RIP Louis Gossett Jr

He was also great as George in A Raisin in the Sun, one of the most depressing plays you can watch. He was in the original Broadway production with Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee that was then adapted into a movie.

17 yo, landed a Broadway roll. A generational talent for sure

In 1953, Gossett acted in the Broadway play Take a Giant Step.[2] He replaced Bill Gunn as Spencer Scott.[3] The play was selected by The New York Timesdrama critics as one of the 10 best shows of the year. He was 17, and still a student at Abraham Lincoln High School, with no formal drama training.

RIP Gunny Sgt Foley. There's a pretty cool YouTube video out there from the 25th anniversary of O&G where he's walking around Fort Worden in Port Townsend where they shot the film. He's very chill & tells good stories of the making of the movie. As people do doubletakes when they recognize him he's just super polite, says hi & acknowledges them. Seemed like a great guy to hear stories over beers.

Also in 1961, Gossett appeared in the original cast of Jean Genet's The Blacks, the longest running off-Broadway play of the decade, running for 1,408 performances. The original cast also featured James Earl Jones, Roscoe Lee Browne, Cicely Tyson, Godfrey Cambridge, Maya Angelou and Charles Gordone.

that’s a hell of a run and cast !

His performance in this movie could be a masters class in the art of acting

also …

The kickboxing scene in an Officer and a Gentleman is just so fucking bizarre. It’s steaming along as a traditional romantic drama and… needle drop. Richard Gere is fighting his drill sergeant to the death.

Per IMDB and other 'making of' videos, Gere accidentally kicked Gossett during the filming and he walked off the set and refused to come back. Somehow the producers found another 6'2 black martial arts guy & got him on set the next day to finish shooting the scenes.
