Transfer Cycle 2024-2025 - Helobious Is Giving Out Handjobs For DTs

A good addition based on on what? Him sucking out plaid and not even being draftable at this point? Like bear Alexander, he’s gotten worse every year except safety isn’t DT.

Even talk to text is more creative than 95% of this board. Sucking out plaid is terrific. It’s like working in hydraulics.

100%. The eye test may have told a different story at times, but someone is going to see 3000 yards, 26/12 ratio, leading Duke to a 9-3 record, and great physical tools in a RS-Sophomore and feel like that's something they can absolutely work with. People underestimate how many truly shitty QBs there are out there. Maalik has shown that he's already in, what, the top 25% of FBS QBs? Maybe higher?

He either was straight up tampered with by someone, or at minimum was hearing heavily from programs and NIL agents. He's going to do well. And honestly, good for him. Sucks for Duke but that's just the way of the world now. I'm definitely still rooting for the guy.

My friend who's a pretty hooked in Duke fan said there's a real sourceoff - some are saying boosters missed a payment, some are saying he wasn't taking his classes seriously and wasn't going to get a degree next year, so he decided to go somewhere where he could get a bag and graduate on schedule.

I'm curious about the order of events. Did he schedule a trip because Murphy entered the portal or did Murphy enter the portal because Duke was looking around?

There has to be more to the Maalik story.  I can't figure out why he'd want to leave when Duke gives him as good a shot as anywhere to make it to the league, plus a damn good degree if he doesn't.

He doesn't strike me as the type to just chase a few more NIL $s.

Sounds like some alum skipped classes at the Fuqua School

This going to have to help dampen NIL enthusiasm at Missouri. This guy was paid a fortune to go there and he did jack shit, pouted, and left.

I keep finding this kind of thing curious.  Missouri presumably gave him a big commitment last year.  He’s also a local-why is there such a quick divorce?

The guy put up some stats in one game - against UMass. They weren't super impressed with how he handled himself in the locker room or offseason, supposedly. He thinks he should have been starting because ... 5 star. So he'll go get a bag somewhere else. I assume OU would like another shot with him. Or maybe that is just me hoping for more comedy.

What you hit on is the evolving nature of NCAA football free agency and presumably it comes to mirror pro sports.  At some point the teams will wise up and figure out the template of what works (i.e., proportionally the money needs to go to who can play early or can offer additional value, like a back-up QB willing to sit for a couple of years in the right circumstance).  In the interim, a Yankees like ability to eat bad deals seems more valuable than smart deployment of money because there's too many parties (Aggie/Missouri) willing to be dumb with money.

For some reason, Rivals is probably the best service at the data aggregation side of Portal coverage.

In today's roundup, nothing relevant to us, but A&M gets a couple mentions:

After it didn’t work out at Texas Tech after one season, the five-star receiver was at Texas A&M on Monday and if all goes well the Aggies could be loading up majorly at wide receiver through the portal. Hudson is definitely one to watch as the Aggies were involved late in his high school recruitment.

Another frequent flyer. I seem to remember him being a kid from a good, stable background but having drug / mental health issues at UGA.

Recruiting ranking pedigree is something else. This guy has been a bum everywhere he's been. Totally irrelevant to any serious program.

It’s always a red flag when a player who’s been in college multiple years has the blurb writers reference their HS ranking rather than actual college production.

Third-year sophomore transfer Josiah Fletcher's mom says he was always the strongest boy at the family reunion.

"He would finish his food faster than all of them and then go play for hours! Such a good boy!"

A&M Coach Mike Elko thinks Fletcher will be a key piece in a championship run in 2025! WHOOP!

Elko would neve recruit a player who gets to the post-game buffet before he does.

In defense of Castellanos, Coach Chin Pussy can ruin anyone on offense. He also took last year’s leading rusher at the QB position and tried to run a pro style offense. Castellanos can be good in the right offense. But I doubt that is FSU.

FSU Update:

-Bidding in big to win Thomas Castellanos (BC) after he was moved to 2nd team in Boston and then quit, midseason. After DJU, this seems smart.

-14 transfers out, so far. They're expecting others. One guy they're losing is the highly rated QB that they were keeping on the bench and grooming. Smart work.

-3 guys have declared for the NFL.

They signed 20 guys in a recruiting class ranked 20th. Their roster is decimated and they're hoping to arbitrage the portal again, even after this past season's utter failure on that front. These guys might be really bad for a while.

Is there a school with money that hasn't historically been a major player that has the ability and interest to take advantage of the changing landscape and become somewhat of a regular contender?

What do you mean by historically a major player? Because the current #1 team in the country checks a lot of those boxes and isn't a blue blood by any means.

Yeah, actually fits well with what Gus likes to run.

Seems like with this new portal & NIL system, roster management & retention is a bigger deal more than ever.  It would probably take years if you had as much roster turnover as FSU, OU, & A&M.  Those and others seem to looking forward to substantial rebuilds.  Places like LSU that don't have the cash to keep up with the Joneses might do better with a more developmental conservative approach than star-chasing.
