Transfer Cycle 2024-2025 - JFC

I really hope we can find/have someone better than Hutson. From what we’ve seen of him he’s a reliable backup who can play 3 positions along the interior but has a ceiling of Majors/Conner ability. We have to get more physical and nasty in the interior.

Barron may be the hardest loss to replace. That guy will go in the pantheon at DBU.

Hoping based on recruiting profile that Derek Williams has a breakout year next season if he can stay healthy, and lessens the loss of Makuba.

Some of y’all are assuming that a dumbass like Bond can’t be replaced by Lockett or Ffrench. And some of y’all think that Livingston can only sing and dance.

I’m not sure what everyone’s obsession is with transfer WR.
teams like Clemson and Ohio State, hell even BloU have proven Freshman WR can come in year one and be the best players on the field.
I would love a speed guy but I think our WR room will be in good shape. Wingo, Moore, Butler, French, Lockett, Livingston and don’t forget about Niblett. Maybe get one transfer speed guy but I like our WR room.

Decent chance we are better next year than this year.
Lb should be better by virtue of getting older. Edge should be better for the same reason. DT a step back but not as much as everyone thinks. If Taaffe comes back and Williams is healthy we will have 4 guys at safety that will be really good.  Guilbeuaux a year older and in his contract year. I think Manny will be fine to really good. Maybe he takes a step and is elite. I’d like to see a couple corners come in the portal but they might already be on campus.
If Terry had a Simmons like freshman season things get really interesting.
Also, I expect every team on our schedule to be more or less dogshit offensively next year except maybe Florida, so… the defense will be elite level fine in all likelihood. Like, top 5 defense again by the numbers in the game.
Really only spot we are glaringly lacking that absolutely needs to be filled in the portal in my opinion is WR1. We need a stud.

Maybe I’m different but I hope we don’t pencil Gilbeau in as the starter, I hope they let him and Wardell Mack battle it out.
Gilbeau for a three year letterman was a liability

Overall agree, but I think we’ll be noticeably worse at the beginning of the season. Replacing 4/5 offensive line starters, including a generational left tackle, is no joke. Losing Barron and Mukuba from the secondary is brutal; I expect that unit to take a big step back.

The great thing is that our schedule is very manageable yet again. On paper, trips to Columbus, Athens and Gainesville should be the only real challenges. Plenty of room to have growing pains yet still win. Go 1-2 in those games and you are in the playoffs, and it’s all about getting hot at the right time.

Ohio State might be losing everyone so that trip won’t seem as bad as it looks right now. They still have Smith though so thats is that. And going into that game Texas and Ohio State are probably 1&2 in the country no lower than 4.

I’m not as scared of UGA then I am of a team like Florida. Stockton has to improve but they are getting better around him. Florida will be better so there’s that.

Because relying on that is a great way to underperform.  Imagine a WR room this year without Golden and there’s probably another couple of losses.

Plus, the one thing most freshman WR fail to do adequately is block worth a shit, and that appears to be a necessity in Sark’s offense given how how much they run screen plays.

A freshman WR can be good but that is an exception for rare talents like Smith, Ryan Williams, etc. Imo you should almost never be counting on a true freshman to be a difference maker at any position. It's just a big gamble. As a coach, would you really want to roll the dice on the Arch era by counting on a WR who's never played a college snap? Especially when the other two sure-fire starters are young and somewhat unproven themselves.

And then you have to consider the possibility of injuries. If Wingo or Moore go down, that room is extremely green.

I'm not saying we need 3 transfers (I thought that was overkill last year) but I do think 1 proven starter would be prudent assuming Bond and Golden leave, which appears to be the case.

This can be true but so can the other. Like I said you don’t know unless they’re out there. Wingo didn’t play like Smith or Williams did at Bama, how much better is he if he got the snaps they got?

not saying we shouldn’t have gotten Golden but if it’s not a WR like him in the portal I don’t see the point of pushing the issue.

