I get extending him after Year 4, but why now? Khan seems bright. An engineer, self made billionaire. Does he think they’re close?

My hunch is that the Jags think Lawrence is good enough to keep them in playoff contention, and maybe they get hot and run into a championship eventually. Cousins 2.0. The alternative is a rebuild. Not very appealing for a team that plays a lot of games in London.

Because if you do it next year you can add another $30MM to the total even if he doesn’t get any better or appreciably worse….

He'll be unemployed shortly.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Lonnie Phelps was charged with drunken driving Wednesday night after police said he crashed his SUV into a Florida restaurant.

Phelps also faces a charge for damaging property following the incident at the Red Shoe Island Bistro in Key West.

Phelps, 23, was taken into custody after refusing to cooperate with officers, according to a Monroe County Sheriff's Office report obtained by Cleveland.com.

Photographs reportedly from the scene were posted online by TMZ Sports and showed a vehicle wedged into the side of the restaurant. Reports estimated the damages at $300,000.

Phelps signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent in May 2023, and he spent last season on their practice squad. Cleveland signed him to a reserve/future contract in January.

Phelps played college football at Miami (Ohio) from 2019 to '21 and at Kansas in 2022. He recorded 23 sacks and 29.5 tackles for loss in 41 games.

I hate all of our free agency, especially Baker Maytard. What are we even doing? We can't go grab a QB worth a shit?a bunch of fucking nobodies in the draft outside of Chris Braswell, a RB who won't pan out, and another WR (albeit he was good for UW). But fuck, how about we draft an actual QB for Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. We could have gotten Jaylen Wright, but instead we settled for Bucky Irving.

Well done, Jason Licht.

Dumbass.

Right now I would take Ryan Fitzpatrick. I fucking loathe Mayfield. And his contract was once again a dumbass move. Billionaires are some of the dumbest human beings on the planet in the NFL

Gotta give him credit for plugging away, playing ball and not going all Johnny Football. He seems to get it, as far as working, learning and earning his continued time the league.

David Shaw takes NFL front office job

ZACH BARNETT        JUN 20, 2024

Former Stanford head coach David Shaw has taken a role in the Denver Broncos front office, according to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver.

Shaw will be a senior personnel executive for the Broncos.

Shaw spent the 2023 season out of the game following the end of his 12-year run as Stanford's head coach. Taking over for Jim Harbaugh, Shaw initially improved upon his predecessor's breakthrough success on The Farm: five 10-win campaigns in his first six seasons, three Rose Bowl appearances (two wins), three Pac-12 championships, three AP top-10 finishes, and a No. 3 finish in 2015.

However, Stanford endured losing seasons in three of Shaw's last four seasons.

Shaw interviewed for the Broncos head coaching job that ultimately went to Sean Payton in 2023. Denver went 8-9 in Payton's first season, and overall the club has endured seven consecutive losing seasons under four different head coaches.

Denver ownership all has ties to Stanford -- team owner/CEO Greg Penner has an MBA degree from the school, minority owner Carrie Walton Penner owns a Master's degree, and minority owner Condoleezza Rice taught at the institution.

Shaw coached nine seasons in the NFL before joining Harbaugh's staff at the University of San Diego in 2006. He joined the league as a quality control for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997 (where Sean Payton was the QBs coach), then joined the Raiders, eventually becoming quarterbacks coach. Shaw then coached quarterbacks and wide receivers for the Baltimore Ravens from 2002-05.

Out of control.

The solution is to make QB play easier and safer.

You have to somehow reduce the magnitude/impact of the position.

Defensive line false starts.
Eliminate intentional grounding (if the ball crosses the line of Scrimmage - all good) etc etc. are some options they could use to address the issue.

I’d rather have QBs take up 70% of every team’s cap than make the rules any more QB friendly. How about leave all the rules the same (especially intentional grounding) and eliminate the “can’t chuck more than 5 yards down the field” rule?

That's the opposite of what they should do. Make things easier for DBs and watch the game shift back towards defense and the run game.

Since they first started making rules to make passing the football easier QB stats and salaries have skyrocketed. You cannot compete or win in the current 7 on y climate unless you have an elite QB

Except the problem with the Pro Bowl is that players don't want to get hurt. A mid-season Pro Bowl would be a problem for both the players and their teams. An injury could screw up the season. So, no one will want to play in the game.

Burrow’s pro bowl idea is silly. You’re correct a mid season game would be shunned by players.

Additionally the networks would never agree to an off week and in fact it’s stupid for the league. The value of an 18 game schedule with 2 byes is that it gives the league a 20 week season so it drives significant revenue increase, half of which goes to the players.

Didn't he get in trouble with reckless driving just last year?

Yes.  This moron was clocked doing 140 mph last year and pled to a misdemeanor speeding charge.  Now he gets charged with DUI after being found asleep at the wheel just days after a rookie teammate died in an incident that apparently involved another driver under the influence of alcohol.  Apparently, this dumbass just doesn't learn from his own mistakes or those of others (like Henry Ruggs).

