to the surface and conquer the US.  The key to which is, of course, controlling the vital crossroads that is Detroit.

So we're an AT&T family. 4 iPhones. 3 of the 4 don't have service. The youngest's phone has service. So I guess she has a phone that can catch the towers that are working? At least our Spectrum Cable is working so there's WiFi. It will be interesting if the older one's school has Wifi. A lot of the coursework is now online so not having service would mean they go back to the stone age with paper and actual instruction on a blackboard.

I read it may be a SIM card database that went down. That’s why some work and some don’t.

Interesting.  GOLL had to get a new iphone literally yesterday.  His phone is the only one in our office that is working -- he has full signal, no problems.

Well our second Civil War is certainly off to a fucking goofy-ass start.

Our district is now reporting that some instruction modules using their tablets are not working so Thursday homework folders will be altered.

So here's what my daughter's delayed math facts assignment means for those of you resorting to Cannibalism in Ohio to avoid the Minnesota volcanic emergency services delay

Might be a LTE vs 5G thing.  Few coworkers here have older iPhones that are LTE only.  Those that have newer 5G capable phones are dead.

Meanwhile, in the admin meeting I’m currently in I’m slogging through. I’m posting this from my iPad.

Also, ATT internet is fine.  Wife is working from home today; we have ATT fiber and she’s not having issues.
