So I'll be seeing all my fellow Austin-based Rangers fans at the Creed show on November 15th, right? Right??

We can all hold hands and belt out "Arms Wide Open" one last time as a fitting farewell to the magical WS run and the championship reign.

No?

Fine. Maybe think it over.

As the MLB offseason officially begins and the Texas Rangers scramble to fill significant holes on their coaching staff, they will look to a familiar source for the talent: The San Francisco Giants.

The Rangers intend to hire Justin Viele, who has helped lead the Giants offense for the last five seasons, to replace Tim Hyers as the hitting coach, two people with knowledge of the process told The Dallas Morning News. The hire is pending typical background checks. Andy Baggarly of The Athletic first reported that Viele “appeared headed” to the Rangers.

The Rangers still need to replace Will Venable, who left his role as associate manager to take over the Chicago White Sox. It’s not clear exactly how Venable’s position will be filled or how the role will be described.

In Arlington, Viele, who turns 34 in two weeks, would reunite with Rangers offensive coordinator/bench coach Donnie Ecker. The duo worked together with the Giants from 2020-21 before Ecker joined the Rangers. It’s not the only Giants connection on the staff. Bruce Bochy had a notable stint as the Giants manager from 2007-19 and was an adviser for three seasons before coming to the Rangers.

Hyers left last week to take over as Atlanta’s hitting coach, a job that, on paper, seemed a lateral move, but did, in fact, give him oversight of the Braves’ offense and, perhaps more importantly, allowed him to move back to his suburban Atlanta home. While the Ecker-Hyers pairing was productive, it was an odd arrangement when it was created. Both were sitting hitting coaches at the time they joined the Rangers.

Viele and Ecker may have more traditional alignment in terms of philosophy and approach. They were part of a three-man hitting staff in San Francisco that saw a dramatic turnaround from their first season to their second in 2021. In Texas, the Rangers have also created a three-man hitting department. Seth Conner will remain as the assistant hitting coach.

Over the four years, Viele was part of the San Francisco staff, the Giants had a .723 OPS compared to .706 for the Rangers. Of particular note, the Giants walked more and saw more pitches per plate appearance. San Francisco has averaged 3.98 pitches per plate appearance the last five years, higher than the league average of 3.93. The Rangers’ average: 3.89.

Pitches per plate appearance can be a meaningless stat when measured for individuals, but, as a team, it can take on a much larger significance. A team that sees more pitches, particularly early in the game, has a tendency to wear starting pitchers out to get to the bullpen more quickly.

Alright boys my juju did not carry into 2024 when it came to thread-starting. However - the Bochy win-every-other-year juju may still be a thing? Should we power through this thing or does someone else want to take a stab at it?
