Colonoscopy Talk

I had one last week on the five year plan.  They found one 3mm non-precancerous polyp and said to come back in 5 years.  5 years ago, they found one, precancerous 5mm polyp.  So this is an improvement.

The prep still sucks.  But putting a package of crystal light lemonade mix in the jug made it much more tolerable.  And a bidet is an absolute must.

Cologuard detect 90% of cancer.  So the good news is you save some money and miss the procedure - and the bad news is you’ll die of metastasized cancer of the 10% variety
Edit: did not see new doc before I posted.   I would also not do 10 years between colonoscopies nor would I wait till 50 to get my first one.    Like doc said, people get the cancer more frequently in earlier than they used to, so the standard of care as to frequency of procedure is probably off

The SOC changed from 50 to 45 without family history of cancer a few years ago. My doc told me about this change during treatment because I was dx’d at 40. So probably 2017-18-ish.

Get a colonoscopy. If you have any issues of upper GI issues get an upper at the same time. Dont be a pussy. Or an idiot. Find a gastroenterologist and schedule it.

My son is cursed with a poor genetic history with this cancer and it took me pushing his wife to push him to start at 35. He had some polyps and is on a 3 year plan.

I called an old friend a couple years ago I had lost touch with. He was not doing well as he was late stage IV colon cancer that had spread into his spine. He was starting a final Hail Mary trial which he knew he was a guinea pig for. And why was he dying? “I was scared of it; the whole thing. And there’s nothing to it so I feel like a fool. I won’t see my grandkids grow up.”

Think about that. See a gastro. Don’t shit in a box.

Starting my colonoscopy prep this morning for the procedure tomorrow. First timer.  I went ahead and scheduled an endoscopy at the same time. I’ve always had acid reflux and had an endoscopy 7 years ago and everything was fine. Just thinking 2 birds, one stone here.
Chicken broth and ensure clear for breakfast!  I take the bowl prep at 5 pm. 🤞

Do they put you out for an endoscopy?

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Endoscopy results looked good. Had two benign polyps removed during the colonoscopy portion. Everything looked fine.

Peed out of my butt for a few hours last night and again for a few hours this morning after the second round of bowel prep. Propofol had me sleeping like a baby during the procedure. Had a big lunch afterwards.

I’d almost do it again just for funsies!  46 years old. I’d encourage everyone to get the screening done earlier rather than later.

45 here and need to get one. My wife had hers recently due to family history and I drove her. Im sitting in the big recovery room waiting for her to wake up, surrounded by a cacophony of medical grade circus farts. I’m talking extended, ranging tonal triumphs. Symphonic. Makes me laugh every time I think about it.

Good for those scheduled.  There’s nothing to it.  You’re out.  Then you’re not.  There is no reason for many of the folks that die of colon cancer to die of it.  Early scoping and in line with any genetic predisposition and you’ll be fine.

Was there anything that prompted the endoscopy or was it preventative like the colonoscopy?

Just preventative. I have had acid reflux since my 20’s. I take omeprazole to control it and it does a great job. I had a preventative endoscopy 7 years ago and it was fine. I was due for my first preventative colonoscopy at 46. Even though my Dr didn’t recommend getting a second endoscopy this soon, I thought I might as well get it done anyway, since he would be doing the colonoscopy

Had my first colonoscopy at the end of last month (I'm 50, the pandemic caused my preventative medical care kind fall off). As a whole it was pretty easy.

I gotta say my meds / prep were a lot different than what I am reading here.

PREP - In terms of doing prep, they gave me a week of a low fiber diet (lot of white bread, white pasta, and chicken). It made the clean out pretty easy. It was all over the counter stuff a gallon of G2 and a months supply Miralax split in 2 doses 24 and 6 hours before the procedure.

Procedure - Fentanyl only. I didn't even sleep!!! Everyone promised me the best sleep of my life! I was awake the whole time!!! I got to watch on the video screen of the doctor cutting out my polyps. I did nap just a bit afterwards.

6 polyps - all benign. I got back in 3 years.

Get it done guys, even though I didn't get any great sleep, this was super easy.

Appreciate the heads up.. never heard of that... anyone booking one needs to clarify that they want and are getting propofol full sedation.

My dad had a colonoscopy at the beginning of the year. 7 polyps, all benign. His dumbass did drink coffee afterwards and it triggered some fucked up gall bladder/ gall stones issue and had to have emergency surgery to remove it. His gall bladder ended up bursting during the surgery and we all got pretty lucky that he’s still alive.

So get rid of your gall bladder the first second you can.

This didn’t age well. 3 catheters in like a month and the prostate cancer diagnosis today. I’ve done all the necessary google requirements to become an expert in it and can say this is much better than ass cancer.
