Report: Badgers star CB Xavier Lucas to transfer to Miami without entering the transfer portal

The Badgers cornerback is a part of a unprecedent move with his transfer.

In an unprecedented move, Wisconsin Badgers star freshman cornerback Xavier Lucas is transferring to the Miami Hurricanes without ever entering the transfer portal, according to Yahoo Sports’s Ross Dellenger.

Lucas, who had signed a two-year rev-share agreement with the Badgers back in December, had announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal on December 19th.

He then filled out the requisite paperwork to enter the transfer portal, but the Badgers never officially put his name in, prompting the cornerback to hire attorney Darren Heitner to resolve the dispute.

Here is what Dellenger wrote on the situation:

“Lucas, a freshman this past season, withdrew from classes at Wisconsin and enrolled academically at Miami. By not formally signing with Miami, he presumably skirts any NCAA transfer rules. He enrolled for the Fall 2025 semester but is expected to be reclassified to Spring 2025,” Dellenger said.

“The move, for now, avoids a legal filing. Heitner had planned to file suit against both the NCAA and Wisconsin over antitrust claims related to the situation, accusing Wisconsin of blatantly violating NCAA rules by not inserting Lucas’ name into the portal as he requested and questioning the legality of the NCAA’s transfer portal.

“Wisconsin officials have remained quiet on the situation. However, the school is declining to enter Lucas into the portal as he signed a two-year revenue-share agreement last month before requesting a transfer. The agreement, a Big Ten-issued template form, binds Lucas — and all players who sign — to that specific school and grants that school a player’s non-exclusive rights to use and market their name, image, and likeness. The agreement prohibits the player’s rights to be used by any other school while permitting him or her to sign outside marketing agreements, according to those familiar with the template.”

Lucas had elected to transfer to Miami after his father suffered a “serious, life-threatening illness,” according to his attorney, who also shared that “in an act of desperation,” the cornerback and his family reached out to head coach Luke Fickell last week, who instead had hoped to convince him to stay at Wisconsin.

This situation seems far from over, but an NCAA spokesperson had shared that rules do not prevent Lucas from making the move.

“NCAA rules do not prevent a student-athlete from unenrolling from an institution, enrolling at a new institution and competing immediately,” an NCAA spokesperson said in a statement, via Dellenger.

We’ll see what’s next to come, but Lucas, as expected, is heading to the Miami Hurricanes.

Or if he has a computer..

The staff should be prepared for this. Brenen Thompson(sp?) transferred to OU last year so they have experience dealing with players transferring to teams on the schedule.

The bond stuff I thought was as because we didn’t formally join the sec till July.

More specifically:

In order to gain immediate eligibility, a student-athlete will need to declare his or her intent to transfer by February 1 for Fall sports, May 1 for Winter sports and July 1 for Spring sports.

I think the technicality is that it would be next year when they play if they go in the winter window. Spring window only gives a few months between signing and playing in games and is considered part of the football season.

Do you honestly believe that this is a thing for Texas or anyone else?

We got Bond in the coaching change 30 day window that was well before the spring period. Entered Jan 10 and we got him Jan 14

Teams change up their calls and signs every year, and by the time we play A&M every year, there's plenty of tape on basically everything we run in a given season. Comes down to game planning and execution at that point.

I mean I’m all for this, but isn’t there some transfer within the SEC rule?

And us.

We have an Arkansas transfer committed to us right now, and he doesn’t have to sit out a year.

Just for reference, I think the average male begins his mid-life crisis at age 40.

Personally, I did no research into whether this guy is good or not. However if he can kick the piss out of the ball in the correct direction, then I don't really care if he has grandkids or is drawing social security. Until shit like this is regulated, may as well take advantage of it.

You want us to take a second punter from the portal?

No, I was just speaking generally. I post any transfer portal news I see, not just ones I want Texas to chase.

I appreciate the updates on portallers, so thank you for that. I just made the mistaken assumption when you wrote, “take advantage of it,” you were suggesting Texas could take advantage of his availability and pursue. I see now you meant the player should take advantage of his opportunity.

And I think he’s older because he’s one of those grizzled Aussie dudes who went to high school with Paul Hogan.

Maybe you should do more research before you post next time.

Nahlin said today the early returns on Justus Terry are very, very good and they think he will contribute immediately.  That will be welcome for DT depth.

I figured he’d be too good to keep off the field

Ah yes, but what about the secret Arc… I mean Trey Owen’s package?

Just think less than 60 days ago, Ohio St fans wanted him fired.

I feel like it’s a perfect time to exit. Fuck those fools, you just won a math and don’t have to deal with the insanity of those fans
