Listening to last night's OTF stream, Bobby pointed out that we've already taken 4 DL thus far in the portal.

BPA is the theme going forward, and I wonder if one of those transfers decides to jump ship a la Kendrick Blackshire.

They also might be backfilling the depth chart so we don't have to be so reliant on portal as such an expensive position.

With Brevard and Shaw gone after next year there isn't much there in the depth chart. If Kanu has a big year and burst on the scene he could split as well. Terry is working at buck currently in the defense and he can slide in if he puts the weight on.

Kanu hasn’t started a single game and has not been mentioned by any spring practice report as being one of our starters and you are already suggesting he is leaving early for the NFL Maybe try not to get ahead of yourself.

I'm not suggesting anything. It's quite literally a hypothetical situation. Even him being on the roster next year the depth chart isn't that great.

Sharma is 365 lbs, he's the biggest guy on the roster, how is he not a nose tackle?

What up with Micah Hudson yeah I know screw that guy because he didn’t choose us but is it mental health or just wr diva?

I don't think anyone plugged in on this board has said one way or another. from what we can tell and know its both. he was being a WR/Diva and wanted more usage at Tech. he portaled to A&M and then he left the team citing mental health. Our guess is as good as yours.

What's really cool here is that the staff signed 3 high school DT's that they battled for - three guys they really wanted at that position, and with what they've done in the portal, they've pretty much declared that they won't rely on any of them for snaps inside this year (I'm guessing Terry will get some burn at the 5 tech).  Being able to give those guys a true redshirt year is top tier roster management.

And the best part is that the staff won't slash the incoming class NIL $$ for red shirting and developing 👀

Going all out to load up the defensive line while letting the young DBs grow behind them is a pretty decent plan.

Especially if we are truly going to play press and man coverage.

Just  FYI -

Bobby started the OTF show today by talking about " ... if we get good news later today about Maraad Watson", and later, " "... we're certainly going to be waiting on it (the good news)".  And he and Gerry were then talking about hypothetical lineups and roster situations w/ Maraad Watson on the team.

Syracuse DL Maraad Watson
At this point, Maraad Watson has just one visit scheduled — Texas. The Longhorns are making Watson a top priority and have the momentum by landing the first visit. Ohio State is also in the picture with Tennessee.

Starting to see a pattern here: player x enters the portal, they immediately receive a lot of speculation about multiple schools from clueless reporters, then they only take a single visit to Texas and commit.

From an organizational level, sure seems like we are operating the portal right now at an elite level.

This is going to be so fun to watch.  There is no scenario in which a team can get away with not doubling Colin Simmons.  Same goes for Ant Hill or Trey Moore when they walk down.  Hell, I would want a chip or some tight end help with Vasek.  Now you're adding actual disruptors an arm length from the QB on the inside.  It'll be interesting to see what the pressure rates are for opposing quarterbacks.  There were times I watched the defense last year, and it was an absolute master class.  I think this will be the second year in a row that the defense loses tackles to the draft, and gets better.  The ball will have to get out so quickly that they could grab 25+ picks this year to go with 45+ sacks.   Thanks for pulling up to my Kool-Aid stand

Even though you haven’t posted much, I like many of your takes, but respectfully, what do you know about Vasek the rest of us don’t ? 🤣

I think he's a really good pass rusher.  Guy stays dinged up, but when he's out there, he's really disruptive.   I love Burke against the run, and actually think they're both NFL guys.  Just hopeful that we get to see more meaningful snaps for Vasek.  It'll be interesting to see if he's able to hold off Jackson, but I'd imagine Trey Moore moved to the second level to allow more time for those guys on the end.

Thought the same thing.  He must be thinking about Burke.

No, I think Vasek is the better pass rusher of the two.  They both put up two sacks on the season - Burke in 13 games, Vasek in 4.   Seems to be a little more twitchy and able to round the corner.  Sorry to deviate so far from transfer cycle talk, but did want to explain why I actually like the guy.  Seems like he's been hurt for years, but the reality is he's headed into his sophomore season on the field.

Trey Moore moved to the LB hybrid role because he will need to show that ability to improve his draft chances. He's undersized for a true defensive end in the NFL. He has to show the range of a 3-4 OLB type.

He's this year's "Barron to CB" project.

I hope the move helps his draft grade.  More important to me as a fan, and I'm sure to the coaches is that every move made positionally or otherwise is to strengthen the team.  If it's not about getting the best 11 on the field in any given situation, I don't think this staff is going for it.  If both boxes get checked, it's a win/win.

Now that we're on the subject, is it weird that we haven't pursued any transfer EDGE/DE/Buck/Jack/whatever? We seem a little thin there, especially considering Vasek's injury history. They must really like what they're seeing out of Zina and Terry?

Nice that Texas finally decided we have a payroll to meet.

The Stanford pass rusher visited.  Double Eagle money and less competition for PT prevailed.

They did go after that guy that ended up at tech.

The problem there is what they have is high end. Simmons is all American level, Burke and Moore (if needed) are very good. The young guys must be looking solid as well. So any transfer would have to be up at that level to make any sense.

We might be as good defensively but we will be facing much better offenses and quarterback play this year.

Any comments from spring practice insiders on whether Simmons looks better/bigger this spring? If Simmons improves which is likely, opposing QBs are in for a world of hurt.

I haven't seen stats, but Vasek may have a higher win rate than Simmons. He is a problem when he is healthy. If he did manage to get extended time opposite Simmons it would be nightmare fuel for OCs.
