Any comments from spring practice insiders on whether Simmons looks better/bigger this spring? If Simmons improves which is likely, opposing QBs are in for a world of hurt.

The Archmania thread on the Football board may be a better resource (if you can stomach the Football board) but I can say Simmons is wired a little differently based on watching a recent Pivot podcast. Fred Taylor was talking about lining up against Colin and Ant Hill, and instead of being deferential to the old guy, Simmons seemed like he was ready to take him up on the concept, with the subtext being, “Ok, you’ll lose.” It was a bit uncomfortable 🤣.

We might be as good defensively but we will be facing much better offenses and quarterback play this year.

We are?

Ohio State - new qb

GA - new qb

OU - new qb

florida - agreed

AM - unlikely a big leap offense wise

Who else?

Starting to see a pattern here: player x enters the portal, they immediately receive a lot of speculation about multiple schools from clueless reporters, then they only take a single visit to Texas and commit.

From an organizational level, sure seems like we are operating the portal right now at an elite level.

After the 2022 Alabama game the same was said by a lot of people about Ewers.

Way too early to say that. Arch has to develop.

The OU QB is better than the dude we faced last year.

How many great QBs are returning in CFB? It'll have to be an Arch type situation where you expect an inexperienced guy to take the leap and become great.

Still better than the ivy league walk on guy.

Good point on OU - wonder if that OL gets healthier/better.  WR looks.....challenging.

Per ESPN:  Top QB returning:

15. Darian Mensah, Duke.
14. Sawyer Robertson, Baylor.
13. Luke Altmyer, Illinois.
12. Arch Manning, Texas.
11. Kevin Jennings, SMU.
10. DJ Lagway, Florida.
9. Haynes King, GT.
8. Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee.
7. Carson Beck, Miami.
6. Sam Leavitt, ASU.
5. LeNorris Sellers, SCAR.
4. John Mateer, 0U.
3. Garret Nussmeyer, LSU.
2. Drew Allar, PSU.

  1. Cade Klubnik, Clemson

Mateer and Lagway only ones on schedule.  Lot of Meh on this list.

The Ohio st. offense will be much better than the barf Michigan trotted out there last year.

OUs offensive will be improved

Florida as you mentioned.

They're pumping sunshine like all of us, but the consensus is that he's a worker.  As it stands, PFF already graded him the best edge rusher in college football coming into the season.  Should there be any normal trajectory of progression he's a top five pick in his draft class and probably the first non-QB or guy not named Archibald to come off the board.  We need to enjoy the next couple years, he's a generational guy.  No hyperbole.

I don't think it's been talked about by anyone but he got surgery recently. To keep up the charade he played 5-6 snaps in the spring game and every one was a hand off

edit: looks like they're soft launching the surgery idea even though it's already happened: https://www.essentiallysports.com/ncaa-college-football-news-dj-lagways-injury-saga-takes-new-turn-as-potential-surgery-confirmed-adding-to-billy-napiers-florida-woes/

We’ll see. Mateer was dogshit against top 60-ish defenses last year. He’s going to face a bunch of those this year. Same for his OC.

Remind me how many returning starters tOSU has on offense?

I think it's five?

no QB, no RB, no TE

Jeremiah Smith and technically their #3 WR Carnell Tate

technically their LG who came back but didn't start most of the year

technically their Center who started after their old guy got hurt and started in 23

their RG

All this with Day taking over a bunch on offense and their OC being Hartline. We've seen Ryan Day do less with better QBs than they very very green Julian Sayin.

Off topic but I can't help but feel comforted we faced next year's top QB in the playoff and did decent.  Good for experience on the player and coaching side..

Cade Klubnik
LeNorris Sellers
John Mateer
Arch Manning
DJ Lagway
Drew Allar
Haynes King
Carson Beck
Nico Iamaleava
Kevin Jennings
Luke Altmyer
Sawyer Robinson
Darian Mensah

I’ve only been paying a little attention this offseason but it sure seems we have helped ourselves quite a bit in the portal. Great synergy of coaches, staff, and boosters making things happen in smart ways.

I’d like the Houston corner Wilson. But maybe the young guys have impressed the staff enough they don’t need him.

BYU guy is more of a kick returner.  Hasn’t fielded a punt since 2021.  If we go after a return man, we need a punt returner more than a kick returner.  One who does both well would be ideal.

I’d still like a running back.  Seasons are up to 16 games now.  Two of our six are coming off catastrophic injuries.

Ian Boyd is grumbling somewhere about Texas not having enough talent to make the playoffs.

You're not going to get much complaining about the new world from those schools, they're net beneficiaries.

Naming those teams was in reference to our newest commit
