As much as I don't like him and will never have a facebook account, what the fuck did you fucking idiots think he was gonna do with his platform?  Newspapers ran ads saying doctors suggested certain brands of cigarettes for pregnant women.  TV Cartoons ran ads saying sugary breakfast cereals were good for child development.  And so facebook runs ads that aren't necessarily true.  Big fucking shock.  He's a fucking asshole but he doesn't deserve to take the fall for what's been happening for centuries.  That people are stupid and easily swayed by shiny shit.

Suddenly Democrats are the fucking White Knights now because maybe facebook can be corrupted for illicit gains?  big fucking shock.  Maybe my next direct mail piece from Pelosi (and I get a lot) won't be completely honest either.  Because it's marketing, it doesn't fucking have to be truthful.  Y'all's dumb fucking fault for joining the bullshit network anyway.  What the fuck did you think would happen-peer reviewed research bringing you empirical data points from the researchers the Economist found too boring?  Fucking children.

You get what you deserve.  Grow the fuck up and log off and read like adults deciding fates of nations.  Fucking morons on both sides.  Oh my god, I can't believe your senior thesis didn't come true on how you and social media would connect more like-minded people to save the rivers.

If your wife is on facebook, they can track your activity. They are tracking  her email contacts too. Is your kid on it? Then they have your shit and they probably know your twitter handle and that you frequent surly. They would know all this because they follow the facebook users and anyone who uses the same devices as the facebook users He admitted that they can track nonusers yesterday. Do you use WhatsApp? They have you then because they own it. I used WhatApp when I went to Costa Rica and used it for a while, so they have my shit too. They have your shit but is it okay because that is your fault for using the internet!

If FB should censor false or misleading political ads, then why shouldn't the TV, and radio networks have to do the same thing ?  How many political ads over the years from democrats, and republicans alike have been false, and or very misleading being blasted over the airwaves on a daily basis ?

Why is FB being singled out ?  For that matter who in the fuck relies on FB for anything more than cute bunny pics memes, and great white shark attack vids ?

Everyone relies on Facebook for all information.  Again, Russian disinformation is the ONLY reason Hillary lost.  Get that through your thick fucking skull.

Wiped with a cloth, never campaigning in Minn and Wisc, catatonic on the streets of NY had NOTHING to do with it!!!!!

Nice rant. Appropriate use of profanity, but not overly profane. Bonus for blaming everybody. However, you lose some points for completely missing the point.  B+

when a product is free, you are the product. also, it's 100% optional to ever be on facebook

Except that's its slowly becoming not optional. My daughter is in girl scouts. My wife has to be on facebook to get notices about girl scout shit. The dismal tide will get us all in the end. Or I guess I have the option of not having my daughter in girl scouts.

Its like smart phones. Used to be you could survive with just a land line. Now, you are basically Amish if you don't have a smart phone.

1. They should. They already do, to a certain extent.

2. A lot, but at least TV and radio advertisers don't get to hide behind anonymous fake internet accounts.

3. Because FB is currently the largest threat, behind on DOTARD, to our democracy. Although twitter is making a strong push.

4. Something like 2 billion people, I think?

1. I call BS.   To a certain extent ?  Did their check clear the bank would be the extent.  I see snopes and politifact reports that call many ads I've seen over the years in print, radio, and TV ads outright lies.

2.  Fair point there.

3. I'm sorry there's only room for one out there on Briskets ledge.

4.  Most of that 2 billion are not relying on them for anything beyond bunny and shark pics.  A small fraction probably do look at FB and glean their knowledge from it, but that's a negligible % and they aren't swaying elections.

People and society continue to function without Facebook.  Your wife should grow a pair and tell the GS leader to call, email, text, WhatsApp, Insta, tweet, snap, DM - whatever, Facebook is not required to be a part of an organization.

or a thousand rubles, in this case.

We're in a time where terminating your social media accounts is akin to political activism.

Who'll take the pledge?

No she doesn’t. It’s called asking the organizer to use a group text or email. It works for every baseball and softball team since group text.

I do not have any of the above.  Wife has Facebook and IG, though.

I was under the impression WhatsApp was only used for side pieces?  That’s the only context I’ve ever heard it discussed.

Yeah, damn that Constitution and its three separate branches of government, and impeachment process, and emoluments clause. Totally unfair and illegal.

it's been three years, and you still post more critically about a person that is not the president than the guy currently in office who is flouting that pesky constitution every single day.

says a lot about you.

