Who is winning the great $9.95 Longhorn streaming wars?

I love how at the OTF site, olds will just start a new thread to state some inspirational bullshit (check out today’s “Sark doesn’t rest on his laurels” offering). Here at Surly, Johnny Manziel could be caught fucking Hitler’s corpse and it would be buried in the same thread we’ve used for 12 years.

This is Brian Kellner's (BKs) channel right? He's a cool guy, he left his Houston sports gig to return to Austin and try this.  This picture reminds me of the netzero days... site that had free internet...

Even Netzero wasn’t that visually intrusive.

I just read this whole thread, so I wanted to jump in here.

First of all, I appreciate everyone's opinion. And more specifically I agree with some folks here about certain issues.

I want everyone to know that we don't think or expect the OTF message board to be for everyone. In fact, we know it won't be. It's simply not what we're attempting to do.

There are already places where people are comfortable and where they enjoy being.

SurlyHorns is a perfect example of this. Folks enjoy this place. Clearly. Hell, I enjoy it when I come over here, that's one of the reasons I first reached out to Rick, so I totally get it.

The second part is really important to me and why we manage the OTF message board the way we do in comparison to other "premium" sites...

When I say dozens of recruits, parents of recruits, and parents of existing players on the team watch or listen to OTF daily, it is a very real thing.

I think every single recruit who committed to Texas last year - all of them - knows and has watched OTF. I'm not saying that to brag, I'm saying it because that specific viewership brings a certain level of responsibility to OTF as it relates to the university on the whole.

In my opinion, it's important to have a place like the OTF message boards and a site like OTF to be relatively clean. Not without opinion mind you, but certainly one that would not shock the system of newcomers either.

I feel like OTF does a really good job of holding up that end of the bargain, and we will continue to do so.

The third thing is this:

While Surly is primarily a message board/community. OTF is primarily a news service with a community attached.

OTF is much more like Orangebloods, Inside Texas or Horns247.

Each of those sites, I have found through the years, gets extremely provincial. They don't like it when another site is referenced or they get petty about their own reporting, etc.

I've been doing this stuff for 30 years and I'm just done with that.

I also know that some parents of recruits sometimes subscribe to those sites, visit the message boards, and they see a bunch of in-fighting, followed by nudie pics, name calling, or cliques that live to make fun of others, and the parents immediately think to themselves, what the hell is going on at Texas?

Is that's what's best for Texas?

So for me, this is NOT about OTF vs OB. Or OTF vs IT.

This is really about Texas vs the rest of college football/college sports. And that's what I want the focus of OTF to be about.

We appreciate everyone who has joined OTF. We're doing our best to bring you news whether it's via video/podcast or the website and I think we're doing it in a way that is best for all involved. It won't be for everyone and we get that.

I just appreciate the folks who have given us a chance and who continue to support what we're trying to do.

Thanks, Bobby

You're not Geoff, Eric, or Chip so you have that going for you, which is nice.

Keep up the good work and keep the board clean. Truly the consistent growth in online communities are the ones that are more clean than cesspoolish(outside of porn sites). The cesspoolish ones tend to get stagnant once the initial glimmer wears off. They'll continue to get members but it's not consistent or large enough over years.

I'm not going to lie, making short drive by mocking posts over there might be a new thing I do once or twice a day, as much as it's possible for me to even be remotely subtle.

you're a good dude.  keep up the good work with the YouTube channel.  it has certainly enhanced my longhorn fandom over the past couple of football seasons.  i have nothing but respect for you, Gerry, and Blake for producing listenable content on a daily basis.

Thank you for all you do.   You are a good dude who cares about the University unlike some of your competitors.  I appreciate your insight in this thread and it will definitely make me visit the site and your coverage more knowing this is your perspective. So I guess I just want to say that the time you took to put that perspective together for us will hopefully result in more of us engaging over there.  It will for me. Best of luck moving forward.

there's soo many now.. from multiple platforms..  I usually just watch OTF in the morning as I begin my work day.. and occasionally catch the recruiting show in the afternoon with Gerry.  I visit the boards here for real time news for the most part

You have to pump out content to make money, grow your channel, pay employees and keep people engaged.

