NCAA CFP National Championships:

2024: Riley Leonard, mobile - Will Howard, mobile
2023: JJ McCarthy, mobile - Michael Penix, mobile
2022: Stetson Bennett, mobile - Max Duggan, mobile
2021: Stetson Bennett, mobile - Bryce Young, mobile
2020: Justin Fields, mobile - Mac Jones, not mobile but extends plays with getting out of pocket and moving pocket

I get what you're saying, but Michael Penix had 8 yards rushing his senior year. He can only dream of the rarefied air of Mac Jones'... 14 yards of rushing his final season.

I wonder what they are if you remove sack yardage. It's still not a lot, but probably much less stark.

Also, you must admit that Penix is much more mobile than Ewers - even post knee and other injuries. Go back and watch him navigate Texas' pressure last CFP. Ewers can't do what Penix did.

This. It’s not just taking off running, but moving around within the pocket or throwing on the run from pressure. Not stepping into sacks or unable to evade pressure.

Exactly. A "mobile" QB is basically table stakes in football nowadays. They don't need to be Vince Young, Tebow, Jackson, etc. However, they need to be able to evade pressure, move the pocket, and at least present the threat to run.

I'm not a "Ewers hater," but his upside is limited due to his lack of mobility and inconsistent pocket presence. He could only dream of doing this (timestamped) instead of falling down to protect himself:

I was mostly being snarky about calling Penix mobile and Mac Jones not mobile. Though I agree, neither of them self-sack the way Ewers does.

Ewers biggest issue was never sliding up a step or 2 in the pocket to buy himself some time.  Instead he would run/stumble into lineman or get so close to them that he no longer had room to throw.  It's the oddest thing to see happen over and over again.

He had an uncanny ability to slide up a step or 2 into a sack, though. He did that shit all the fucking time.

Every so often, he’d do it and make a great pass. But it was like 10% of the time, it felt like. He couldn’t do it consistently game or game

They seem to be defining Peyton Manning style "can move a step or two in the pocket to avoid pressure" as "mobile QB" which.... is just not what that means in any other context or conversation.

Goff is athletic because he has the best OL in football, or something

It really was uncanny. He'd feel backside pressure that wasn't really there, ignore the clean pocket two steps forward, then panic-run into frontside pressure and fall down.

Gerry on Coffee & Football this morning stated the cost is really high on Damon Wilson, and both him and Bobby alluded to him landing at Ohio State as they were his #2 out of HS and that they have a salary cap of 30 million to spend next year and they have a lot of players coming off the books.

It’s this. It’s often the difference between converting 3rd downs or RZ plays. Which makes all the difference in tight games.

I think I wrote this elsewhere, but with unlimited coaching roles available for hire, Sarkisian could easily create an "Offensive Red Zone Coordinator" position and hire someone with a proven background as a playcaller/designer in the red zone and short yardage situations. That person would collaborate with Sarkisian and have those circumstances as their main focus.

The red zone and short yardage situations have been a problem from day one for Sarkisian. He's fucking inept with those concepts. If he doesn't put in the work to fix it, which is not just film study but actually needed outside thinking and influence, then Texas will never win the whole thing with him at the helm.

He doesn't just need to polish up. He's incompetent and needs someone else managing the work in this regard.

Sark has a done a really good job of bringing in smart guys on defense to keep things fresh. Gary Patterson, Nansen, Scotty Hazelton (underrated hire in my opinion) to name a few.

Marion is the only guy on the offensive side I can think off the top of my head.

Have you watched Jared Goff play and how he moves in and out of the pocket? He's not sitting in the pocket and a statue.

Yes, he's one of the most immobile starting QBs in the league

Sounds like everyone needs to prepare their anus and some things are about to get ugly.

Sounds like my question yesterday as to how prepared we are on the NIL front collectively is about to get answered.   Do we still have shit participation from both small donors and large donors with a handful picking up way to big a %% of the tab?

Of the ones without the option to declare for the NFL, the ones that will really hurt are: Arch, Wingo, Simmons, Hill, Derek Williams, January, Goosby.

and Muhammad.

Simmons and Hill probably worry me the most. Obv Arch but I doubt he leaves.

Goff for his career has 276 rushing attempts and averages 2.0 YPC on those attempts with a success rate of 30.1 percent.

He ain't a mobile QB

Mobile QB isn't a running QB, he navigates pocket and gets out of pocket to continually extend plays. I'm unsure why you are conflating mobile QB with a Lamar Jackson type QB?

Texas just signed the #1 class in the country. NIL and those aiding it aren't an issue. There's not really anything that can be done if a billionaire comes in over the top for someone or if an aggressive collective offers a ridiculous pile of cash to someone. An entire roster has to be managed.

So Ohio State or Oregon? Great.
