Injury update from Gerry - good news on Kent.

The Texas Longhorns (9-2) will be back on the court Thursday facing a New Orleans (2-7) team that won't provide a test.

Texas is once again expected to play without star freshman shooting guard Tre Johnson (21.1 ppg). Johnson is expected back on the court after the Christmas break.

Senior forward Jayson Kent will return to the Longhorns this season. After suffering a wrist injury, there was some thought he may take a medical redshirt if he missed enough of the season. That will not happen, as he is expected back on the court sooner than initially expected. There is the possibility Kent could play Thursday night, but if not a return December 29 vs. Northwestern State is looking very likely.

Fuck yes.

Moved up 7 spots in NET overnight to #40. We are actually ahead of undefeated OU (#42).

0-2 Q1

1-0 Q2

2-0 Q3

7-0 Q4

Based on current NET rankings, 14 of our 18 SEC games will be Q1. Remaining 4 will be Q2.

Up to 35 in NET. We actually aren't in a bad position at all.

Ohio State finally got Aaaron Bradshaw back from suspension and ran Kentucky off the court. That loss is frustrating because they're so much better than 8-4 but they've had a couple key players suspended. Either way, it will probably still end up a Q1 loss.

If we can pick off a couple top 50 wins SEC play, we should be fine to make the tournament.

I mean, last year we managed to beat Baylor at home, @ OU, lost to UH in OT, won @ TCU and won @ Tech.  I'm not saying we are going 9-9 in SEC play, but come on, we aren't going to be 5-13 or some shit that people are acting like, because we lost to Ohio State in game 1 and got beaten by a healthy defending two time champ.

Auburn 1
Tennessee 2
Florida 4
Alabama 10
Miss St 13
Kentucky 19
Georgia 26
aggy 27
Ole Miss 31
Vandy 38
OU 42
Missouri 45

Of those 14 games, 8 are at home, and most of the away games are against the lesser teams in the top 50 to date.

I don’t think we have been close to playing to our potential yet. Pope should be a real force on the offensive end, and he showed that last game. Mark is also just getting comfortable. Tre Johnson has been hurt and also is adjusting to not having to be “the man” every possession. Kent has been hurt.

If we put all the pieces together we can beat anybody. Terry has shown the last two years that the team has gotten better as the season progressed. Let’s hope the trend holds.

There's actually a lot to like about this team offensively.

We don't turn the ball over (#1 in TO%) and we shoot really well from 3 (#4 in 3p%). The issue offensively is we aren't a good offensive rebounding team and are mediocre at getting to the FT line.

It would be nice to get Kent back who would help in both those areas.

The last 2 games we've seen a higher volume of 3-point attempts.

We quietly have one of the best 3 point shooting teams we've ever had. Currently #4 in 3 point % per T-rank. I think Terry might have recognized that we actually need to shoot more 3s with the way we shoot it from 3.

That will be fantastic if true, but I'll wait to see if that percentage holds up in conference against teams with similar athletes and in hostile environments. The competition we have faced so far has largely been dogshit. Against the 5 teams that had a fucking pulse, we shot 26%, 27%,  30%, 36%, 47% (Uconn, go figure). The recent trend is encouraging, and yeah we're shooting 41.5% on the season, but stats against teams ranked in the 300's can be misleading.

against the last 2 power conference teams (UCONN and NC State) we shot 47.1% in both games.

I think the big takeaway from both those games is we didn't shoot enough 3s. We should be shooting 25-28 3s a game the way we shoot it. 17 is not nearly enough the way we shoot it.

UConn is the only team of the 5 decent teams we played where we shot above our season average. That average is likely artificially high, due to shitty competition. We shot 5/14 against ncst.

Using the Massey odds for each game, ChatGPT gives the following odds:
Winning 0 games: 7.23%
Winning 1 game: 25.27%
Winning 2 games: 34.82%
Winning 3 games: 23.67%
Winning 4 games: 7.95%
Winning 5 games: 1.06%

People use ChatGPT to do math?  Does it do it right?

I’m sure this has been discussed but the non-conference schedule takes several years in the making, right, I.e., this is basically the Beard non-conference schedule?  Because it’s straight garbage and if it’s CDC signing off on it then he needs some criticism.

Feel like most of these games are on-off done on a yearly basis. The big matchups are likely done a year or two prior, like our home and away with UConn in 24/25. Tournaments are usually announced a year prior with matchups known closer to the year

No, the schedule is at most made a year out. For example, they are already announcing November/December tournament teams for next year. The only tournament I know that’s 2 years out is Maui.

Non con schedules are usually finalized by late summer. So yes, this is RTs schedule.

Probably at least partly a function of shooting threes so well.

But 9 is better than 8.

Definitely. I think 7-11 will even get some SEC team in. Maybe not us because we didn't have a huge non-conference win but I think it will get some other SEC teams in.

Based on some metrics, the SEC is the best conference in college basketball in like 20 years.

It’s going to be close. Luckily, we get most of the difficult games at home. Is UConn better or worse than some of the top conference teams coming into Moody?

I’m interested in seeing how RT navigates this because it has a chance to go in so many different directions.

I did a similar post last year before conference play. Path to 9 conference wins:

Must win 3 of 4 against the bottom of the league (3)- Missouri, at South Carolina, at LSU, at Vandy

Need to go 4-3 against the homes and homes we have + Georgia (4): OU x2, Arkansas x2, A&M x2, Georgia

Split the road games at Mississippi  schools (1)- at Miss State, at Ole Miss

Pray we get hot from 3 and steal one as a big underdog (1)- Auburn, Tennessee, at Florida, Bama, Kentucky

That’s a pretty narrow needle to thread.

It is. I found my post from last year. That one was the path to 10-8 and we finished 9-9

The path to 10 conference wins (which probably means top 6-7 seed) is probably this:

Must sweep (2): WVU

Must split at minimum (2): OU, Tech

Must win at home (3): KSU, UCF, OSU

Need 2 of 3 (2): at TCU, at Cincy, ISU at home

Steal one (1): at KU, at BYU, at and vs Baylor, at and vs Houston

We didn't sweep WVU but swept OU to make up for it.

We hit what was needed in the final two groups but the stupid loss to UCF kept us from 10-8.

So strat is game net OOC and pray for .500 in conference?

Any smart coach/AD should do this.

Vic Schaefer has been using the "good teams won't play us at home" angle which is probably true but I'm pretty sure they've also realized you can game NET by playing bad teams and destroying them. It's why they're #1 in NET.

I mean Vic Schaefer can prove it by having to travel to teams such Depaul, James Madison, and Richmond just to fill a schedule.

On the surface it's a good strategy but once you get to conference and get completely shit on is it that good of a strategy?
