This is going to be like the Hershel Walker trade to the Vikings where we sent Hudson Card to Purdue and then they sent us like 5 players in return.

Hudson was out there handing out Austin travel guides and taking the team down to his family's house on Lake Travis on bye weeks

So just postulating here...

But if Texas signs a pretty good DL haul from the portal, it pretty much has to be taken as fact that it's because Helobious really fucking knows his way around other men's shafts, right? Like a once in a generation dong director kind of skillset. A real boss of the hog.

A succesful portal outcome makes this fait accompli. Or his skillset makes a succesful portal outcome fait accompli, however you guys like to view it.

Do we know what is going to happen with Niblack? I’ve just assumed he is moving on.

I know everyone is pretty high on Jordan Washington but it gets pretty scary behind him. Spencer Shannon, Will Randle and 2 true freshman. Adding a proven guy would make a lot of sense.

Nobody knows, but it sounds like he came here to be developed.  Helm and Davis will be gone next year so we need at least one more TE even with Niblack stepping up.

That would be six scholarship TEs. If we still need to add another one there needs to be some cleaning done to that room.

I think there's a non zero chance that some cleaning might come on it's own. Nothing insider here. I don't see Arch's boy leaving, but Spencer Shannon could be a casualty.

Yes, he's sure a handy guy to have around supporting the team.

As compared to 10 years ago, it seems to be getting a little easier predicting who will be a bust in a recruiting class. Ross, Bryant, Mitchell, etc. were all flagged as pretty big risks when they signed, except by a few fanboys who blindly love everyone Texas takes, usually with a “trust the coaches” reference.

FCB with a few portal related notes

Spoiler

— The cold, hard fact is that none of the defensive tackles recruited out of high school by Bo Davis in 2022 (Bledsoe, Bryant, Kristopher Ross and Zac Swanson) remain on the roster.

Mitchell, the only tackle signed by Texas in 2023, is hanging on by a thread.

In the 2024 signing class, Alex January (6-4, 325) is a guy the coaches are high on going forward. The jury is still out on fellow true freshman Melvin Hills Jr. (6-3, 305), who hasn't played a snap this season.

D'antre Robinson bailed on Texas after signing in the 2024 cycle, enrolling at Floridawhen Bo Davis left for LSU in January. (Robinson played 139 snaps across 10 games this season for the Gators, posting two tackles in Florida's 49-17 loss to the Longhorns in Austin on Nov. 9).

The 2025 signing class — Justus Terry, Lance Jackson, Myron Charles and Josiah Sharma — could do for the interior defensive line what the 2022 signing class has to help transform the Texas offensive line. Kelvin Banks Jr., DJ Campbell, Cameron Williams, Cole Hutson, Neto Umeozulu and Connor Robertson came to the Forty Acres in the first full recruiting cycle on the job for Steve Sarkisian and Kyle Flood.

This group of incoming defensive tackles should be a foundational type of class that becomes dominant over the next three to four years.

Baker led the charge in recruiting three blue-chip defensive line prospects in the 2025 cycle. Still, Texas will look for interior defensive line help in the transfer portal. (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)

The headliner is Terry, who's being compared to a young Jalen Carter. The former Georgiadefensive lineman was a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft (No. 9 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles).

Kudos to Texas defensive line coach Kenny Baker, who led the recruitments of Terry, Charles and Sharma. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski, who was named a finalist for the Broyles Award on Wednesday, was the point man for Jackson's recruitment.

With eligibility expiring after this season for current defensive tackles Alfred Collins (472 snaps in 2024), Vernon Broughton (452 snaps), Jermayne Lole (352 snaps) and Bill Norton (195 snaps), Texas is planning to hit the transfer portal hard again for veteran, SEC-ready interior defensive linemen.

With all of 86 snaps logged as a true freshman this season, January is suddenly the Longhorns' most experienced returnee on the interior defensive line.

"Players on the defensive line are being told there could be three or four defensive tackles targeted out of the portal," a source close to the situation told Horns247.

Texas struck gold on the interior defensive line out of the portal in 2024 with Lole and Norton. Both signed with Texas in April, after spring practice wrapped up.

"The coaches will be patient like last year, but they'll move quickly when the right players enter the portal," the source said. "And Kenny Baker is in charge. He's running things. We've seen what he's done on the field in getting players to keep improving, and now he's showing what he can do in recruiting. In another year or two, when this 2025 class of [defensive] tackles are out there dominating, everyone in college football will be talking about Kenny Baker."

— Speaking of the defensive line, next year, junior Ethan Burke will move to the strong side (Jack), where he'll replace Barryn Sorrell, a source close to the situation told Horns247.

Burke and redshirt freshman Colton Vasekwill work the strong side, while Colin Simmons moves into a more prominent role as the Buck position, where Trey Moore has started every game this season. Team sources believe Moore, a junior, will likely enter the 2025 NFL Draft, but Moore hasn't made a final decision.

— Team sources said Texas is likely to bring in a veteran linebacker out of the portal to replace David Gbenda's role in the rotation. Coaches love true freshman Ty'Anthony Smith, but all of the depth at the position is walking out the door with Gbenda and Morice Blackwell Jr. out of eligibility and redshirt freshmen Derion Gullette and Tausili Akana in the portal.

An intriguing name to keep an eye on as a potential portal linebacker target is Arizona's Jacob Manu, who was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection in 2023 under then-defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen. Manu recorded 116 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, one interception and three passes defended in 2023 before battling a knee injury and playing in only seven games in 2024.

This feels like revisionist history.

I don't remember any of those guys being flagged as "big risks" whatsoever when they came out. Some folks weren't as high on Ross becuase of concerns, but "big risk" seems like a stretch. Everyone assumed a kid on a college S&C and nutrition program would be able to gain 20-25 pounds on a college nutrition and S&C program. Instead the fucking guy came in and lost 10. I feel like that's a pretty rare occurrence.

Mitchell was coveted by everyone at the time, including GA, and he was a big win. Yes, he was a big body, but everyone was high on that guy, and he still has great qualities. His problem is his head. I don't remember ANY large segment of guys saying he was a Finch from wildcats style fatbody who would never amount to anything. This shit is what's happening in retrospect.

I don't really remember any of Bryant's recruitment either way.

Odd that no one is mentioning Jaray Beldooe here, who basically enrolled academically by the skin of his teeth, and succesfully doing that was a shock to many. People threw around terms like "learning disability" at the time, yet we never hear that mentioned as part of his bust factor.

I was just about to respond similarly. This board was giving Bo Davis a sloppy blow job after the 2022 DT/Edge class.  Same thing with Sydir Mitchel. The revolt against Davis came later.

In the hypothetical world where I’m not one of the straightest posters on this site, I think I could do a hell of a lot better than giving out handjobs to dollar-bin sports agents or fatfuck d-linemen from losing college teams. You guys have dumb fantasies

From what I recall of the ‘23 DT class, we liked Mitchell as a high-upside take but hated only signing one DT

I know that whenever I hear someone go out of their way to tell me just how straight they are, they're absolutely, never ever overcompensating or trying to misdirect people.

That being said, I've never seen someone follow up in the next sentence by "offering to do more than just give out handjobs." The ole' "I'm straighter than the equator, but I could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch and spit it back on as a disco ball" dynamic, eh?

If you want to throw in some mouth work or even spread your cheeks for some truly talented roster beef, no one here is going to stop you. We're going to fucking cheer you on, man. You're the absolutely-no-joke-super-straight-handjob-hero we need right now. God bless.
