Elite defenses are hard to replicate. This year everything came together for once in the secondary and the line. It’s been a long long time since we’re DBU we need another makuba bad. Another Thorpe at the corner. Simmons will set records. Beef in the middle. Hill we have for one more year   I hope we go hard in the portal back to back years in the semis one play from a national title game. We gotta put it together in 25

This defense was so goddamn fun to watch this year. Just incredible for a college team to be that consistently good, especially with an offense that seemed like the only thing it could do consistently is put the defense in bad positions.

People need to be ready for a step back next year; I'm not saying that means we won't be good or anything but there's basically nowhere else to go. We're going to be using this 2024 defense as a measuring stick for the next decade.

Decent chance we are better next year than this year.
Lb should be better by virtue of getting older. Edge should be better for the same reason. DT a step back but not as much as everyone thinks. If Taaffe comes back and Williams is healthy we will have 4 guys at safety that will be really good.  Guilbeuaux a year older and in his contract year. I think Manny will be fine to really good. Maybe he takes a step and is elite. I’d like to see a couple corners come in the portal but they might already be on campus.
If Terry had a Simmons like freshman season things get really interesting.
Also, I expect every team on our schedule to be more or less dogshit offensively next year except maybe Florida, so… the defense will be elite level fine in all likelihood. Like, top 5 defense again by the numbers in the game.
Really only spot we are glaringly lacking that absolutely needs to be filled in the portal in my opinion is WR1. We need a stud.

I think it's probably too early to say and depends on NFL decisions and what the portal attiriton and additions look like. We're losing so much quality, highly experienced talent especially up front that it's hard not to give some ground. Taaffe and Moore coming back would be really big though.

Moore’s camp has told Bobby Burton that Trey Moore is returning to Texas. Nothing set in stone, but that would be a big deal, IMO.

Would be huge. Edge group would be downright filthy and take some pressure off a DT group that will probably need to find its legs.

Williams has elite ability if he can stay healthy. Him, McDonald, Taaffe, and Filsiame is a solid safety group.

CB is a bigger issue. Manny has been shaky and guys like Kobe Black and Wardell Mack are unproven.

The latter is why Taffee coming back is so big. Barring some kind of injury apocalypse it really fortifies the talent/experience level in the safety room and really makes that second CB spot the only part of the secondary with any real break-in needed. Lose him and you're all of a sudden having some young guys drink from the firehose more than you'd like.

I hear ya, but I said the same thing last year after losing Murphy and Sweat and look what happened this year.  With this transfer portal, you have to wait for things to play out to assess

Very curious to see if we portal in a starting-caliber RB with Blue moving on. Choice, to his credit, seems to really like and have loyalty to his guys, but if you swapped RBs in the Cotton Bowl we’d be playing for the title right now.

Yes, Gerry has said as much, few weeks back.

Is Hutson a shoo-in for center? Neither he nor Neto inspire confidence. If I recall Connor Robertson and Daniel Cruz are the other names I've heard associated with playing center, but obviously fewer snaps and less time incubating. At guard wondering if Connor Stroh or Andre Cojoe will make their presence known.

Other side of the ball, I'm cautiously optimistic about our two DT portal additions. Lole and Norton were better than expected and hoping part of that was due to Baker's coaching. One or two more from the spring window would be nice.

Yeah, he's heen practicing at center for emergency purposes (think Hayden Connor when Majors went down), but that's just their emergency replacement just in case due to Cruz still learning, and Robertson is just kinda there, but is capable. Cruz will, or at least should, replace Robertson at some point.

I've had Hutson penciled into the 2025 lineup for a while, but I would hope he gets some serious competition. For a guy who has played as much as he has over 3 years, he really hasn't gotten better.

Having him and Campbell return would be nice but I'm definitely not as excited about it as I was a few months back. While we are losing a lot with Majors and Conner, my hope is we can up the physicality on the interior to get back to more of the inside zone/play action stuff that has been Sark and Flood's bread and butter most of their time together.

Draft declarations have begun.

Max Merrill hasn't dropped his respect my decision, yet? Is that guy like 30 by now?

He played full seasons from 2021-2024. As I understand it, that still means you're out of eligibility at that point.

Wow. I was unaware that logic was allowed on this board. Now I'm fired up.

Time to feed myself some fentanyl intravenously and wrap my head around this.

