Texas shot the ball well from the three-point line. That included Jayson Kent hitting three triples, and Kadin Shedrick hitting a pair of three-pointers.

if shedrick is hitting multiple threes in a game our opponents are fucked.

it’s really tough to say. this team has a lot of guard/perimeter talent, and figuring out who plays well together could see the lineup evolve throughout the year. best guess at opening night starting five would be

pope

johnson

mark

kaluma

shedrick

that's the most experienced starting five that includes tre johnson, and pope is the only true PG on the team, so i can see RT going with group in the beginning.

the point about Pope is also somewhat concerning. we have a lot of talented players but it isn’t clear and obvious how they all fit together, or even if they *will* fit together in an ideal way. i’m not sure who the true floor leader/alpha player will be, or if there will even be one. my biggest hope would be that tre johnson turns out to be so special that he becomes that guy as the season goes on. that’s a lot to ask of a freshman though.

i could see this team being a bit similar to auburn last year- yes, they were deep and talented, but because they relied on different people every night they never established a real leader or a guy or two who they’d always go to when the game got tight, and that’s even with johni broom. this is the toughest Texas team to handicap preseason in over a decade. i won’t be surprised if we have 3-4 different starting lineups before we settle on one.

I think Kent will be the player that surprises the most people. Based on everything I've read so far, he's really good.

I saw some of practice today and that was my impression as well.

As I mentioned, I got to check out practice today. I don’t think much can be gleaned from drills and scrimmage, but I’ll just mention some of my thoughts. I’m a fan of basketball, not an expert so my observations are rudimentary.
It looked like to me the emphasis was on tempo.
A lot of new faces and still trying to figure out who was who.  I did notice Weaver making quite a few outside shots which was good to see. The hustle is still there.  I’m always amazed at how high he can get off the ground.
I’ll be curious to see what others think but Shedrick to my eyes, looked like he was playing at a much lighter weight than last year.  He seemed to be moving much better than last year so hopefully he is over all the injuries.
Looking at the body types of the players I don’t think we are going to be pushing anyone around down low.
As I said above, Kent really caught my eye as standing out.
Johnson has a nice shot and during a break he went around the arch and made pretty much all but a couple of threes.
The players did seem supportive of each other and generally seemed to work well together. It may be that it’s going to take some time to really get the chemistry going. I say that because I did see some really good passing under the bucket but unfortunately the passes seemed to be a real surprise to the recipient.
While the assistants ran some parts of the practice, RT was super engaged and hands on.
I really enjoy seeing games at Moody and it did get me excited for the season.

I thought he was very underrated in the transfer rankings.

His stats from last season were awesome.

Beal was there.

Oh shit, I just saw that Grayson Allen is on the Suns. Was he there? If him and Ted Cruz were there, does that multiply the curse?

Didn't see The Tripper.

The big thing with Kent (like Jabari Rice) is he was undervalued in the portal rankings because he didn't produce much in his first few years.

But I don't view that as a bad thing when a player improves every year. Some guys just take 3 or 4 years to reach their ceiling at this level.

Wasn't Larry the Sycamores PG?  For some reason I was under that impression.

Odd here, high school basketball starts in a few days/weeks….. odd time to switch coaches….. also TMI Maxpreps basketball page lists Bruce Bowen as the head coach…. NBA all over the place.

yeah i’ve been doing my best not to get my hopes up about Tre because it’s been so long since we’ve had an impact freshman of his kind on the perimeter that it’s hard to believe. but damn it, this kid can hoop.

I have more hope with Tre because he's a different mold than previous 5 stars.

More skilled versus just being an athletic freak. This is why I think the recruiting rankings value pro potential too much. They prioritize athletic potential way too much over being college-ready.

Guys calm down my peener can only get so stiff.

Also - if he does wind up being that good - we need to give RT and the staff massive props for keeping the kid at home.

These feel like the type of recruits that the KD branding helps with, too.

With Flagg being in this class highest ranking achievable is 2 IMO.

Flagg hasn't done shit. Good prospect but we know nothing about him as a player yet. Tre could easily go first in the draft even assuming they both stay healthy.

Here are the #1 recruits since 2014:

- Mudiay (huge bust - zero NBA career)

- Ben Simmons (decent NBA career that has gone off the rails)

- Josh Jackson (bust)

- Marvin Bagley (bust)

- RJ Barrett (NBA rotation guy)

- Ant

- Cade Cunningham

- Chet

- Nick Smith TBD

- Ron Holland TBD but looking like firm bust territory

Did you watch Stromile Swift in college?

Doesn't matter what he's done or what he looks like until he plays a game in college let alone the league. The road to being an NBA star is full of trash in the medians.

BTW I'm not saying Flagg won't be good - just that there's zero way to know he'll be better than Tre or any other guy in the top 10 so far.

You said he can't jump Flagg. You're talking about prospects that have played 0 minutes at the college level. Do you think the draft rankings are static from August until next June?

Flagg is the overwhelming #1 draft pick in the NBA draft he's been that for years now for his class. Unless he completely shits the bed, not likely. He's going to be that.

Then go put a bunch of money on it.

I'm not disagreeing with you I'm telling you that hoops prospects flame out all the fucking time. There isn't a law saying Flagg has to go #1 - if someone outplays him and showcases as a better prospect they may get drafted before him.

tre is not going to pass flagg, ace bailey, or dylan harper (or a few other prospects in his class) but he does have a chance to be the biggest impact freshman at Texas since isaiah taylor, and that’s good enough for me.

If he keeps dropping 30 spots he could pass a bunch of people.

But I agree - just need him to contribute to winning. Texas isn't a vehicle for one guy to raise his stock.

I'm starting to think we have a sneaky-good - EE type season.

Flagg is probably the prospect with the most pro potential. He's also only 17 years old.

He went 3/9 in an exhibition last night and struggled offensively. This is what I was talking about above. Is Tre Johnson the best pro prospect in the class? Probably not but he might be the most college-ready as a FR.

I think the bigger point is just because a player goes #1 doesn't mean they're the most college-ready player in that class.

I have a lot of doubts about a 17 year old producing at a high level in college. When is the last time a recruit that reclassified had a bunch of success? It seems like it's almost always a failure.

Flagg is just starting his pro clock a year early and I don't blame him.

Yeah, 100% we would have had a completely different team with Holland and Johnson last year. They went #5 and #23 in the draft. Johnson easily fits there in the 2025 draft, but he will have a team filled with veteran college players so that he doesn't have to feel the pressure of being a one and done lottery pick.