This Vikings fan thinks Minnesota drafted a fucking moron who doesn't give a shit about his actions placing others at risk.

$55 million a year for Love. Lol. At some point the position players will force a change during collective bargaining. Not sure what can realistically be done.

It’s not actually $55 per year.

  • 2024: $20.7 million
  • 2025: $29.7 million
  • 2026: $36.1 million
  • 2027: $42.4 million
  • 2028: $74.2 million

The Packers will restructure or extend before 2028

Those are his cap hit numbers . It’s pretty complex and is structured a lot like Daks contract as it anticipates a great career and a third contract to fix this one. If he hits it’s fine but if you want to make a change it’s disastrous especially if as anticipated they add three void years like the Cowboys did to smooth out that huge hit at the end.

Love got a $75mil signing bonus all of which will be paid by December 4. It’s a record.

https://www.spotrac.com/news/_/id/2413/breaking-down-jordan-loves-220m-extension

One way to fix the issue with these contracts is to do away with void years on contracts. They game the system and screw the non super elite players but team and player benefit. A contract should be binding to team and player for the term. Cowboys have kicked the can with Dak and given him future salary upfront as bonus, and then extended the contract to Void Years to smooth it out. Those years are meaningless as the player becomes a FA still at the end of the original contract. So Dak has a huge number ($55m) at the end of this contract as they anticipated a new contract, and three void years that accelerate to 2025 of dead cap ($40m) if he leaves. They’re fucked.

Here’s Tua’s contract. It is far better for the Dolphins as the numbers don’t leave them horribly exposed if he gets his brain scrambled down the road. Tua is still getting a shitton of money. I believe this is the type contract Cowboys want with Dak if they really want to sign him.

https://www.spotrac.com/news/_/id/2414/breaking-down-tua-tagovailoas-2124m-extension

One way to fix would be put into players hands. Be socialists like the owners. TV rev divided into 32 shares. What would the players do?

$255mil x 32 is $8.1 billion. 1696 players split would be $4.7 mill each. (Yes you have more shares for practice squad, injuries, etc) Most don’t make close to that. Would they do that? Obviously they’d have a rookie cap and veteran tiers but..,

I know they are his cap numbers and that is the most important figure for the Packers and their roster.  From the Packers beat writers, I believe it’s just one void year. Who cares how much money actually goes from the Packers account to Loves account? The cap is all that matters with how much they can allocate to the rest of the roster.

Texzilla hates to see players get paid. He’s a simp for the owners. He spent all last offseason rejoicing at the idea that Lamar Jackson wasn’t going to get paid and claiming Lamar had made a huge mistake by not hiring an agent, only for Lamar to sign a record-setting deal.

The players collectively should get paid as much as they can negotiate for. Many people don’t like to see one player grab 25% of a salary cap, both because of inequity to the other 98% of players but also colossal risk to teams (and more importantly their fans) if the one dude taking up 25% of the cap either gets hurt or starts to sunk and your franchise is fucked. Wanting to create an individual max (for QBs) doesn’t mean “don’t want to see players get paid,” it means the salary cap is spread around to the other players. Owners spend the same.

Except this is a 5 year deal with 140 guaranteed and the money he will actually see from this deal is only about 10% of the cap. His deal will be re-structured way before he ever sees that last year and probably the last two years, which is why the OP was asking Texzilla why he cares so much about the signing bonus and what Love actually got paid versus the cap impact.

4/220 is just agent spin on this contract. Only $140 is actually guaranteed, which is what really matters.  Realistically, this is a 3/86 or 4/128 deal, which will average out to about 10% of the cap over the life of the deal. If Love proves to be great, then his next deal will be massive, but this one isn’t actually that crazy. If Love is bad, then the team will have to restructure and push the cap hit out, but they’ll be screwed no matter what if he sucks and there’s no avoiding paying your QB.

Love also has less guaranteed money than Tua, which means Texzilla’s bullshit comparing the Love and Tua deals is also completely wrong. Tua will be hitting the Dolphin’s cap for $60 mil in years 2 and 3 of his deal. That’s absolutely crippling for a team and why the Dolphins had to cut/let go so many of their other stars, yet Texzilla claims that deal is better.  Love’s deal is way better for his team than Tua’s, because the Packers can be competitive for the next 3-4 years with the QB only taking up about 10% of their cap.

The players get paid collectively all the same by each team thru the cap; the only difference is how it’s divvied out. Were I a GM I would probably divy it up differently than you. I don’t think every QB up for a contract deserves more money than the last simply for the timing of their contract. I don’t like FO stupidity. I don’t blame a player for where they are drafted or accepting money that is negotiated. I think in most cases teams paying outrageous percentages of cap to QBs will regret it simply because they can’t build a truly sustainable football team with adequate depth to get thru a season. I think the Ravens will regret that contract as will the chargers and browns and the Cowboys are and will if they Coro ate Dak. Most can’t put together an o line with 5 decent starters much less the backups that will be needed during a long season.
