I don’t know anyone who owns businesses and just hires random ex football players for the hell of it, myself included. That’s fan fiction.

This notion that Maalik Murphy, who quit on his team last year while in a key role, and who quit on his team this cycle ahead of the bowl, is just going to win employment because he played QB, is ignorant and laughable.  That shit is reserved for all time greats loyal to a particular school.

This sport with “big cigars” donating 6,7 digits to an athletic program — and now with pretty direct NIL payments — you think the generosity stops once a players eligibility run out?

Guys will give extravagant money to get good seats and invitation to events but they actually dont care about the athletes?

For fucks sakes, people here obsess with CFB so much they watch clips of high schoolers and track where they choose to go to college. In a world where people give jobs to their golfing pals kids, why do you find it implausible that a football star who plays on national TV and gets written about on ESPN gets favoritism for introductions, interviews, or even job placements?

The plain fact is whether UT’s Comm is the best or the worst program in the world would do fuck all to change the career prospect of Maalik Murphy.

Do you watch Johnny Be Good on a loop or something?

Outside of one-offs and "anecdotes", what I said is correct. What you continue to write is ignorant fan fiction. Do you think a bunch of the athletes who actually graduated winding up as realtors and podcasters is a sign of anything? Hint: it's not indicative of millionaires and billionaires randomly paying large sums to them to go to work with them and be buddies.

Also, knowing some of these guys on the player side over the years, randomly, the position you can't let go of here would be insulting to them.

Actually he did, your are correct.  But only after it had been lied about publicly.  By all accounts he is a good kid and team player.  Should end up in Miami.

its Indiana apparently.  Been in the works for weeks and his brother is also there.  Family loves Cignetti, etc.  "Slight" upgrade in coaching I would think haha

It’s looking like Quinn coming back may have been a bad choice for both parties.  He would have probably got drafted 2nd- 4th round last year and Texas probably would be in a better state on offense with Arch having a season of experience.

From his vantage point, that was a much stronger QB class.  He would've been QB 7 or 8 at best.  Up until the injury, he was basically QB1 for this draft.

We seem to have quite a few of those around here. It makes me shudder to think how many must be lurking on Texags and SEC Rant and Tigerdroppings. Oh wait, I was recently told that all alumni networks, and thus all alumni, are created equal.

I think most people who run, or are invovled in running small businesses, laugh at the idea that we'd want to hire the most competent people for the job we can find, as opposed to filling an empty seet to be able to give a former athlete attaboys. I sure as hell don't see former players who run their own businesses hiring anyone other than the  people they think can help them make money. Weird.

Nix was the sixth and last QB taken in the first round at #12. I think Ewers would have gone before pick #32.

Hindsight is 20/20. We all understand that, including Ewers, which is probably why he's willing to leave for a mid grade as opposed to testing transfer portal waters or risk Sark saying "This spring is an open competition for the starter spot." It's quite possible he's learned his lesson and figures going pro and being a full time QB with full time support is probably the best thing he can do for his career long-term.

Well that's certainly a take.  Another is the CFP schedule vs. the portal schedule pushed a backup who wanted playing time to the portal in the only viable window (Spring window sucks for QB and we all know it).  A player who by accounts did right by Texas, was loved by teammates and coaches, and really didn't want to go but had to if he wanted to progress in his career.  Your framing is, as usual, over-simplified, one-sided and lacking appropriate context.

I get that your schtick is to be the hyper-reductive asshole, so carry on.

I’ve seen this kid play in person several times, including as a high school senior. He’s built like Albert Haynesworth and has some athletic ability, but he just doesn’t seem to have a good motor or technique because he hardly made any plays. He’s in his third year at UNC and was still 2nd team on a terrible defense. I know we need bodies at this position and he’s a big one, but I certainly wouldn’t pay him much because I’m not sure the light is ever coming on for him.

I want to echo this because I’ve made home loans to quite a few former football players.  They are pretty much on their own, in fact, once their eligibility is up.  Granted, the ones I’ve worked with aren’t trying to get on with Freeport McMoRan.

The one exception I’ve seen is several Anglo players that parlayed their (presumably) football derived connections to get their foot in the door in commercial property and/or development.

Quinn could be the difference in a school like Auburn winning 9-10 games next year vs winning 5-6. Oregon, Ohio State, USC and a bunch of SEC teams may be looking for a QB

It won't be talked about on Texas sites, for good reason. We have a playoff to prepare for and Ewers is the starting QB. Even if Sark decided to roll with Manning for the playoff you don't want to let Clemson know that.

Any smoke concerning Ewers movement is likely to come from other fanbases

Yeah, like that Auburn board. That's legit.

If you were Quinn Ewers, would you transfer to somplace with shittier complementary talent than Texas to try and rehab your regressing career, when you're already a millionaire, or would you just get drafted and work on your craft professionally? I mean, it's an obvious answer to me but apparently not to lots of folks on the internet.

Didn’t realize that was a hot take. It wasn’t college level but I played on some losing baseball teams in the past. Do I want 2 out of my 11 starters on defense to be players that have been conditioned to expect failure in crunch time? That spent several years in a culture that accepted and manifested losing? If Sark thinks they’re guys that can reframe their mindset immediately then go for it.

Well, let's see.  The safety has 210 total tackles, six interceptions, 14 PBU, 6.5 TFL, a sack, and two forced fumbles in two seasons.  He's got Ohio State and Oregon pursuing him, among others.  Yeah, he'd be a terrible addition because he clearly has a losing mentality.

The DT has requisite size (330+) and racked up a 71 overall grade (which is pretty good) in '24 according to PFF.  He's obviously playing with a losing mentality.

The punter averaged about a 45 gross and just under a 42 net on roughly a million punts this past season, so that's a pretty good sample size.

I can see Texas passing on the safety not because he isn't a quality player, but simply because it's not particularly a position of need, esp. with McDonald and Filsaime waiting in the wings, Williams coming back after injury, and some hotshit freshmen on the way in.  But the other two guys are quality performers at positions of need.  They are takes all day, every day in the event they want to come to Texas.

The safety is good and the DT would be a 20 snaps a game guy. Good players from shitty teams are drafted into the NFL or portal by good teams every cycle and end up being excellent. Patrick Mahomes never won a fucking thing coming up the ranks at shitty schools before leading the Chiefs to numerous titles. Hudson Card was hailed as a winner coming into the Texas program and has done nothing but suck in college. It’s a silly take.
