Wait a minute ... Jackson Arnold is ine portal?  But I was assured that both he and Connor Weigman, who is also in the portal, were better than Arch Manning. Is that not true?

Don't get ahead of yourself, sip. Everyone knows that Arch is going to hit the portal, too.

If they target a starting QB in the portal, it's possible they lose all 3 of Weigman, Henderson, and Reed. That would be brutal.

Why?  None of them are good

I mean he's 29.  This kid was an OC at Seminole high school during COVID.   Sure, there is a chance this kid ends up being the real deal but it's a major fucking red flag OU (not UH or even Tech but OU) is taking a risk on this kid.  He has no real relationships for a "staff" at this point even if he wanted to bring some along (which apparently BV is not allowing anyways).  So he's stuck with a staff that was absolute shit this year, that are all significantly older and more experienced than he is, and who, to my knowledge, he has absolutely zero relationship with.   So sure, it could work, but it's not even close to a 'slam dunk' hire.   I have no doubt OU fans have convinced themselves they found the next Lincoln Riley but even Lincoln had 2 years as a position coach at Tech and 4 years at East Carolina before taking a big jump.  So yeah - good luck kid.

As someone who jumped up a lot of professional levels over the past four years, a 30 year old discovering their ability to lead from COVID on isn't weird. That said, Wazzu fans seem pretty ok with him leaving.

What do we take?

RB - only if the staff feels Baxter won't be ready? Or if they are looking to push Blue out to the portal?

WR - 1 if a super productive guy is there and they feel Golden is leaving for the NFL

DT - 3 have to replace the entire interior defensive line.

TE - 1 unless they feel confident Niblack and Jordan Washington can take huge steps.

CB - 1 if a Barron replacement is available

LB - 1

OL - maybe a guard if a surprise productive guy enters?

Now it certainly doesn't mean one guy can't be good, but Purdue this year was historically terrible as we all know. I have them as the 8th worst power conference team this century ahead of only a couple of Duke squads, a couple of Kansas squads, an Indiana team, and the infamous 2008 Apple Cup participants.

We need DTs to enter the portal with 2-3 years left.

Why? We are in a position to chase both depth and best available DTs in the portal. Best available will almost never have more than 1-2 years of eligibility and if we have the luxury of adding proven production as depth, why would we go outside of hs recruiting for developmental pieces? We're not loading up in hs, but we were in a similar spot last year and are currently allowing the fewest yards per play in the country.

Keep stashing developmental high school prospects, land the best available in the portal, and let the chaff sift itself out. Rinse, repeat.

It's not "discovering ability to lead".  It's that he has no fucking experience.    I reiterate.  He was a HS coach during COVID.   A resume for a young offensive coordinator that would make a little more sense looks something like:  (i) D1 player, (ii) GA at Power 4 program, (iii) Assistant at small school, (iv) position coach at Power 4 school, (v) OC at small school, (vi) OC at larger school.   And then it is still a leap to take over Oklahoma.    Again, people point to Lincoln but Lincoln had a significantly better resume when he took over OU AND he was 3 years older.  Again, this kid has never even stepped foot inside a power 4 facility as an employee until last week.

Success at this profession requires more than just basic X's and O's knowledge.  It's relationships with a staff that knows how to teach what you teach, ideally years of experience helping an OC formulate game plans against top tier defenses, reps upon reps as a play caller and not to mention things like knowing how to recruit on top of all of that.   Offensive coaches work their whole lives in this profession and 95%+ never reach the level of an OU offensive coordinator position.  So either Brent fucking Venables found a game planning/play calling savant that doesn't need any experience for immediate success or this kid is going to be learning on the job in a must win year. So good luck with that Sooners.

Uh yeah, Lincoln was a SA/GA/WR coach under Leach for 7 seasons.  He learned under the best.

I think I’ve mentioned it before but how we handle the RB room is going to be fascinating. If Blue comes back, you are going to have him, Wisner and Gibson all expecting to touch the ball fairly regularly in 2025 + Baxter coming off injury. Clark probably factors into the conversation more in 2026. Returning from an Achilles at that position feels like a long road. Then you have the 2 freshman who I would assume are headed for redshirts.

7 scholarship RB’s feels like a lot. You almost certainly are losing someone if you bring in a portal guy.

I am not predicting anything here, but OU hired a very HOT name in the biz.  Last year, this kid was on a private jet to interview with a P5 school in the Carolinas and received two calls from P5 schools while on the plane.

Has something changed regarding Blue? I’ve heard all year that, irrespective of this being the deepest pool of draftable TBs maybe ever, he’s entering the draft no matter what.

I think he will test well and go in the 5-7 rounds on those numbers alone. He's a 3rd down back in the NFL, and likely cut if his ball security issues continue.

I agree, but at the same time with so many injuries it also would be a good idea to yoink a good 1 yr rental for insurance.

It’s fun to track all the portal entries but in my opinion, based off what the 995ers and the staff have said about acknowledging the dwindling DL room, I get the feeling that the portal DL we are chasing aren’t going to be in this window, and they’ll be the type of player who everyone says “wtf, they’re transferring?” It feels more like shopping with a list rather than going into a store to see what’s available.

