I was just going to come on here to talk about this. Is there even a planet where we go 2-3 in those 5 games?

I have it like this

0-5: 80%

1-4: 15%

2-3: 4%

3-2 or better: 1%

80%?

Come on man. I'd say 1-4 is most likely, 2-3 2nd most likely, 3-2 third most likely, and all the other outcomes very unlikely.

The team has too much talent to go 0-5 in that stretch.

Why do we have like 15 coaches now? Last game, there were 9 guys in white shirts and 6 in orange shirts on or behind the bench.

Penders usually ran with 2 guys, Barnes with 3. Why the huge inflation these days?

because the rules, regulations, and policies surrounding assistant coaches and personnel staff have all changed and progressed since the days of Barnes and Penders.

What Texas has on the sidelines is no different than other major programs.

Given the strength of the conference, I think the seeding would work out as follows (with the percentages being the odds of that seed or better):

  • 7-11 - 10 seed, 50/50 make the tourney    (78% chance)
  • 8-10 - 8-9 seed, 90% make the tourney  (61% chance)
  • 9-9 - 6-7 seed  (42% chance)
  • 10-8 - 5-6 seed (24% chance)
  • 11-7 - 5 seed (11% chance)
  • 12-6 - 4 seed (4% chance)
  • 13-5 - 3 seed (1.3% chance)
  • 14-4 - 2 seed (1 in 300+)
  • 15-3 - 1 seed (1 in 2,000+)
  • 16-2 or better - #1 overall seed - (1 in 13,000+)

I said after the early OSU loss that if we didn't improve we'd be doing well to win 19 games and get a 10 seed. Still tracking roughly that way. I think the chances of finishing with 18 wins and missing the tourney are just as good, especially if Johnson misses any more time. We'll probably know a lot more about March once these next five games have been played.

Haven’t watched a ton of this bball team, especially recently.
Statistically seem to be pretty damn good offensively [level of competition aside]:
84.5 pts/gm - 29th nationally
51.7% FG% - T1st nationally
41.7% 3FG% - 3rd nationally

What to look for early in this one tonight to gauge if we’re doing what we need to do to get a Dub vs Aggie?

Can't get dominated on the boards. The usual of shooting and turnovers.

I would've liked to have seen Codie get more playing time in the nonconference. He seems to have a silky midrange game for a freshmen big.

This season could quickly become be a total disaster. We have a poorly constructed roster that is shaping up to get bent over in conference play and a demonstrable lack of interest in the program (which I personally put much of the blame on Terry for the weak ass non conference schedule he put together).

Having our two toughest opponents at home in TN and Auburn while the students haven’t come back from break or are otherwise not back from the Cotton Bowl is going to limit any sort of home court advantage, if you would even call it that. I have been going to games for 25 years and don’t recall an atmosphere as lame as we consistently have.

I hate hero ball, but it seems like Tre getting hot and pouring it on is the only way we are going to be able to win some games.

What about defense, there are lots of teams out there better than Aggy off the dribble drive and Aggy did it all night long. Then there is getting killed on the boards and committing a hundred fouls every game.

Lay back and enjoy it if we suck this year. That will get us a new staff. This staff is never going to win anything. I have no idea who the right hire will be going forward, but there are enough people that care about the program and enough advantages that a competent coach will have us just fine, and a good staff should be able to compete for punchers chance to win it all. This too shall pass.

I am an admitted Terry apologist, so it is hard to enjoy watching the ship go down. I really want him to succeed and appreciate the last couple seasons, but this one is looking like a nightmare.

I don’t understand being a Terry apologist. He’s Peter Principled as a big time program head coach. He’s just fine as a #1 assistant, recruiting, relate to the players type.

Pretty simple for me and this should probably go into the RT thread (I won’t post about it anymore)- we had a defcon level 1 situation when he took over, and we still had a legit chance at a national title appearance if not for bad injury luck. I thought he deserved a shot after that. I think it is perfectly reasonable to have given him support strictly for that.

I expected nothing good to come from hiring him full time. I had zero problem with giving him 2 years to see if he could make do and was better than I thought- because of what you said. It’s time. That doesn’t get to consign us to mediocrity because he held together a talented and experienced team. That’s what the paycheck is for, right?  But, perfectly reasonable take.

Still bummed that we had our guy for a generation and it turned out the way it did.

Generally speaking, never fucking root for a coach. Are you related to the person? No? Then get a fucking grip.

Texas provides every resource imaginable for coaches to be successful on campus. Win or get the fuck out, you fucking loser. Maybe don’t get into a slapfight with your psycho fiancée or avoid just being generally mediocre at everything you do while embarrassing the entire program and fanbase by bawling about “horns down” on national tv. It’s infuriating.

Losing to ATM by 20 in basketball should be considered an instant firing offense. Find your own way back to clean out your fucking office, as the bus is full, dummy.

I’ll be cheering for the team the rest of the way, but if this dipshit wins something like 4 games in conference, I will accept the cold comfort that his performance will stick out like a sore thumb among the coaches on campus. They can then fire him without the media calling Texas a big bad meanie.

I see this season as a win/win no matter what happens.  If we win, awesome. I will always be excited to watch UT hoops make it to the big dance.  If we lose, it could help usher in a new staff who will probably (but not certainly) be better.

The aggy game was pretty much a perfect storm worst case opponent for us.  They are #1 in the country in offensive rebounding and we are a bad rebounding team. They were getting 2nd chance garbage points all night long.  They are also very good defensively, both on the perimeter and down low. I don't think we are as bad as we looked in that game.

I liked that we saw some lineups with Pope/Larry + Johnson + Mark + Kent + Kaluma.  We need that more going forward.

There are quite a few UT basketball fans who genuinely believe Texas has everything we need to be a major power in college basketball. We could be an extended version of the Barnes years up until 2009. We could be what Oats is building now at Alabama (which is one of the reasons he’s not leaving).

The day I woke up and saw the ESPN notification about Beard, I was fucking crushed because I knew he was the one to turn this thing into a monster for a long time. That’s not to say there aren’t others who could, but Beard got it and got UT.

I felt the way I felt when Colt went down. People at work legitimately asked if someone died I was so bummed.
