There are quite a few UT basketball fans who genuinely believe Texas has everything we need to be a major power in college basketball. We could be an extended version of the Barnes years up until 2009. We could be what Oats is building now at Alabama (which is one of the reasons he’s not leaving).

The day I woke up and saw the ESPN notification about Beard, I was fucking crushed because I knew he was the one to turn this thing into a monster for a long time. That’s not to say there aren’t others who could, but Beard got it and got UT.

I felt the way I felt when Colt went down. People at work legitimately asked if someone died I was so bummed.

I’m in that group man. I love UT hoops. I think we should view the first decade of the Barnes era as our birthright and act accordingly. Anyone who can’t do that should be short timing it here.

Yes, that’s what is so dispiriting about where we are now. We gave up a ton of momentum and alignment that Beard’s hiring had generated.

I see this season as a win/win no matter what happens.  If we win, awesome. I will always be excited to watch UT hoops make it to the big dance.  If we lose, it could help usher in a new staff who will probably (but not certainly) be better.

There's a purgatory option where we win enough to squeak into the tournament but have no real shot to win anything and look like garbage while doing it.   Its a real possibility and is definitely not a "win".

And we knew it would happen. Like, with almost complete certainty. Terry wasn't going to learn how to be a great head coach in his mid-50s.

Texas provides every resource imaginable for coaches to be successful on campus. Win or get the fuck out, you fucking loser. Maybe don’t get into a slapfight with your psycho fiancée or avoid just being generally mediocre at everything you do while embarrassing the entire program and fanbase by bawling about “horns down” on national tv. It’s infuriating.

Losing to ATM by 20 in basketball should be considered an instant firing offense. Find your own way back to clean out your fucking office, as the bus is full, dummy.

I’ll be cheering for the team the rest of the way, but if this dipshit wins something like 4 games in conference, I will accept the cold comfort that his performance will stick out like a sore thumb among the coaches on campus. They can then fire him without the media calling Texas a big bad meanie.

Agree.  RT runs shit offense, and our interior defense was disgusting vs aggy.  This is gonna be a rough season in conference games -- won't be good first season in SEC.

that was my concern before the season, but now having watched this team through the first 14 games, i'm not particularly concerned this teams squeaks into the tourney. we'll be lucky to notch 6 wins in conference.

Barnes peak still isn't good enough given our resources.  Here are the best KenPom 5-yr and 10-yr stretches for some schools with great coaches and arguably lesser resources than we have today:

  • Ohio St: 7.2 (2010-2014), 13.7 (2006-2015)
  • Baylor:  8.0 (2020-2024), 16.0 (2015-2024)
  • Mich. St 8.4 (2012-2016), 14.3 (2011-2020)
  • Arizona 9.8 (1997-2001), 13.4 (1997-2006)
  • Florida: 9.8 (2003-2007), 13.1 (1999-2008)
  • Texas:  15.6 (05-09), 16.2 (01-10)

That isn't even including teams like Kansas, UNC and Kentucky who we really should be competing with.

I think the thing that will ultimately doom RT is that the Moody Center is dead.  We have a brand new arena, one of the best in the entire sport, and it is just dead.  We can't have that.
