To be fair, I believe Penelope is some sort of Wall Street consultant. People never like economic models with the potential to disrupt their status.
It doesn't mean that Penelope truly believes it isn't possible to value labor over capital in a functioning economy. It just means she knows that much of the revaluation will come out of her bottom line.
We have created a world where market manipulation is seen to be more important and more "productive" than participation in the market itself.

I mean, I wasn't taking a personal shot at PW. Just mocking the idea that her "lack of real world experience" means anything given the current makeup of Congress. As I said and brisket echoed, give me soneone young and green who can speak to the life of the working class rather than some silver soon shit.

I do agree on your last point. The slow but sure expansion of the finance sector's reach is basically a tax. It's just paid to big banks, private equity, etc. instead of the state. These activities do not add value.

As an aside, silver spoons are not all that expensive. You can pick them up all day on eBay in the $20 range, probably less if you haggle a little. I bet you could get 4 place settings for the price of one second-rate phone.

So what I'm saying is that the working class could absolutely use some silver spoon shit. Imagine if they skipped a tattoo, a gadget, the occasional pair of rubber shoes, and instead bought classic (and healthy) dining accessories. They could build generational wealth because, unlike the phone, the tattoo, or the shoes, the spoons could be resold in the future for as much or more than they were bought for.

With the aesthetic lure of silver, families might be tempted to cook actual meals, and eat together, discussing philosophy or the issues of the day, with children growing up tall and handsome, instead of slumped into a couch shoving chicken nuggets into open, chewing maws.

No sir, the question is not "how could one afford silver spoons?"-- rather, it is "can one afford not to have them?"

Hearing her take to the floor to speak like that is pretty damned powerful. She is not taking anyone's shit and she would have been well within her rights to get loud and more forceful because of how she was spoken to by that professional dildo. I think the biggest issue that men have with her, especially white men, is they are refusing to accept that a woman of color believes she is their equal as a human being. Her rightful belief that she nor any other woman has to be subjected to this type of intimidation and behavior upsets their social construct and they aren't having it. I will gladly support her for standing up to this form of sexism and racism. She is young, she is fiery and she is damned good at her job. We need more people like her, Rashida Tlaib, Ayana Pressly and Ilhan Omar in the halls of Congress. If you don't like any of those women, well let me extend a hearty FUCK YOU ahead of time because you are one of the people that will gladly be left behind by people who actually care about this country.

AOC just completely neutered Ted Yoho, and the collateral damage to my "esteemed" Representative Roger Williams probably stung a bit, too.  I will be emailing him to let him know exactly what I think of his spinelessness.

She handled that absolutely perfectly -- took the high road and cast major shade.  Good for her.

Seriously.  As for "real world experience," you know what I think is REALLY fucking valuable?  Having someone in Congress whose life experience is NOT "worked for daddy's company, hung out at the country club, and cruised into office based on a campaign financed by rich contributors who expect me to return the favor," but instead is "grew up in a lower middle class household, like most of America, held menial jobs, like most of America, and busted her ass to get where she is in a working class district."  Man, that sounds like a FUCKTON of "real world experience" to me, and it's something that is miserably absent from Congress -- you know, the folks who are supposed to represent "we the people."

I've had enough of politicians who don't have any idea what it's fucking like to have to decide whether to pay the electric bill or the rent at the end of the month, who don't know what it's like to have doors slammed in your face because you don't come from the right family, or you look too "ethnic," who don't know what it's like to fucking scrap and struggle for everything you've got -- which is the lot of the MAJORITY of Americans, in one aspect or another.

We're calling HER naive and clueless?  And not the fucking class of rich, recreational congresscritters and senators who have never had to worry about paying a single bill in their entire fucking lives?  THAT is "naive and clueless," folks.

Amen.

AOC is an incredible political talent. She might still be a little insulated in the the very particular NYC progressive bubble, but I think she has the willingness and humility necessary to listen to Flyover Country and the South and shape her message in a way that speaks to everyone. She's fantastic.

Again, she's more of a "man" than anyone on the GOP side of the aisle.  I dig her.  I often disagree with her....but I dig her.  Piss and vinegar, advocacy for her constituents, using the rules and process to her advantage.

I didn't watch but from what I've read she basically called him a dogshit husband and father, which is awesome and undoubtedly correct. Did she also shit on him for his "I only called her a bitch because I love Jesus so much" nonsense?

No, she left the Jesus part out.  She definitely shamed him as a husband and father, though.

I'm not sure what your point is, but she literally said in her video (which clearly you didn't watch) she's been called that before many times, and had people escorted from her bar before for calling her that...so exactly what is the point you're trying to make here?

From Yoho's bio on his website:

Quote

His approach to government is guided by constitutional principles, limited government, fiscal conservatism, Personal Responsibility, and free enterprise. These principles keep Congressman Yoho focused on supporting bills that help make American strong.  Ted has been known to stand up and challenge the status quo for the better.

The seemingly random capitalization of "Personal Responsibility" notwithstanding, it doesn't seem as if he actually lives up to that particular part of his ethos.

The point is that he is uninterested in actual facts, and instead, finds them to be a pain-in-the-ass impediment to jumping to the conclusions he wants to reach.  Also, he is a fan of shooting himself in the dick, but I admit that I just extrapolated that from his pattern of precisely one dick-obliterating post.

