Transfer Cycle 2024-2025 - A Panoply of Dipshits, Running Amok

The money makes this shit interesting anyway. Why not, if they'll give him 1.5 and some treated lumber?

Guess it depends on his draft grade. If it’s after day two then yeah he should go get paid somewhere for a year and work on that.

(Eric Nahlin) Day 1 Portal Stream of Consci_ _sness: Helpful Reminders

Quote

After one full day of the NCAA Transfer Portal being opened I wanted to share some thoughts.

Evaluation mode

As stated, the Texas staff is in evaluation mode during the early part of this week. They’re trying to make up for lost time after having to focus primarily on NSD and the SEC Championship. Right now they’re collecting names, pouring over tape, and running background checks to their best capabilities. Do not worry about Texas not being mentioned for a visit five minutes after a player has entered the portal.

With very few exceptions, even a player as talented as Eric Singleton will be carefully examined from all angles. The Georgia Tech receiver entered yesterday and immediately had visits set up to Georgia, Ole Miss, and Auburn per Max Olson. The portal doesn’t close until December 28. There is plenty of time for Texas to collect data and then make its move.

Data like, what would it cost to land Singleton. Let him go get his best offer and if he wants to shop it he’ll shop it. I wonder if the staff will take a similar approach to the Justus Terry recruitment. Rather than “strike first, strike hard, no mercy,” maybe they’ll want to strike last.

Agents make things easier and more difficult

Portal recruiting has evolved in recent years with the proliferation of agents. In the first couple years it was incumbent on coaches to have a previous relationship with a player entering the portal. At minimum, coaches needed an ‘in’ with somebody near and dear to the player. Now agents make it much easier to get on the player’s radar but ultimately make it more difficult to land the player due to exerting leverage.

Recall Damonic Williams’ recruitment where he was essentially shopped to a handful of schools. Texas is attractive to players at nearly every position on the roster. Texas also has a fantastic reputation for fulfilling its obligations. This motivates agents to be proactive to reach out to Texas. Contact is often a two-way street, it’s not just the coaches reaching out.

Coaches always have something up their sleeve

We know Texas has interest in Singleton but if the staff doesn’t pursue it means one of two things: they’ve caught wind of somebody better entering the portal or the price of doing business was too expensive. In the last couple years Texas has landed players it expected in advance would enter the portal. There were also a couple of times where the player didn’t enter. Barion Brown being an example. A couple others went pro instead of entering the portal.

If Texas isn’t in it for a player there’s a very good reason

We won’t always know that reason is but rest assured they have one. Unlike high school recruiting, there aren’t a lot of unknown athletes falling through the cracks. A player enters the portal, more often than not it’s announced publicly, and coaches across the country take a look at the film and either pursue or don’t. A number of things could keep Texas from pushing.

They want players who fit the NFL type from a size, speed, and physical standpoint. At times, that will cross some good college players off the board. Sometimes the player is lazy or unreliable and crosses himself off the list. You get the picture. Your default assumption when they pass should be they have a good reason for it.

EVERYBODY needs defensive tackles

One position where schools might utilize a sliding scale is defensive tackle. The need is simply too great due to scarcity. Texas, like pretty much every other school, including other blue bloods, has a tremendous need for defensive tackles in this cycle. Landing Jaheim Oatis from Alabama and two Jermayne Lole types would be a massive win for the Horns during this window. That’s about as high as my expectations can get and those are probably too high.

This one makes a lot of sense

Hometown kid? Check. Need position? Check. Volume back with good speed? Check. Good enough hands? Check. USC running back Quinten Joyner broke a lot of hearts when he entered the portal but when you look at his usage you can’t blame him. Despite averaging 7.6 yards per carry he only logged 63 carries this past year. His highest volume game was against Notre Dame when he ran it 10 times for 83 yards.

Joyner has a thicker build but isn’t necessarily a power back like his former high school teammate at Manor, Tahj Brooks. He can break tackles and does have good speed and playmaking ability. I saw some mention preferring a one-year rental out of the portal but I’m indifferent on that. Throw bodies at the problem, keep the best ones. A 2025 running back room off Joyner, Blue, and Wisner looks a lot better than the current one.

Factor in CJ Baxter, hopefully, and Jerrick Gibson in his second year and health is restored to the room. I don’t think Joyner is as good as the running back that has been contemplating entering the portal but there’s no guarantee that player will go in.

The board is so much better about not falling for bait

With one exception: troll accounts. Trevor Etienne entered the portal last week. Ryan Williams and Bryce Anderson entered yesterday. You guys. Read the Twitter handle, please. @azzntittays isn’t breaking portal news. We’re at least five years away from that. Other than that, you guys have mostly caught on to the engagement techniques deployed by the portal news breakers. If the player hasn’t done anything in college, they’ll revert to his high school ranking. Sometimes they’ll use his compiled stats over three years to look like one. Etc.

A lot of freshmen entering the portal

It’s becoming pretty obvious which kids picked schools strictly for money rather than the right reasons. To be clear, money can be one of the right reasons but if it’s the driving force you’re running a poor process and unlikely to be happy at the school you picked. If you pick a school because you like the coaches, players, campus culture, town, academic track, etc., you’re far less likely to give up after one year.

Maalik Murphy departs Duke

I’m very curious to see how this plays out for Murphy. He seemingly was a great fit at Duke and with former Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. His first season had its peaks and valleys but he delivered pretty well statistically and in the win column. What’s the process here? Is he looking for a cash grab? Does he already know where he’s going? He made a thoughtful decision to commit to Texas and Steve Sarkisian. I hope he put as much thought to this decision.

Belicheck to UNC. Better move fast if they are going to get active in the portal

Mack was overheard shouting: "Someone call Joe Jamail! Call Joe! Nick, I mean Bill is not going to win the NC with my players!!!"

All of their "injured" WR are probably gone. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but they probably don't like their position coaches/S&C guys. The coaches that Venables forced his new OC to keep so that they could keep a mediocre recruiting class together.

An absolute masterstroke, Mr. Venables! GENIUS!

IT said we’ve reached out to this guy. FCS defensive player of the year and his dad is a trainer in the Dallas area who has worked with current and former Texas players.

Didn't we have a guy like this before? Ducker Diamond Dorsey?

Jagger JJ Hester (WR) has entered the portal at OU. The mods on their 247 board are warning that Gibson (ACL) and Burks (spine, or lack thereof) could be in the portal shortly. That would leave them with Brenan Thompson, Andrel Anthony, and freshmen, I think. Something is clearly wrong in the WR room and with the S&C/medical staff.

Doesn't he play WR for USC and doesn't he prefer to play that position?

Correct. He was projected as a TE out of HS, has gained zero pounds since arriving at USC, because he thinks he's a WR. He can get fucked and stay fucked, the reason he chose Riley and USC is now obvious.

I'm wrong a lot with stuff that seems obvious to me, so it's nice to get confirmation on the thought that Venables was one of the most obvious busts in recent coaching history.

That's exactly 20% of an 85 man roster.

Lol
