79, IMO.

I think he chose 15 because it's his lucky lane at the bowling alley.

Report: Former Wisconsin HC Paul Chryst no longer with Texas football

image.png.0811fdbe6b6e4ec081aba21fa0f7bdc8.png

Story by Ben Kenney      1h ago

Longtime Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst is no longer on the Texas coaching staff, according to a report from On3's Inside Texas.

Chryst was an offensive analyst and a special assistant to Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian during the 2023 season.

It appears his agreement with Texas was only for the 2023 season, though the former Wisconsin head coach was recently spotted at Green Bay Packers practice with other members of the Texas coaching staff.

It was Chryst's first public football-related appearance in the state of Wisconsin since he was fired as Badgers head coach in October 2022 -- a firing that came after the program's 2-3 start to the season and demoralizing home loss to Bret Bielema and Illinois.

Chryst's departure from the program concluded a stellar Wisconsin career that included three years as a player, eight years as an assistant coach and seven-plus years as the program's head coach. He finished with an overall record of 67-26 as head coach, three Big Ten West titles and a bowl record of 6-1 -- the one loss coming to Oregon in the 2020 Rose Bowl.

The veteran coach's only year on the Texas staff included a 12-2 record, Big 12 title and College Football Playoff appearance.

Chryst's coaching destination for the 2024 football season is unknown. He was connected to Iowa’s vacant offensive coordinator position earlier this offseason -- a position that was eventually filled by former Western Michigan head coach (2017-2022) and Packers senior analyst (2023) Tim Lester.

Inside Texas article

Paul Chryst no longer with Texas football

Joe Cookby:Joe Cookabout 6 hours

Paul Chryst is no longer with the Texas football program, a University of Texas spokesman told Inside Texas late Wednesday night. Chryst was a special assistant to head coach Steve Sarkisian during the 2023 season.

Chryst arrived at Texas from Wisconsin after he was let go by the Badgers during the middle of the 2022 campaign. In Madison, Chryst was 67-26 as head coach.

Chryst was recently spotted alongside Texas tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Banks and offensive coordinator/O-line coach Kyle Flood at an organized team activity for the Green Bay Packers. He was not wearing any Longhorn branded gear, rather simple Under Armour garb.

All three special assistants from the 2023 season have now moved on from the program. Joe Decamillis left to become the special teams coordinator at South Carolina. Payam Saadat joined Jeff Choate at Nevada as the Wolf Pack’s associate head coach and interior defensive line coach.

As a head coach with stops at Wisconsin and Pitt, Chryst was 86-45.

I heard he's living with Gary Patterson

They are going to start a Bed & Breakfast called Snow and Sweat. GP provides the live music and Chryst makes skyline chili.

5-10 lbs at this point in the summer should be a piece of cake to get off by fall camp. That is encouraging.

That's one way to look at it. The other is that he's on a personalized nutrition program, workout and training regimen, his meals are potentially prepared for him, he has access to world class training  equipment, and tubby still can't get his weight where it's supposed to be.

Considering where he was at the start of the Spring, and the fact that we thought he was gone to the portal, I would call it a win.

Now comes the HEAT and summer training, so he’ll drop another 10, but gain explosiveness for his DL position.

At least I hope so.

Hook’em!!!

After seeing (and hearing) Kenny Baker in spring practice, I have high hopes fo the DL and Sydir personally.

Hook'em is the word.

Peak offseason content

Of 134 FBS teams, only 55 return their HC, OC, DC, Strength coach, and starting QB. Of those teams, only 4 return a 3rd or 4th year starter at QB: Okie lite, Ole Miss, Utah, and Texas.

The concept of continuity is a funny thing in college football.

Every head coach aspires to build it, but few actually get to do so. It's a sport that is transient in nature, where players stay for four to five years (in theory, at least) and start for one or two. Position coaches aspire to be coordinators, and good coordinators don't often stay coordinators for long.

In this sport, continuity is often a Catch 22. It takes continuity -- of scheme, of culture -- to win, but you have to win to build it. Round and round the cycle goes. That's not to say continuity is always good or attrition is always bad, but in general it's hard to build something of significance if you're always renovating the ground floor.

According to FootballScoop research, 55 of 134 (41 percent) FBS teams will return their head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and strength and conditioning coach (including internal promotions). Extend that study to the proverbial coach on the field, the starting quarterback, and the number drops to 32. That's a tick below a quarter of FBS membership.

Here is a look by conference.

American (4 of 14)
Charlotte
Memphis
South Florida
UAB

ACC (5 of 15)
Clemson
SMU
Stanford
Virginia
Virginia Tech

Big Ten (3 of 18)
Illinois
Nebraska
Purdue

Big 12 (6 of 14)
Iowa State*
Kansas State*
Oklahoma State
Texas Tech
Utah
West Virginia

Conference USA (2 of 10)
FIU
Liberty

FBS Independents (1 of 6)
Army

MAC (2 of 12)
Bowling Green
Miami (Ohio)

Mountain West (2 of 12)
Colorado State
Fresno State

SEC (4 of 16)
Florida
Georgia
Ole Miss
Texas

Sun Belt (3 of 14)
Appalachian State
Arkansas State
Old Dominion

A number of schools like Florida State, Oregon and Texas State return their "core four" coaches and brought in experienced transfers, but only 32 of the 134 FBS teams picked up where they left off as the 2023 season ended and '24 began by bringing back all five of the most important people in their program. This allowed those select 32 to hit the ground sprinting over winter conditioning, spring football, and now summer conditioning with training camp not too far away.

