that's not any different than a traditionally safe red seat in a red state, be it a house rep or a senator.  in both cases, the primary is the general and in both cases, it's subject to attack from the extreme of the party because (for the most part) only nuts vote in primaries (even when they're basically the general).

Well eventually the team she has writing all this will move on to something else, a senator or something.

I can't tell you how many plumbers who have told me "don't put anything in the garbage disposal but water".

I tell my wife.  She responds (while jamming onion peels down the disposal) "OK, got it".

I don't think much of anyone in the NYC area has a garbage disposal--it will damage the old pipes/sewer system.  It's probably more of a regional thing than anything else.

I think they were illegal in NYC, and still might be. Which would explain why she's never seen one.

If you don't live in an area with bad plumbing infrastructure, get yourself a 3/4 or 1 HP garbage disposal for home use and you'll probably never have an issue.

You take your chances with weaker powered models.

When did Twitter become a publisher and not an open forum?

Twitter gets to be whatever the fuck they want.  If they want to ban racist shit heads and virtually all of those racist shit heads are republicans because the republican party is the party of racist shit heads, then Twitter can do that.

Since that time it became a private company hosting things on the internet, aka, from the very beginning. See, the government is required by the first amendment to allow most types of speech. On the other hand, not only are private corporations not obligated to enforce the first amendment, they can actually be held liable for allowing certain kinds of speech to exist on their site, for instance if they don't respond to a take down request for copyright infringement. And, more than that, if allowing unfiltered speech costs them money, they have a pretty heavy incentive (and potentially a duty if a public company) to rectify the issue.

When did parody accounts go against terms of service, also that's illegal.

It’s not a 1st Amendment issue, but it is pretty weak to ban the parody account.  I’m all for things like the WSJ cleaning up their comments section, but an AOC parody account on Twitter isn’t like a troll derailing a message board conversation or a hate group inciting violence.  It doesn’t really even affect other users if they want to avoid it.

It’s basically just Twitter saying you can’t use their forum to make fun of a public figure the company likes.  Which isn’t against the law, but it’s awfully bitchassed.

It's entirely bitchassed.  I hope the banning was more nuanced, like specific threats or other violations of terms.  Even then, that's a spooky road to go down.

They didn't ban it for being a parody. They banned it for being a parody while misleadingly portraying itself as a real account.

Although the @AOCpress account included the word “parody” in its name and bio, it also included the phrase “official press releases for AOC," according to a November 2018 screenshot published by fact-checking website Snopes. The account also used Ocasio-Cortez’s real Twitter photo.

The @AOCpress account spawned a raft of fact-checking articles from media watchdogs Snopes, Politifact and FactCheck.org in February, after it seemingly convinced numerous Twitter users that Ocasio-Cortez had called an Alabama woman who joined ISIS a "hero."

Screengrabs of the tweet in question are still available on Facebook as of 10.30 a.m. ET Tuesday—two and a half months after they were first posted. The screengrabs do not indicate the tweets came from a parody account.

Newsweek understands Twitter blocked Morrison's @AOCpress and personal accounts because the platform deemed they did not comply with this specific rule: “While you may use Twitter pseudonymously or as a parody, commentary, or fan account, you may not use misleading account information in order to engage in spamming, abusive, or disruptive behavior including attempts to manipulate the conversations on Twitter.”

...

Twitter reportedly sent Morrison an email explaining their fake accounts policy. As well as the rule described above, it said: “You also may not post duplicative or substantially similar content, replies, or mentions over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate updates on one account, or create duplicate or substantially similar accounts."

Actually, yes, under the terms of service the account name that appears with every tweet must include a designation showing non-affiliation. Here, he added "parody" to the end of the account name. But, he also chose a long name, whether on purpose or not, that is truncated on mobile devices, often completely hiding the designation of "parody". As a result, the posts were misleading. The rule is that it has to be clear to the intended audience that the account is a parody. These posts weren't.

I agree with everything you're saying here but one thing that I can't get past is the fact that even if the account was named "NOT REALLY AOC," huge chunks of the country would believe it was her in a retweet called "You won't believe what NOT REALLY AOC said yesterday."  Not that you can accurately moderate by specious assumptions of mass idiocy, but I have no doubt that would be a problem.  "I can't believe what WEIRD MOUTH STEVE MNUCHIN NOT REALLY HIM said on twitter this morning.  He wants to dump raw sewage into daycares."

And telling what’s real and what’s fake or misleading is getting harder.

Bill Kristol trolled and duped a bunch of people on Twitter today by posting a decade old video of Marco Rubio calling for the AG’s resignation.

It was directed at Eric Holder.

But he just tweeted the video and said “Powerful statement from Senator Rubio”.

When even legitimate news people are fucking with people, it’s time to just cut off the internet.

See, what you don't understand is that people are fucking stupid, generally speaking and present company excluded of course. So, most people would not be able to tell the difference.

Anyway, not sure if those goes here or the Republican party thread or the right wing thread of fail, but here it is:

"As for me, I love and cherish the environment; it’s what makes Florida so great," wrote Scott, whose administration reportedly banned the words "climate change" and "global warming" in Florida governmental communications. "What I don't love is naive plans that would destroy Florida's economy."

Ocasio-Cortez clearly had time today and proceeded to rip Scott a new one.

"That a sitting US Senator can say something lacking so much critical thinking + honesty is embarrassing to the institution," she wrote on Twitter. "If you were a female candidate, maybe you'd be called 'unlikeable,' 'crazy,' or 'uninformed.' But since you’re not, this inadequacy is accepted as normal."

There are people on this website - university of Texas grads, presumably - who think that a private business should be able to exclude persons on racial grounds, but are upset when Twitter bans people for their political opinions.

Really amazing stuff.

Haha, there are people that were on Shaggy (and here still) that presumably graduated from UT and didn't think humans contribute in any significant way to climate change (oh it's happening but the Earth always goes through warming and cooling cycles). Makes me feel less stupid about flunking out of grad school at UT.

Flunk courses, have to get reinstated, then left on my own accord. Probably could have appealed again but I was not wanting to do a PhD after 3 semesters of courses and labwork with having to TA. Thanks for making me feel bad again :( .

Hey, you brought it up!  It's not common.  I've seen people struggle to get A's and I've seen a shit-ton just quit before writing their dissertation (ahem, me).  And that TA thing is definitely a drag.  I hated it.

Was joking, but yeah going from a school where I graduated summa cum laude to a school where you have to work your ass off to get a B (at least in grad school) and not pass your courses (needing a C+ for a pass and have to keep a 3.0 GPA to remain academically eligible) after studying for hours and hours was humbling and caused me to slip into a bad depression. I am so much happier now and don't regret not getting a Masters at least.

Good deal.  Yeah, the coursework is WAY harder for sure, at least in my field.  There were definitely times where I thought "I am not cut out for this" but then I had one prof who was not exactly a rocket scientist so I figured hard work must count for something.

It's not worth depression.  At all.

As someone who has helped develop credit risk models for credit cards you have no idea how true this is.
