Taaffe tackles extremely well, plays the ball well in the air, catches it whenever he has a chance to (no Gideon), and is seemingly in the right place all the time. He has turned himself into a real asset. It would be great to have him back next year.

I agree. Nothing you wrote is in conflict with the post you quoted. It’s also something that wasn’t written about him during or after ‘22 or ‘23 because it would have been rightly mocked for inaccuracy. He’s made considerable gains this year and will likely be a mid-late round pick.

One additional note from Gerry:

I did confirm that a Texas message board poster that goes by Helobious is indeed on campus as well. He's been given free rein by the staff to hang around the facilities and it's possible he is sleeping there overnight as well. Not sure what his exact duties are but my source saw multiple members of the athletic training staff treating and icing down both of his forearms last night. Something to monitor.

Did he use the term “heavy handed”?

I'm not disagreeing. No one who saw him in 2022 or even in '23 thought, "that's an NFL player," but that's exactly what he's looked like this year.

They expect him to leave?

Do you know if the staff is working to retain him or if they're comfortable with him going to the draft based on the DB's we have in the wings?

So they're the reason why I have to add tons of hot sauce to the cream cheese filling in my home made jalapeno poppers.  🖕

He walked on SR Night. He’s certainly an exit possibility.

I don’t know anything specific. It’s a given that if a guy hasn’t hit the portal, Texas is doing what it can to retain the player. They do the same with those who are late round and UFA NFL grades.

To that end, what kind of feedback is Cam Williams getting? I know he rocketed up boards early in the season but I also saw he was the most penalized player in CFB (just double checked and I can't find the article any longer). Curious if that gives any pause to him declaring.

I have no idea but I don’t think anyone expects that dude back.

Hayden Conner is also much improved.

Let's not go fucking nuts here. Hayden Connor is much improved as long as you don’t ask him to run block anyone worth a shit. I bet he’s still wincing from the rhythmic shit pushing he recorded for 60 minutes against Georgia.  Both times.

I don’t know about Taaffe, but a general observation about the program right now:

-whatever “development” is (S&C, focused coaching, intensive drills), it is happening at UT like we have not seen for decades, if ever. Players know that they will develop here, and it helps recruit.
-the work that goes into “development” is hard enough that as soon as a player sees an opportunity for greater pay in the NFL, they are gone. As soon as they see they are not going to play, they are gone.

Both can be true (as they were at Saban’s Alabama)- there is no better place to be developed as a player than Texas, and the work is too damned hard to do for free or reduced pay. The days of draft-eligible players returning are over, unless they can be convinced that a return would, at low risk, dramatically improve their draft position.

If Taffee comes back and has a similar year he could maybe see an all-American and consideration for the Thorpe type year!
not to mention a high draft grade imo, dude has done nothing but ball.

The big question mark is around … the numbers. How does he test? It looks as if he’s come a long way. If the physical stuff is above average, it probably really impacts his status. If not, he’s drafted as a football player in the later rounds irrespective of when he comes out.

Wow.  They’re just going to pay this dude a crazy amount to sit behind Nuss?

Make it make sense. LSU is so fucking broke they need their HC to contribute to their NIL Fund, and they can swing high 6 figures for Van Buren to hold a clipboard for a year.

This shit sucks.  Especially in the last 4-5 years or so it seems HEB suppliers went to these aggie jalapeños, it’s almost impossible to find a spicy one these days. You ruin jalapeños, overtime in college football, what’s next?

I dunno maybe I got one of the non aggy ones but I made some poppers for the army navy game and the one I got had a whole Mexican in it. Fucking thing tried to kill me.

If he’s smart he goes to the league. There is no possible way he can improve his stock and enough between this draft and next considering how high it is now. He’s not going to magically be a 1st or 2nd rounder. He definitely has made himself a mid to late rounder though, depending on combine testing.

PSA: I just had some homemade nachos with Las Costeñas pickled jalapeños and they were appropriately spicy.

Apparently the Aggyfication of jalapeños hasn’t been accepted in Mexico

Also, the smaller the jalapeno, the spicier it is, generally speaking.

At least, that's what the professional produce shelf putter-upper at H.E.B. told me.

Didn't BK offer up a million as well? I still think they are tier 2 land rumor is that their final full 3-4 year deal for Underwood was 6 million. Michigan simply just doubled them.

So, Kelly putting $1M of his own salary towards NIL.... is that really him or is it LSU telling him he's gonna take a reduction in salary but he can make it look like he's "donating" the money?

I’m not sure as to if he’s being made to do it or not, but it certainly begs a legality question, no? That’s just funneling university funds into their general NIL fund isn’t it? Or is that legal now. I can’t keep up.

Pretty sure both (coach and uni paying into NIL) are illegal right now, but with lawsuit ongoing, I think most players and schools are taking the stance that nothing really matters.

Is this true? Mid/late rounders with eligibility have been coming back as often as usual imo. C Jones, Sweat, Ford, Jwhit, Collins, Barron, Ewers, etc. Which mid/late rounders have left early?

Obviously 1st/2nd rounders leave early but that's always the case.

You have listed a lot of guys that improved (or intended to improve) their draft position by returning. Which was what I said.

Before 2023, Whittington was an UFA at best. Fans were still hoping Jones would be replaced at Tackle. Barron came back to play CB, not Star. Sweat would have been drafted mid rounds, at best, before 2023, in potential.

True but as of today is he even drafted? So maybe coming back makes more sense, not just him but Moore also who may be a late rounder at this point but seems to me he’s gotten better as the year has gone on making me think he’s gotten use to the speed and another year could jump into  2-3 round maybe . I know his measurable aren’t the best but numbers will make anyone look.

A few questions for those more in know:

1. Is the Purdue DT another Trill Carter or is he a more complete prospect?  IIRC Carter was a multi-year starter, maybe even 2nd team all BIG at one point...is the Purdue kid seen as a better prospect?  The DT transfers-in this year have been solid for the most part.

2. Same question for the UCF DT

2. What's the feeling on Trey Moore?  Returning or Draft?  Would love to have him back.  Dont recall if he walked on SR. night.

3. Are the Texas players Texas  that portaled staying on the team through the end of the season, but are making it  known now they will be leaving?  Of all the guys, I know not many play a ton...just thinking about practice depth, late game subs (especially at DT) in the fortunate event we are up big and can rest guys (would obviously be a complete luxury to have that problem)

4. Havent heard of any RB transfer portal visits...my feeling is we need a back, given Blue's status as a portal risk/fumble issues, Baxter/Clark injuries, unproven depth, can Gibson be the guy etc... after DT, this need is most glaring imo

He's gone. He's getting a first round or at worst 2nd round grade. His measurables are exactly what the NFL looks for. They don't care about the penalties at this stage because he's raw with only this year of starting experience. He's a lot like Tyler Smith who the Cowboys took out of Tulsa. Raw but with the physical tools, and was the most penalized lineman in the country his last year in college. He's been one of the better guards in the NFL the last couple of seasons.

I'm not sure how much more of a ceiling he has. It might not make sense from a development standpoint for him to return. But it could make sense from a financial standpoint if he can get more out of NIL here that he'd get with a back of the draft/UDFA draft grade. All depends on what that draft grade is.