Charlotte, Colorado State, Liberty, Nebraska, Purdue, South Florida, Stanford and UAB all look like solid candidates to make noticeable jumps from 2023 to '24 as they all enter Year 2 under their new regimes.

However, the following programs return all four coaches and multi-year starting quarterbacks.

OKLAHOMA STATE: HC Mike Gundy and S&C Rob Glass in Year 20, Kasey Dunn in Year 14 on staff and Year 5 as OC, DC Bryan Nardo in Year 2, QB Alan Bowman in Year 7 of college football and Year 2 at OSU

OLE MISS: HC Lane Kiffin entering Year 5, OC Charlie Weis, Jr. and S&C Nick Savage in Year 3, DC Pete Golding in Year 2, and QB Jaxon Dart in his fourth year of college, Year 3 at Ole Miss

TEXAS: HC Steve Sarkisian, OC Kyle Flood, DC Pete Kwiatkowski and S&C Torre Becton all enter Year 4, QB Quinn Ewers enters Year 3.

UTAH: HC Kyle Whittingham enters Year 18, OC Andy Ludwig in Year 6, DC Morgan Scalley has been with the program 23 of the last 24 years, S&C Doug Elisaia in Year 18, and QB Cameron Rising in Year 7 of college football and Year 3 as Utah's starter.

Some odds and ends from early workouts:

- Jay’Vion Cole has impressed early in on-field work.

- So has Andrew Mukuba. Despite the return of both Michael Taffe and Derek Williams at safety, it is simply going to be very hard to keep Mukuba out of the starting lineup come August. Mukuba is said to be extremely consistent at a fairly high level.

I would be so, so happy if Mukuba could keep Taffe off the field. I like Taffe and I've been thankful that he's been in the safety room to set the floor, but we need better. His athleticism just isn't there for the position. I know some people appreciate his knowledge of the position and some other people just hate him for being a former walk-on (white) DB, but there's no disagreement that we need a better athlete back there.

So it will be us and Ole Miss in the SECCCG then. That will be fun.

- Jermayne Lole and Bill Norton, along with Alfred Collins, may end up being the top three interior DLs on the 2024 squad. Lole has looked particularly good and Norton’s size was perhaps an undeappreciated factor prior to his arrival.

Think we'll end up being just fine at DL.  Savea looked good in the spring game and at Arizona and he'll definitely play/rotate in.  Will probably still see Broughton some and hopefully Bryant/Bledsoe/Mitchell take the next step for depth/give some snaps.

DT is just one of those position groups that take extra time baking to be ready in most cases. Sweat went from practically useless for 3 years to serviceable his 4th and the best in the nation his 5th. Even Byron Murphy, who worked as hard as anyone and was motivated from the beginning, started to look solid his 2nd year but wasn't a force until his 3rd.

Give Sydir and the other 1st/2nd year guys time to bake. The 3rd year guys can be expected to start showing they have something this season.

Bobby and Gerry were pretty hyped about Silas Bolden yesterday saying his influence is already ringing through the WR room that everyone better be on notice and up their game because he's coming for a starting spot.

I have chuckled at the "he'll be a depth/gadget guy" comments these last few months. He's a dude.

Just a few team notes from this week:

* New cornerbacks Jay'Vion Cole and Santana Wilson have both been working primarily on install this week. They both needed to get the calls down, understand the nuances of Texas' defense, etc. Over the next few weeks, they'll go more and more in depth with that with coaches.

Cole's combo of quickness and athleticism has been impressive so far in workouts.

* Colton Vasek was recently described by one source as one of the most pleasant surprises of the spring. If you'll recall, Vasek began the spring dinged up and out of action, even worrying some that he might never be truly healthy enough to play football on a consistent basis.

But by the end of spring, according to a source, he looked like "he has a chance to be a Sunday player." Vasek has continued that ascent this off-season.

* Speaking of edge play and pass rush, I was told that Trey Moore and Colin Simmons are "just different" from others on the roster when it comes to getting after the passer. Both have elite traits.

* Defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell continues to battle his weight issues. While a full participant in drills, Mitchell's weight has vacillated since returning to Austin. Suffice to say, it's an ongoing struggle for the sophomore from New Jersey.

Combine that with Willams and Makuba at safety and you have to feel encouraged that the secondary will be better this year. I also think teams will try to be more balanced against us this year for obvious reasons which should cut down on passing attempts.

That remains to be seen, if I'm an opposing OC. There's too much film out there having trouble defending the pass.

Now if you want to spin it in the direction you're taking, I think it's reasonable to conclude we'll be tested more in the running game since Murphy and Sweat are gone. But even in that vantage point, an OC might be even more inclined to pass in the absence of so much interior pressure.

Fair but that’s were the expected improvement in edge rush becomes big.

Not sure where to put this, but on our Big 12 Championship rings, they put FAFO.
"Under the crown are the letters “FAFO,” short for “F**K Around and Find Out,” a mantra the team used throughout the season. An inscription with the UT Tower surrounded by the numbers 49-21, the final score of the Longhorns’ win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the championship game, is under FAFO."

I hope they send one to Yormarks office.

I'm going to go ahead and put zero stock in any of those PFF ratings. Did anyone watch Gavin Holmes last year and think this guy will be one of the top returning CB's in the SEC? How much stock do you put in what Cole did against the murderers row San Jose State faced? Vandy has two of the top 4 returning corners in the SEC? That seems... unlikely.

There are definitely reasons for optimism for improved pass defense the least of which should be a better rush off the edge, but along with the DT, it's the biggest unknown going into the fall to me. There are quite a few new players to integrate and lingering scheme questions about the cohesiveness between the front and back end, and on top of that the DB coaches are perceived to be this staff's weakest link.