I agree with this, 1 is cool, but you have people talking about take 2-3 and I just feel like that can do more harm than good

It's a balance for sure. If you take too many, the young guys won't get enough reps to develop, so then you can get into a cycle of portal reliance at a position. Sorta like DT right now (although that was probably more of a HS recruiting issue). On the other hand, again, you don't want to be dependent on a true freshman immediately stepping in, or even someone like Butler/Livingstone who hasn't faced live fire in college and who must not be good enough yet to get snaps (you never know how fast they'll develop).

So yeah, 1 or 2 would be the smart move imo and that still give you plenty of reps for the youngsters. If a youngster breaks through, then awesome, there's a good chance you'll need them anyway with injuries.

I wonder if Wingo is frustrated and bolts. He’s a stud but Ewers rarely seemed to look his way.

The fuck? Arch and Wingo have the best chemistry on the field.

I know the rumint bond isn’t wanted back. But wouldn’t he be WR1 if he returned?  Was that is issue?  He’s a talent I’m not sure if he’s a head case and got butt hurt after the injury or what his deal is. But early on we had another worthy mitchell combo with golden and bond. Surely he Wingo and the freshman studs would make a lethal combo along with Moore back

is there any potentials out there or future predictions for another golden

According to Bobby and Gerry, Bond will probably not be back, and it isn't to enter the draft. They said subtly that he doesn't hang out with any players on the team and even when walking through it's like he's going through the motions. They basically said he ain't coming back because Sark is cutting him loose.

While what you say is generally true, neither of Bond and Golden blocked worth a shit. Gunner left a lot to be desired in that regard too. Otherwise, though, they were  solid receiving production. I'm optimistic Wingo will be a more complete WR for us. He was underutilized this season. That probably changes with Arch and another off-season of development.

Wingo, like you said, busted his ass. Dude was a great blocker, and I expect him to even better with Arch distributing the ball around, but Wingo will be his guy.

When is the day for Texas players to announce portal entry?  Is it the same for Penn State or do they go a day earlier?

I believe it's five days after elimination, but I didn't know if that clock starts Friday and includes weekends or starts Saturday or starts Monday?

January 15th. Same day as the NFL draft entry deadline too I believe.

I think you are really underselling Mukuba. He was nails all year long, and the few times Williams has actually been healthy he’s not been near that impactful IMO. Big offseason for him

Early in the season, I thought he was a liability in coverage. He dialed in nicely though and, as you say, was nails from then on. I'm hopeful Jelani McDonald takes the next step. He's been fantastic downhill. Hope he and Williams push each other.

The takes on Florida around here have ranged all the way from, "I don't mind losing recruits to Florida because they aren't a threat" to "Florida is scarier than Georgia." It's something.

I could be misremembering, but I thought the post re Florida was more "we dont recruit against them" so they aren't a threat.  I could be wrong and when the post was made, they were a dumpster fire. So you could correct

He needs to learn to play through contact when the ball is in the air. Once he does that, he is going to be a monster.

I think we're only going to lose three. A line of Goosby - USC portal dude or Neto - Hutson - Campbell - Williams will be fine and might actually look like an improvement due to, ah, certain improvements at other positions.

Is Hutson a shoo-in for center? Neither he nor Neto inspire confidence. If I recall Connor Robertson and Daniel Cruz are the other names I've heard associated with playing center, but obviously fewer snaps and less time incubating. At guard wondering if Connor Stroh or Andre Cojoe will make their presence known.

Other side of the ball, I'm cautiously optimistic about our two DT portal additions. Lole and Norton were better than expected and hoping part of that was due to Baker's coaching. One or two more from the spring window would be nice.

That’s valid, but I think a greater area of improvement is that someone with his physical attributes should be open more and that’s going to come with experience.

He’s been open plenty but the quarterback has to get him the ball. If he he behind the deepest defender and ball is under thrown then how is that on Wingo?

I think some over sell Williams based on what we've seen so far as well.

He had a terrible game against OSU but wasn't healthy.  He played fantastic at times this past year though.   If he actually comes back will have extremely high expectations for him next season.
