Or...and hear me out, maybe I "misread" your tone because you're one of the most consistent assholes on the site.

You can't even take a fucking compliment without being a dick.

No. No, I don’t think that’s the case. I’ve been told by a lot of people that I am a super nice guy and I care about all of us being happy in this community. Sort of a “Unite-er-er” some might say. So thank you for whatever compliment you were typing about that I missed.

Being insecure and overly sensitive is a tough way to make it in life, so I’m going to be rooting for you on your journey with this site.

Fair, however "my buddy prefers blondes" and "my buddy is a whore for blondes and would never go after a brunette, even one I think is great" kinda carry different vibes.

Is there something wrong with being a whore for blondes?

Asking for a friend.

Smith put a gun to OSU’s head on signing day last year as well. He’s a more flamboyant Xavier Worthy when it comes to the NIL side of being a young star at WR. Anyone doubting his audacity isn’t paying attention.

I can state with certainty that a national star asking for $5M in NIL is very believable.  That doesn’t mean they’re going to get that, to be clear. As a for instance, Texas wouldn’t come anywhere close to that number for someone, but good luck at Oregon or Michigan if OSU can’t make it work, I guess.

In truth, even for a star like Smith, paying out to that level will create unmanageable problems inside the lockerroom. Try telling Caleb Downs that he’s not worth something similar.

Can't really put myself in the shoes of an individual writing 6 or 7 figure NIL checks, but I would like to think that if I just contributed that kind of $$ and was actually rewarded with a championship, I would be more likely to be content and pull back rather than double or triple down in an attempt to run it back appreciating how hard they are to win.  Of course, I guess they still have the whole MIchigan problem which might drive them just as much if not more than winning titles.

at this point, seeing his stardom.. NIL collectives won't be paying him the money..wouldn't it be endorsements that would pay for that?  Like Nike for example

This is where a salary cap or some sort of structure would be nice.

The first to break that under the table would be our mouth breathing conference rivals and Texas would be right back where we were 5 years ago.

Given the obvious draw of the almighty dollar,  it's impressive that even a program with deep pockets could hold a roster together after the season we just had and the talent we return. How much of that came down to straight NIL vs. relationships, team culture and/or the appeal of Austin itself? The answer undoubtedly varies from player to player. I'll assume nobody turned down ridiculously more money from elsewhere, but it speaks even better of our program and its trajectory if they did. Just a great effort by everyone involved.

For the shit we have given Muhammad, he ultimately decided to stay at Texas. He’s not super charitable, but ultimately the whole package at Texas was better than whatever he was getting offered by clowns in the ACC and Oregon.

D Moore? Less so. For a guy who dropped like 15 passes this year, he and his mother sure think highly of his abilities.  I guess Sarkisian does too. Maybe mix in a few more catches in 2025, buddy.

One thing about the offense that has bothered me for awhile now is the fact that the supposed superstars are sometimes not getting the ball enough. Even though Wingo was a freshman, it seemed that both Moore and Wingo were underutilized. Or, are they not as good as we thought? With Wingo it might just be his experience level, but Moore should have done more. Will find out in 2025 imo.

I think we as a group were speculating on this - possibly in this thread, can't remember - a few weeks ago. The model going forward for the big programs may be everyone getting on the same page at the same time for a big run, then dialing it back afterwards to regroup. It'll be really hard to sustain $20-$30mm rosters year in and year out unless you have an Uncle Phil who has fuck you money and just doesn't care. And even then, Uncle Phil isn't immortal.

What will be interesting is how this it plays out with coaches. Will programs be patient with a previously successful head coach if some lean years are coming up? Or conversely, will successful coaches stick around if the resources are going to dry up for a while or will they try to job hop in that situation?

I mean, the kid blew out his knee as a senior.  In hindsight it was a bad move. At the time, only Westlake honks were questioning it. Aggy didn't recruit him, either, and they were still considered a football school back then.

It was in the playoffs junior year and that's when a lot of teams backed off.  Came back and lead Westlake to a state championship his Senior year.

There will always be people who push the limits. It is absolutely wild to me that there are Texas fans who want to go back to a world where instead of requiring a billionaire like Knight or Ellison to keep players from Texas for financial reasons, Jim Bob's Used Auto Yard outside Tuscaloosa can do it.

So Ohio State had a reported $20 million budget for their entire roster last year and Smith is getting $5 million next year? That seems insane to me proportionately, unless there are other non-collective generated funds contributing to that $5 million number.

Well the rumor was Ohio State went ALL IN to win that title with that roster.  Not sure they will match or exceed 2024's payroll

Deandre Moore was never supposed to be a superstar this year. Neither was Ryan Wingo.

Bond was the guy penciled in for that, Golden also had a good chance of breaking out.

Moore seized the opportunity, did more than I expected, and now hopefully he steps it up another level as the clear #1 or 2 and gets drafted next year.

I don't think I ever thought to myself once this season, "Man, we need to involve DeAndre Moore more". 39 catches as the 4th or 5th pass-catching option in the offense seems about right.

Hell, it felt like 75% of his production came on those wide-open fake screen wheel routes where there wasn't anyone within 10 yards of him.

The biggest impact on roster stability is some sort of speed bumps on transfers and portal. Not sure if that’s possible but the current state isn’t sustainable.

Aside from the money coaching is year round with so much effort going into keeping what you already have. And 5 years you gotta go get a real job Mr. Rising.

Amount counting against the cap this past year, $5 million would put Smith right below Olave and above St. Brown. That's pretty absurd but I guess not unexpected in a market that is still in its infancy and filled with payers emotionally invested and trying to one up each other.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/player/_/year/2024/position/wr/sort/cap_total

Are these outliers like Smith and MM going to be the cost of business or is there a way forward to stop/mitigate it? Do you just hope your culture takes care of most of it?

Ryan Wingo is WR1.

I think Moore could turn into a solid player but he was pretty much just a guy last year. It wasn't awful but it wasn't great. His blocking ability was appreciated considering what we got out of Bond and Golden in that area.

I hear what you're saying. My comment came from just my general perception, more than looking at it from the final season statistics.  Bond was injured, so there were some extra catches available there. When I looked at the season passing yards stats for WR's, both Wingo and Moore, who were starters, were pretty far down the list in yardage. But to your point, if you assume Golden takes 750-1000 yards, Helm takes 750-100 yards, Bond gets 500 due to injuries, they probably didn't finish all that low on yardage/catches. I expected at the beginning of the year for one of Wingo or Moore to actually show more than Golden.  Golden ended up being a strong as people thought.  Wingo is special and should have much higher numbers in 2025 and even Moore imo is capable of a lot more. We need to make sure we are getting the ball in the hands of the really dynamic players. Not sure if Moore fits in that category or not. Wingo definitely does.

Bobby has said he has spoken to Ohio St NIL people and their budget for next year is 30 million.
