I know everyone wants a WR, but does Sark?  I feel like he's been burnt a few times with getting guys in who struggle to understand the offense.  Maybe better to develop guys within the system who have multiple offseasons to learn and master the offense?

Even Golden took a while to come on because he struggled to understand the offense and had to put in the face to face work with Sark.

For every AD Mitchell, you get first half of 2024 Golden, Bond, Hall, etc.

Expand

I would take the first half of the 2024 for Bond any and every day.

I’m hopeful for Shannon as well.  He’s bigger than Helm and I’d like to see if he can be that second, blocking-oriented TE to complement Washington. Hopefully the staff can figure out if he’s up to that job during spring practice.

Expand

The entire recruitment of Shannon was that of "come in, we'll develop you into a starter if you show patience, we are going to need an in-line blocker". He was lowly regarded, but we talked about his potential value in that context on this site. We know they can develop guys, so hopefully we get to see that from him this season. We need to see that. As basically the second to last guy taken in a great class, getting value out of Shannon would be major bonus money, similar to Helm.

E Winston is another guy who was lowly regarded during this past cycle, since we're thinking about lowly rated TEs for a second. I couldn't get a positive thought for the guy from others except the throwaway line offered regularly of "Banks must see something". He's got great hands and seeks contact. He's just 6'1 but weighs like 240. It would be cool if they actually used him in some H-back or Fullback scheming, but that's likely just fan fiction on my part. If they don't, though, I don't know why in the hell they recruited the guy.  All of the recruiting write-ups on him basically said that he could be an outstanding weapon for the right scheme, wherever that is, because of his twitch, ball skills, and general anger on the field.

Cackling to myself how horrible Niblack must be if he was on the bench during the non stop Juan Davis show down the stretch

Expand

I don't think it means he's horrible. I just think he was a very bad fit for this team with a completely immobile QB.

It's very difficult to play TEs who can't block when you have an immobile QB. You just can't run out of that set worth a shit as the defense will be able to overwhelm you up front with only 6 in a lot of cases. The QB's threat of mobility needs to be able to take one end out of the equation in the run game in order to allow the offense to run with a TE that can't block.

He had a solid season in '23 for Alabama with a running QB who could throw deep accurately. He needs to go to a team with a mobile QB for next season. Ewers was just a terrible QB pairing for Niblack

It was at the beginning of the season? Maybe he didn't feel right to take your money if he pretty much knew at that point he wasn't going to play much.

I think the fact he stayed out of the portal through the entire playoff run shows he's a team guy and has at least some level of integrity. He could have just told you, but probably didn't want to be telling people he didn't think he'd play.

So seems like biggest spring portal wants are DT, K, TE, WR imo. WR or TE would've been nice to have for spring practice but oh well. And maybe shore up the OL or secondary opportunistically.

I feel like spring portal could get wild depending on all this regulatory stuff with Title IX and the House Settlement. If schools have been making deals with the expectation of revenue sharing budget and that number gets lowered or delayed by the gov't, there could be chaos due to unfulfilled promises. Who knows what will happen though..

I'm very surprised he didn't get the call on the 2nd down that was the worst playcall in history though, I really was expecting that to be a Juan is unaccounted for easy curl into the ez play or even a Juan power run formation.

This absolutely does. The combination of a QB who is immobile and can't throw deep limits the offense in ways you have no idea about. One of them is personnel. If the QB can't account for one of the ends in the running game you have to have a blocking TE in the game to even the numbers. You can go 12 personnel but then you're taking off a receiver for a receiving TE which doesn't make much sense unless you can catch the other team in a heavy set with 3 LBs. Almost never happens if they know your receiving TE can't block well. They'll match personnel with him with a corner or safety.

Arch is the QB next season so in this fantasy scenario it shouldn’t matter regardless. Davis and Helm routinely whiffed on blocks and miraculously found a way to see the field.

Safeties will have to play deeper instead of cheating to stop the run. Linebackers will have to get closer to account for Arch
