Even with all the injuries and underperformance the Astros are 35-22 since being 7-19. That's a 99.5 win pace over a full season.

The team that went 7-19 was relatively healthy. The team that went 35-22 was pretty banged up with lots of IL stints. Baseball is weird

Did they explain why they gave Abreu 8 days off. I’d imagine it’s a mental reset deal, but he doesn’t look right. I’m sure he’s not working through something physically, but maybe deleverage his appearances. Maybe give Scott the 7th.

He was at the top of the league in appearances

He ptiched 3 days in a row with the 1st game against Baltimore. Then the Astros really didn't need him for the rest of the home stand (5-1, 8-1, 5-2, 7-1) wins, even the 5-2 game it was 5-0 going into the 7th inning. Couple that with 2 off days sandwiching the Colorado series and not being needed the 1st 2 games against the Mets. Espada just doesn't have a good feel on when to use his high leverage guys, so Abreu has been over used and needed a break, just not 8 days.

You can always find guys that are FAs at the end of the year for cheap. A guy like Brandon Drury would not cost much and would be better than Singleton/Dubon.

I was reading today about the Verlander deal, and Gilbert has missed most of the season with a hamstring injury and Clifford can't make contact.

They will get an upgrade over Singleton.  May not be a major get but it’ll be a quality bat.  Loperfido, Arrighetti, Ullola, and Leon are significant trade chips they’ll be willing to part with for the right player.  Top 5 targets:

1. Vlad Jr.

2. Yandy Diaz

3. Jeimer Candelario

4. Lamont Wade Jr.

5. Tyler Soderstrom

I'd hate to see Ullola go. He's by far the most likely to not ever have a major league career- but he's also the arm I see in the minors most likely to be a TOR guy at some point in time.  I like Loperfido and Arrighetti both.  If Toronto wants to send us Vlad Jr., and takes back, say, Montero as a contract to make the money work I would swallow hard and do it but I'd have Ullola off the board.

Any of 2-5 they can take Loperfido or Leon and a couple other interesting guys and be good with it or not.

If you deal Arrighetti you damn sure better have JV and Garcia at a minimum come back. And that's putting some decent sized pressure on Bloss or the minors if you don't also get LMJ back- which seems sort of like a fools errand at this point in time- but who knows.

I saw an interesting idea for a 3-way deal today between us, Toronto, and Cleveland.

It would hurt a lot, as we would be losing Javier, Melton, Matthews, Barber, and Bloss

However, it would set us up as a favorite to return to #8.

Spoiler

Astros Receive: 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (from TOR), RHP Chris Bassitt (from TOR), OF Kevin Kiermaier (from TOR), LHP Parker Messick (from CLE)

Guardians Receive: SS Bo Bichette (from TOR), LHP Yusei Kikuchi (from TOR), C Danny Jansen (from TOR), OF Colin Barber (from HOU)

Blue Jays Receive: RHP Cristian Javier (from HOU), OF Chase DeLauter (CLE No. 1 prospect), OF Jacob Melton (HOU No. 1 prospect), SS Brice Matthews (HOU No. 3 prospect), RHP Daniel Espino (CLE No. 4 prospect), RHP Jake Bloss (HOU No. 5 prospect)

I think they can pull off another 17-8 month....16-9 at the worst.

Lets get it rolling by fucking up Canada Day for America's hat

While i agree they “can” I’m still so scarred by April and May that they’re going to have to prove it to me.

I’ll take some more “almost treading water”—and some interesting decisions at the trade deadline. And hope we blow the doors off in August.

Let’s go 14-11 for July

@TOR 2-2

@MIN 2-1

MIA 2-1

TEX 2-1

@SEA 1-2

@OAK 2-1

LAD 2-1

PIT 1-2

None of that can be real.

but when the delay happened I started to post “Altuve should just drive himself. I’m sure he’ll beat the team”.

….but of course, his sense of direction driving is about as good as his sense of direction running the bases.
