angels we can easily sweep, even in a 4 game series.

Mariners we can easily sweep, they are inventing new ways to lose

Indians: a sweep won’t be easy. But if we can pull it off, they only need to lose 2 out of the next 6.

so there it is! 10 game winning streak to end the season and Indians lose 2 of their next 6 before we sweep them.

Cant win 10 in a row to finish the season if you don’t win 2 first!

You for real? 3 innings in a playoff start?
Love JV but this isn’t the time to get sentimental . Leader of the staff? Good grief. Go Stros!

Right. 3 innings is what you ask when you’re in August and have 4 starters on the IL and you’re piecing together a bullpen game to turn over the rotation.

sadly he’s played himself in to the role of last pitcher you carry and bring in if you need a guy to eat innings in a lost game in the early part of a long series

Zero chance you leave him off. He is a leader for the staff.  He will give you three innings

he's also mostly sucked in the playoffs and he's sucking now. no reason to risk him blowing up early in a pivotal playoff game.

I was on a 5 or 6 game L streak last year, including an ALCS game. Final month of home games was brutal.

We need to start hitting some HR and XBH again. No dingers in the past 5 games and only something like 15 in our last 20.

Singles, easy flyouts, and strikeouts are getting kinda boring.

nate this year. Hoping to keep my recent streak of W's going tonight.

Welp, got what I asked for. Got the W. Got to see a bunch of XBH and HR.

Beyond all that, I was there to see the informal end of the career of one of the best pitchers in the history of the sport. 3 innings where he was everything he had ever been, and then he turned back into an injury-riddled 41 year old. IT got a bit dusty watching Old Man JV walk off to a standing ovation and tap his chest, knowing it was over.

What a fucking ride we've had with that guy since the late season trade in '17.

Andrew and I talked astros pitching in the postseason and this start was exactly what you wanted.
best option was JV dominant and ready for the postseason but absent that you wanted him to shit the bed so he’s unplayable as a starter. You didn’t want him to muddle through 5 or 6 and give up 2 or 3 while whit knuckling it and pronounce him fit and ready to go. This is for the best.
note- he might not be washed (probably is) as it’s possible this could still be injury related, but he’s definitely washed for this year.
I’d offer him something like 1/8 next year- with $2M incentives for 100, 125 and 150 IP, and like 10M in incentives for if he gets cy young votes. That could get him to 25M or something if he has a really good year, and if he’s bad you can cut bait and be out the price of less than a good 7th inning reliever on the open market. Seems reasonable. No idea if he’d be interested. I wouldn’t do more than that.

Disagree. If he can give you the same first 3 innings in the playoffs, it is worth it. We have no idea how young pitchers like spaghetti and others will preform in the playoffs.

1st long relief man out of the pen, split starter with Spaghetti etc.

If your goal is to win another banner, you aren't wasting a roster place on a starting pitcher you hope gives you 3 innings when you have 4 better options in Brown, Blanco, Valdez, and Kikuchi. Especially one that is now blaming returning to soon for his shitty results.

What if you move JV to the pen and let him replace Pressley as the 7 or 8th inning leverage reliever? Asking JV to get 3 outs is much more realistic than 15-18.

What is the love affair with 41 year old pitcher that fucking sucks right now, Verlander has never appeared in a MLB game as a reliever, and he'd probably be a distraction to the team as a whole by not being a starter. The much simplier solution is he doesn't belong on the roster.

Press has his issues, but what have you seen from JV this season to suggest this is remotely a good idea.

Do you really think he's a worse option for 1-2 innings vs Ort, King, Scott or Turd Ferguson? I think I would rather have him in the playoffs over any of those guys. He would have to accept the role though.

Being a bullpen guy is a lot different than a starter. I think he could give 100% for 1-2 innings rather than 80% trying to stretch for 5-6. Age and/or injuries have caught up with him, but he can still hit ~96 on his fastball. It's a completely different type of preparation for a game when you only need 3 outs, and I think he's smart enough and has the tools to adjust for it. If roster spots are in short supply, then maybe he gets the axe, but I would rather see him used in short stints over the other guys at the back of the pen.

Of those guys listed Scott probably gets some innings in the playoffs, but I don't trust Verlander at all right now, and anyone thinking a 41 year old that is likely still finding something in the pressure cooker of the playoffs is asking for trouble. Even before the injury, Verlander was showing signs of shitty pitching. His last 8 starts have been the worst stretch of his career, so why would you want that in a playoff game. All those guys you listed have performed better than Verlander this season, so while I would prefer sticking to the top 8-9 guys on the staff right now, I would take those 4 over Verlander 100%.

If Framber or Brown struggle you can have JV coming in early. The playoffs are different. Espada better have a short leash for everyone.

If those guys struggle you ain't going far in the playoffs anyway, and a 41 year old with a near 9.00 era in his last 8 starts isn't changing that.

ok so
the Astros' magic number as of yesterday, to win the division, is 4
Every other division leader has at least clinched a playoff spot
here's the funny thing
the magic number to clinch a wild card is SIX.
lololol

This division is so bad.

I kinda like the idea of JV in a piggy back role with Arrighetti or Blanco.  Don’t really need that until a 7-game series though.  Let him go out there and start a game knowing that he only needs to go 3 innings without keeping anything in the tank for multiple trips through a lineup.  I like him in that role better than other options.