It's certainly a lot if you want to listen to each video they put out, but I like that OTF has consistent programming. I can watch a replay of coffee and football on 1.5x speed during lunch and catch up fairly quickly on anything notable. Also can skip over the 5 superchats a day asking about the interior defensive line.

right now during the offseason i just listen to C&F as i get ready for work in the mornign and hear whatever is covered during that time frame and i don't really bother with any of the rest of them.  during the season, i'll make a habit to go back and watch the entire episode each day and i also watch a couple of the livestreams throughout the week as well.  my favorite one they do is the reaction pod right after the games end.  i'm usually buzzed to drunk by the time those start, but i always put them on nonetheless.

C&F is usually about 1hr 15min long, but I never watch it live, so I can fast forward through the ad reads, resets where they go over the top news again, basketball talk, and any time CJ Vogel talks.  About 30 min max.

So the point of the different shows being different things is just that. Coffee and football stands alone vs the other shows. The point isn’t to consume every single piece of content it’s to pick the thing you like and make it a regular thing you can depend on daily.

I definitely get this, but my quibble is just that they put out some stuff that just doesn't work (Football Theory) where they basically just talk about the same thing every Tuesday and Thursday. It would be nice if they did way more recruiting and team news as opposed to having people asking the questions on C&F.

Not that I ever really did understand, but I am at a loss as to what's happened or what's happening. I have no frame of reference. I'm like a child who wanders into a movie ...

It appears there are a bunch of new longhorn-related recruiting podcasts or YouTube shows or whatever you want to call them and the audience has been so fractured that, among other things, this recruiting board is dying.

The switch of the internet from a place where everyone pitched in and created content together (even if it was as silly as a cfb recruiting message board) to a place where a small number of people talk on video to a large number of passive listeners is one of my least favorite modern trends.

So, fair is fair. I've noticed an uptick in good posters/discussion on the OTF board. Fewer dudes using their own names and pictures and doing nothing but thanking Bobby and Gerry.

While this is nice, it is peak off season so only the die-hard degenerates like us are still loosely paying attention.  All of the filthy casuals have lost interest in asking about Micah Hudson for the twentieth time and have wandered off somewhere else to complain about baseball or politics.  They’ll be back in the fall.

I am very aware that pudgily consuming content made by 18 year olds and quietly drooling while your wife complains about you to her next door neighbor in his bedroom is your preferred way of living.

Whatever you say on those types of streamers what they do works. Each time him, Aiden Ross, or etc stream they’re getting 50-100k viewers a day. It’s the content that resonates with the young crowd and that it’s important for OTF since they’re a digital video formats organization. It’s also why this sites demographics is what it is because this is a boomer format of internet. It’s smart of them to do things how they are.

Comparing the audiences and demographics of people whose brands revolve around defense of rapists/Andrew Tate dicksucking and the hyperfocused University of Texas sports podcasts mainly catering to fans and alumni of sports with little international reach due to the nature of college sports is pretty insane to me

It's peak offseason, and we don't have many recruits, and the big time ones aren't dropping till late in the summer. It's dead for a reason. See the two posts below.

I don’t disagree. Certainly my kids are that way. Great for them.

But I’m GenX and don’t want to sit around watching videos all day. Not to go old man screaming at clouds, but endlessly scrolling YT and TikTok and Reels ain’t for me. So this site is, in fact, perfect. It’s irreverent. Funny. Occasionally intelligent. Seeing you get bitch slapped on the regular. Can jump in and out. Just enough information to keep the cheese puns tolerable. It’s great.

This is where I am as well.

I appreciate the audio only podcasts on Spotify for time in the car, running or sitting on an airplane. That’s found time for me to get caught up on information. Maybe I’m in the minority but I like both IT and OTF.