I remember Bob Dole came to San Antonio over the summer of '96 and he pulled out a mini constitution out of his jacket pocket, held it up to us and said, "This is the Owner's Manual of our Republic.  Do yourself a favor a pick up a copy."  And he winked.  And I thought it was hokey at the time, a campaign gimmick to show he was more serious than Bill Clinton.  But it stuck with me.  And I thought about that moment when I saw him struggling to stand up to salute Bush's casket last year.  He carried it with him because it was important to him, it got him and our nation, out of more jams than we can possibly fathom.  I'd like to think Dole had that copy, or one like it, still in his jacket pocket.  And as he saluted the former President, thought to himself something like, "We did the best we could to keep the place running, eh George?"

And I listen to the way Trump disregards the constitution as some online user's agreement to be scrolled past to get on to what you really want to do.  And while I don't doubt many of you will wait days in line to walk past Trump's dead body lying in state, you won't understand the integrity of people like Dole.  And you really won't understand why so many of us anti-Trump folks are in line with you to enter the Rotunda.  We'll be alongside you for the very same reason so many Spaniards still visit Franco's grave at the Valley of the Fallen.  Because we want to make sure he's still dead.

not any longer:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/24/franco-exhumation-spain-dictator-madrid

Quote

A little before lunchtime on Thursday, a helicopter carrying a single body freshly plucked from Spain’s largest mass grave took off from the Valley of the Fallen outside Madrid, climbed above the mountains and disappeared into the bright October sky.

Unlike many of the other 33,832 people buried in the valley’s concrete and granite chambers, this individual did not meet his fate on a battlefield or in an air raid. Nor was he put up against a wall and shot, as so many were during the Spanish civil war.

Francisco Franco died peacefully at the age of 82 in November 1975, heralding the end of the dictatorship that bore his name and that haunts the country to this day. Forty-four years after his body was interred in the hulking mausoleum, it emerged in a coffin carried out of the basilica on the shoulders of eight of his descendants.

The coffin, swathed in a cloth bearing the family crest and topped with a huge laurel wreath tied with red and yellow ribbons, was brought out through the church’s heavy doors just before 1pm.

As the relatives lowered it into the hearse that would take it to the waiting air force helicopter, they let out a stentorian cry: “¡Viva España! ¡Viva Franco!”

An hour later it arrived at the Mingorrubio-El Pardo municipal cemetery north of the capital, where Franco’s widow, Carmen Polo, is buried in the family mausoleum and where the dictator was reinterred in a private ceremony.

Thursday was a symbolic but undeniable triumph for the socialist government of Pedro Sánchez, whose party has long argued that the site, surmounted by its 150-metre (490ft) cross, had glorified the dictator while ignoring the 500,000 people killed during the war.

The dead of both sides were dug up from mass graves and cemeteries around Spain without their families’ permission and brought to lie in the monument, mute witnesses reburied in their thousands to support the charade that this was a place of national reconciliation.

Only two of the graves were ever marked: those of Franco and of José Antonio Primo de Rivera, the founder of the Falangist party, who was executed by firing squad in November 1936

“Today, Spain is fulfilling its duty to itself,” Sánchez said on Thursday afternoon. “This decision marks an end to the moral insult that the public glorification of a dictator constitutes. We are taking another step towards the reconciliation that can only exist in the democracy and the freedom we all share.”

Hayden_Horn:  That article you posted is really freaking me out.  I was thinking about El Valle de los Caidos a lot this morning, a lot about modern civil wars, a lot about dictators who wrongly feel they are so beloved.  Thinking a lot about my time in Spain and how we were told by our professors not to talk to locals about the War or Franco, because it was still a fresh wound (this was in the mid-90's, just 20 years after Franco died).  I even googled La Sagrada Familia made out of Legos just to see how big someone had built one so far.  Anyway, that's why I used that example about people visiting Trump's grave for all the wrong reasons.  And his bullshit comments on the constitution got me thinking about what his sad, little funeral will look like.  There'll be lots of people there, just like Franco's.  But those that supported him in life and death, were naive.  And those that hated him are there to mark the end to a sad chapter.

And today of all days, it just so happens the leaders of Spain are removing him from that atrocity he called a burial site to a family burial site.  I like that move.  And it's creepy to me that it was all over my mind this morning, and then this happens a half a world away.  Anyway, this thing happens to me sometimes where a b-list celebrity is on my mind a lot one day for no reason, and a few days later they are dead.