JBlue will get drafted on speed alone. will he stick is the question.

There was probably a NIL number that made sense for Blue to come back but not sure if that number would have worked for us.  On one hand he's only going to have this speed for a limited number of years (and it could all be taken away with one injury) so if you can stay on an NFL roster as a RB, better to start that clock now.  On the other hand, unless he improves fumbling, pass pro and running through contact he could be off a roster soon.  Best of luck to him.  Hope it works out.  Definitely has the potential to be a solid pro.

Wow. You may actually be right regarding speed, but I wonder if they even care about that since his production isn't great, he fumbles a shit ton, and how his interviews go. I've seen him speak before games and he's a smart kid, but these guys in the NFL ask ridiculous personal questions to see how you react.  It's pretty fucked up. I remember when Dez Bryant brought it to light. I was like wtf? They go deeeeep into your personal life, issues with team, learning quickly, etc, and he almost transferred out one time. I doubt that last one matters, but IF he gets drafted I would bet 6th-7th rd.

disagree.  our defense was pretty damn good this year but it was not generational or anything.  we lost three games and didn't win our last one.  the team can get better and the defense doesn't have to regress.

now, sark is coaching this team and not nick saban so we may, in fact, regress, but we should never be resigned to it.

He actually finished with over 1000 yards from scrimmage this year. His biggest risks in going this year are the stacked RB class coming out and his fumblitis.

Agree on both. Man, those fumbles really screwed his draft stock. I don't know if it's a mental thing, or his arms just aren't strong enough to hold onto the ball when the defenders are constantly trying to rip the ball out# which they did, more than it should have been..

Going going back to last year he fumbled, too. Even with Baxter we just chalked it up to him being young, but at this point it has to be something else.

I think Dez has proven to be a bit of a headcase.

Oh I don't doubt that, but it did actually confirm it was when he was interviewed by the GM or whomever with the Dolphins. They asked about his mom being a prostitute (she's not), but it was a way to get a reaction and he walked out. The Dolphins fired him after it was released, I believe. Here's an article on it. There are several more, so I just picked one from a site I read.

For a receiving back he also had a pretty high number of drops.

This is a really good RB class, and he is more of a specialty player right now so it's going to have to be a pretty clean fit for him to get drafted and make it. But credit for him for getting in the conversation because I am the one who famously said after the Wyoming fumble last year that he would never have another meaningful carry here.

I thought it might make sense for him to portal to somewhere he can get more every-down touches but maybe he just wanted to be done with college football.

If he didn't finish with 2 good games in the playoffs, he's probably back in college next year in a different uniform. But he entered the season with the expectation to go pro and he and his crew feel like he's done enough to make that a realistic goal at this point.

I think you're right. playoffs got him drafted I bet.

It would be foolish for him to stay.  If Baxter is healthy, he’s going to be RB 3 next year.  He just had 4 TDs in the last 2 play off games.  He should go now, hope he gets drafted in the mid to late rounds and try to make a roster.  He can’t run inside the tackles, fumbles, and isn’t the best pass protector.   His stock isn’t going to get any higher staying at Texas.

Assuming we don't pick up anyone in the next few weeks, who will be our running backs in the spring? Gibson, Tre? Are either of the freshmen backs on campus?

That’s how I feel about Taaffe. Just think he’s at his apex as a safety, or better yet, as an uninjured safety. But sure, come back for the last year and try for  glory—only get these college years once.

How fast do people honestly think Blue is? Fast enough to remedy the him fumbling all the time? To remedy him going down with one arm tackles on the regular? To cover for weak pass pro?

The guy is a deeply flawed prospect coming out in what may be the deepest RB draft ever. If he gets drafted, I’ll be stunned.

I feel like with Keilan Robinson getting drafted, it kinda paves the way for Jaydon Blue to get drafted. It wouldn’t surprise me if he is or isn’t drafted.

I don't see it either. Maybe he can be moved to WR?

Last year's draft was more shallow than usual due to NIL keeping more guys in college an extra year. RB was especially weak last year. This year it's stacked at that position as a result.

Cruz?? Ion think we can just crown Robertson. What’s the point of recruiting all these high caliber players if we’re just gonna give them spots cause they’ve been here longer even though they might not be better

The cowboys drafted 5’5 Deuce Vaughn in the 6th rd. If Blue runs in the low 4.4s someone will draft him in the later rounds.
