Texas has two pg’s who can’t break anybody down or get by them. No low post presence and the pick and roll or pick and pop tend to be ineffective.

When the game is close at the end and Texas needs to score how does it happen? Johnson or Kaluma make a move individually. And every coach knows it.

Texas used Johnson to cover Ziegler in the Tennessee game. Ziegler a low percentage outside shooter hits two 3s because Johnson plays off of him. When Tennessee needs a bucket in crunch time, Johnson still covers Ziegler and tightens up on him. Ziegler goes right by him and scores a layup. I don’t blame Johnson but the coaches who kept that defensive assignment.

And following that on offense we planned or allowed Johnson to take an off balance double teamed 3 pointer with just under a minute left to seal the loss … frustrating

If our coaching in crunch time is to let Johnson make something difficult happen, we need to scrap the coaching staff at seasons end … if Johnson is add libbing and not running plays, he needs a strong dose of the hard coaching rather than the have fun and be yourself variety

Come on.  This team is brutal to watch.

Okay? "Boring" says little to me about how good the team is. You can suck and be exciting, you can win a lot and be dull.

Yeah, few people would accuse a Beard or Bennett team of being exciting to watch, but they win.  Like watching paint dry.

I kind of found Beard’s Texas teams exciting because they played such good defense.

Updated conference probability distribution based on KenPom game odds:

image.png.a7b1f134ea40ae163b8585edd225583d.png

Only 25% chance we finish 6-12 or worse.  If we assume a 7-11 record gives us a 50% chance of a tourney bid, and an 8-10 record is 100% a tourney bid, then our tourney chances right now are about 65%.

Kenpom now has us 8-10 in conference. We moved from 38 to 36 last night.

Would only be 4 Q1 wins if using current NET rankings. I think we'd be in but it wouldn't be a slam dunk.

The fact we have moved up the NET rankings with a 1-3 start to conference play probably bodes well if we do get to 8 wins. IIRC we finished around 30th in NET last year with 5 Q1 wins in the regular season. Got us a 7-seed.

It is pretty wild that our first 8 conf games are all Q1 games, per the announcers last night (after Mizzou's Florida upset, they became a Q1 opponent).

I get Tre is a great player and will be one and done, but of the 5 sec games played he's been meh in 4 of them.

I don’t really see him playing much defense and he does not get to the FT line enough for me.

I asked someone yesterday who is a patron of the program while we were on a call sorting some other shit unrelated to basketball about the future.

The bottom line is that Terry is really well-liked, but he’s not motivating anyone. Money is down, attendance is down, ratings are down, and enthusiasm is down. The biggest problem for him is that the Moody Center is dead during games and poorly attended.

He has to make it to the second weekend or he’s gone.

This is supposed to be his thing. I've heard players call him a "motivational coach". As opposed to a coach coach, I guess.

That’s mostly bullshit.

I won’t tell the story that my friend told me in private, but a recent meeting with key boosters for both NIL and infrastructure bombed in ways that were uncomfortable to hear relayed. He would have been more motivating if he’d have showed up nude and drug his balls all over the snack table, dumped the tea urn over the top of his head and then walked out the entry door while whistling dixie.

I thought motivational coach just means he’s not a hard ass

To be fair, that might motivate the Surly crowd.

Can’t build a program with one and done players. It’s Shaka all over again except RT might be worse.

Forgot to say that the other big thing is that there is a feeling among everyone observing that this team is getting outcoached every game.

The thing is, this looks like a poorly constructed roster because of how badly they have been coached. But it is actually a very solidly constructed roster. This might be the best shooting team ever at Texas. And we have great length on the perimeter. We have decent size down low. We have guys who CAN play defense, but they don’t. We have energy guys in Weaver and Kent. We have 3 guys who can score 30+ in Pope, Johnson and Kaluma. Mark probably can as well.

But the sum is less than the parts. They don’t play team defense. Or really any defense at all. They are boring ISO ball on offense. They don’t know how to close out games. It is an injustice to have this much talent and be this shitty.

Meh...I don't buy it. Our numbers look better than usual because we feasted against the mostly dogshit slate of teams in a non-conference schedule that did fuck all to prepare our squad for conference play. Now that we are playing quality opposition in conference, our in-conference only stats show our FG% dropping to  41% and our 3FG% dropping to 29% (compared to our overall numbers of 49%/38%). I will acknowledge we had a tough stretch of games to begin conf play so the numbers may improve a bit, but our conference only stats show us ranked 10th in both categories.  That  makes "best shooting team ever" a hard sell for me.

I don’t think any SEC roster whose only playable big guys are Shedrick and Onyema can be considered solid. I know this isn’t all RT’s fault since we wouldn’t pay Toppin, but nevertheless, it is a glaring flaw.
Posted

Yup. While Onyema has been a mild surprise Shedrick has sucked ass. This team unfortunately just isn’t very good and I don’t think there is anything RT can do about it now. Thankfully if we miss the tournament there is no way we bring him back.

Vinson played well at the start of the season. That’s another big. But if it was me I wouldn’t start any of them and go small with Kent and Kaluma.

If this isn’t the best shooting team we have had, what is?

Maybe a blessing in disguise we couldn’t get Toppin. He’d elevate our interior play, we’d be a better team and RT probably stays longer

I see you've entered the "acceptance" stage of grief.

Calling Vinson a quality big is laughable. He doesn't ever see the floor against anybody worth a damn. Maybe someday he will be a good player, but right now he is just a body on the bench.

This is a real post on the OTF board. I can only assume he was being serious.

"Part of me hopes we build the team next season around the young group of reserves that have gotten to build chemistry in practice instead of chasing stats in the portal. Pope, Weaver, Pryor, Codie, Vinson with Presley and Clark off the bench. Pick up a couple role players from the portal to round out the bench."

That would be the worst team in the history of Texas basketball.