I got the feeling that (regardless of watching the video) his point was pretty much that: she's been subjected to this for a long time, and Mr. Yoho doesn't get to claim immunity and specifically is supposed to be held to a higher standard as a Congressperson. Mr. Yoho failed miserably and got called out for it. Some men sincerely apologize when they offend someone. Others double down.

Fighting to eliminate the old boy's club and systemic barriers that women and minorities (and especially minority women) face in the economy does not devalue your career struggles and achievements, or make them any less admirable.

Apologies if that's not what you were implying emotionally there, but that's the vibe I got.

The number of times I've had a male resident ignore my assessment or roll his eyes at my suggestions for improving my patients' plans of care...couldn't begin to account for them. And attendings! Never an issue with non-male docs. Weird how that works.

Question for the law dogs: these cats who are solipsism incarnate - Gaetz and the like - is that a product of legal training or is it just self-selecting? Basically, are they born that way or is it a choice?

I understand the your sentiment, but AOC literally represents "send them home and starting over" She unseated a 20 year incumbent for her seat and is a young, minority woman doing a job that has traditionally been non of those things.

One, not the only, characteristic of some successful lawyers is relentless self-promotion.  Those that can sell themselves need not even be very competent, or even marginally competent.

I suspect that this is somewhat common among kids of lawyers and kids of politicians that go to law school intending a career in politics.

So, self-selection, imo.

I have zero qualifications on how to assess lawyers besides that they should have a thorough understanding of law . The ones I have met in person that I thought (or at least gave me the best impression) were the lawyers that instead of being aggressively assholey were the ones that had an understanding that life can make you look foolish pretty quick and were humble about it. I would say that makes for a good all around impression anyway, but especially for someone in that field.

I just watched that response and it's very thoughtful and compelling. The idea that she's some kind of intellectual lightweight just doesn't hold up when listening to this or much of her other work. She might step in a hole and say something stupid from time to time, but everyone does this and much of that perception is likely due to selective editing. Pretty much anything anyone says can make them look like an idiot if it's edited and framed properly.

It's hard to listen to her speak unedited and come to any conclusion other than that the Fox News framing of her is based on racism/misogyny. She's well to the left of me, but she's no doubt smart and thoughtful.

The last part is why I'm a big proponent of expanding the house. One of them anyway. Many incumbents are simply entrenched. There's a reason AOC was national news overnight, people like her don't win. And by people like her I mean, essentially, regular people.

Man did I pick the wrong time to drop that word. Hearing her today was pretty damn moving. I’ll keep my doubts to myself from here on out. If it’s any consolation, I apologize for using that term, and I will own and wear it.
That probably won’t do anything to those that called me a piece of trash, and a misogynist, but I do apologize.
Lesson learned; Don’t comment in the politics thread.

Homesick is a big boy, and he can handle himself. That said, he’s shown more humility and a willingness to listen and change his opinion and receive new information in a way folks here bemoan society in general won’t do. He’s been my friend in real life for a decade, and he’s been a rock to me when I needed him and vice versa. He’s not a misogynist. He’s not a sexist. And I’m getting beers with him tomorrow and I’m excited. You guys need pull back your own dog whistles on this shit. Not that I expect you to, this post will probably be negged to hell. By the way Penelope is a real life friend to, and she’s as whip smart and kind a person you will meet. But you guys can rip apart anyone with a smidge of an opposing opinion. I know, I’m a hell of a ripper myself. But this is a perfect example of the left echo chamber going batshit. And keep in mind I’m the guy who defended AOC and posted her video today on this thread.

@Homesickhorn, for crying out loud, if the lesson you learned is that you shouldn't post in the CR, then you really are thick. You called AOC a dizzy cunt, then when called out, just said it was a funny joke. Most people don't consider that a funny joke. You didn't seem to find anything wrong with it and argued that it was in good taste. That's a dumb opinion. But shit, dumb opinions in CR are just as common as dumb opinions in Recruiting, Basketball, or Football. Ok, that last part is a lie, nothing has as many dumb opinions as Football.

That being said, anyone who said you were a piece of trash also had a dumb opinion. Again, that happens. You got what, 2 or so negs? Maybe 3-4? If that really does scare you away then yes, please don't post here. The post I am quoting, saying it was dumb to post it? Good post, just don't take the wrong lesson from it.

And @SydneyCarton, if @Homesickhorn had made this post first instead of several posts defending it, nothing would have happened. I very sincerely say this when I say I am sure that he really is a good dude. Most people are. But most of us don't know him. If his post here is dumb, it should get called out. And the great news is it works both ways - his real life isn't affected (or shouldn't be!) by negs or posts calling him out. There was no "echo chamber going batshit". Perhaps both of you should thicken the skin just a tad.

Truth is we should all refrain from calling others names. It’s one of the biggest problems with SM integrating into RL. Name calling is beneath nearly every one of us. And this isn’t some all lives matter cop out. Yeah more so for white men in power but it applies to all of us. We should all assume the best in others. No fucking doubt AOC is sincere and wants what’s best for her constituents and our country - to think otherwise is out of touch. I’m not sure I can say the same thing about Roger Williams but I’m still not going to call him names. That’s the thing, we need to dial all of this hate crap back.