I imagine they'll want a speed guy if Blue leaves. If Baxter is healthy then it seems like him and Wisner would eat up the vast majority of the non-garbage time carries. Not sure where that leaves Gibson.

On tackle, took me a minute.  Well done.

On WR, im curious to see if we go for more than one *star* transfer.  Last year, we had zero proven returners.  Cook had 8 catches but hadn’t learned the offense or shown out well in practice.  Moore had shown out in practice but had multiple drops in garbage time.  Wingo was a talented 5 star, and ended up getting the most run with Moore.  We took 3 transfers.

This year, we have two proven returning guys (Wingo and Moore) that are both studs with complete games—talent, attitude, blocking. Beyond that, we have one guy the coaches like and want to include (Niblett), and two talented five stars (Lockett and Ffrench) who are both enrolling early.  For recruiting purposes, the coaches would likely give some snaps to the five stars unless they are just totally not ready.

With that in mind, would we have the snaps available to justify brining in two premier transfers? I can see us for sure taking a premier speed WR that would add a dynamic to the offense that no one brings (other than Wingo). But given what we have returning and the needs at DT, it would be tough to see us take the same approach as last year.

But after typing this out, Sark is getting spoiled with top end talent and I don’t know if he has the discipline to turn away proven offensive firepower that wants to come.

It’s going to take Baxter a while to get back close to what he was before so there will be plenty of opportunities for Gibson to start the year. I don’t think Simon redshirts either when you factor in injuries throughout the year.

I think Niblett would fill in there nicely if given a full offseason to prepare.

He tore it in early August, so I would think 13 months is plenty these days to recover from an ACL. /notadoctor

At WR, does Golden count as a "portal" addition? I'm sure they'd love to have him back, and will spend significant effort and resources to retain him.

Lots of moving parts at RB. I don't see why Blue would be back. I could see Gibson peacing out for a larger role somewhere. The sad fact is that we have no idea if Baxter will ever be the same or not. It will be interesting to see how that all plays out.

Gibson has to prove he can hold on to the football or everyone else will pass him on the depth chart.  I fully expect Wisner/Baxter to carry the bulk of the workload next year. It only gets interesting if Baxter is not better as soon as they like.

It's tough to see him as a draftable RB in this class right now. He will test well, but there will be a bunch of other RBs who also run a fast 40. I don't think he has played special teams in any of his 3 seasons here, so I don't think he will be viewed as a Keilan Robinson type. Robinson would probably go undrafted if he was in this class of RBs. Tough to make it as a Day 3 skill guy if you aren't contributing on special teams.

I think it would be a mistake for him to try to turn pro, but he hasn't exactly demonstrated the best decision-making dating back to high school. Hopefully, he has good people in his corner and is willing to listen.

I think it’s best for all parties if Blue enters the draft. He will test well, and some team is going to get a great weapon out of the backfield.

Losing productive players to the draft is healthy for a program. It keeps the talent pipeline flowing. We need Gibson next year, and hopefully Baxter is able to contribute a lot also.

Plenty of guys come back within 9 months of an ACL injury and play like nothing happened. It's a truly individual issue, so no one knows shit right now, but it's more likely that he's ready in the summer than not able to workout in the fall, given history of others with the same issue. This isn't the 1970's.

My only concern is it wasn't just his ACL but his LCL as well and judging from early reports they initially thought it was all 3 although the PCL didn't require surgery but could have still been damaged.

FWIW to those who weren't there, Golden did not walk on SR night. I am unsure of the rules and such, so maybe he couldn't simply because he's not going to graduate any time soon or something, but that's likely not the case. I took it as an indicator that he wants to come back. I think the dude is a terrific college WR, so I would love to see that. He catches everything, plays tough, runs solid routes, has a workmanlike attitude within the program, is helpful on kick returns, etc. It would be great news if he returns.

Damn good in the red zone... would love another year of Golden at Texas  🤘

I know it's early, but I just went through two sites, including PFF, regarding RBs for the 2025 draft.

1) Holy shit this is a deep class.

2) Jaydon Blue wasn't listed on either site. Both sites had 30 or more TBs graded.

This dude might not even get invited to the combine.

Based on my limited conversations with his family at the Cotton Bowl, he's one and done at Texas. They were pissed with the lack of targets, but he's been our only reliable and healthy WR over the back half of the season. NIL can change minds, but right now I would say he's moving on to the NFL.

He’s hot because he learned Air Raid under a guy who learned under Kingsbury. While I love how that offense puts pounds of points on the board against average and bad teams, it’s an offense that still has yet to prove it can win a championship in the last several years.

It also isn’t beating great teams. The shine is off a bit on Riley and other air raid coaches when it comes to beating top ten teams. OU is trying to relive the glory days of Leach’s offense. It will make them better for sure, but it won’t win them championships.

He’s been a steady producer on the college level in multiple deep receiver rooms. He’s should test decently well and get high remarks from trusted offensive minds.

He’s a day 2 early day 3 guy if he continues to make plays down the stretch as the stage gets bigger.

Honest question - what is going on with the fumbles in the RB room? Is it really that hard to hold onto the football? It doesn't seem like other schools have this problem, but maybe I haven't been paying attention?

I know that "hit the ball" is being taught more and more as a standard part of tackling, but that's hardly novel and you would think the coaching / players would have adjusted at this point.
