Concerning Ocasio-Cortez's situation, wouldn't it be easier if all members of Congress were required to live in dormitories? Put the fuckers in a dorm with the basics to live off of while Congress is in session and then send their assets back home when they are out of session.

You're proposing gov't subsidized housing for members of Congress ?  The HOR-ROR !!  Oh the hor -ror...

Hack should be your middle name.  You're attitude is every thing wrong with politics in this country.

Vote the party line yep that's always the right move. I bet I've crossed party lines more this election year then you have your whole life.

I used to be a Republican. I worked for the Bush/Quayle campaign in 1988.

Having said that, you're right. I will never vote for a Republican again. That does not mean I will always vote for a Democrat.

When you say vote the way leadership tells you, that tells me you're full on bought and paid, and owned by the party, and not by your constituents.

They still run those little China Town buses between China Town NYC and China Town DC? Like, 20 bucks one way. Tiny little seats but she looks little too, she could just curl up in there and sleep or network or whatever.

Maybe rent some little closet up top of one of those Ducks Hanging in the Window with the Heads Still On Em restaurants, pay cash, nobody's gonna give her up. Life o' mystery. Cao! Cao!

I am really looking forward to her tenure in Congress.  It's going to be incredible.  What could go wrong?

Same here with Lina Hidalgo as Harris County Judge. Both under 30 with no management or government experience. You don’t put a 25 year old green attorney fresh out of law school as lead chair at a trial or transaction. What can go wrong?

Not much if there are competent non-elected officials with years of institutional experience scattered throughout the bureaucracy.

Harris County will be fine.

She definitely needs help with her math skills.  Lives in NY, wears $3000 outfits but cant afford an apt in DC area.

Yeah, that's the thing. She's not Becky Sue comin to th'Big City from Grammaw's farm in PigLick, she should already be street-wise about what rents would be and how to find deals.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't she lent those clothes for a photo shoot?

Looks like we got another Fox News viewer here.

I think it was the NY Times but whatever.  So she is pretending to be rich.  Perhaps she should move to Dallas.  She will fit right in.

The fashion department for Interview magazine lent her clothes for a photo shoot. How you turn that into AOC "pretending to be rich" is pretty funny.

It's amazing how many times this has to be repeated, but the knuckle-draggers still regurgitate it.

Yes, I am. The living conditions should be equal to what is provided for the military but more spartan and it should be mandatory for all members of Congress. No one needs to setup shop in D.C. Show up and do your job then go back home to your constituents.

I'm all for it. Congress lives a charmed life. I think they should be in their districts much more than they are. Electronic voting is something that should be considered for certain types of voting procedures.

They live a life aside from, and way above the average citizen and that's flat out wrong IMO.

Holy fuck, they are hardly ever here to begin with.  Most fly in Monday night, they fund raise and occasionally vote Tues-Thursday, then they go home on Thursday night.  It's a horrible existence.  You get up, go to fund raising bfast, come into the office for a couple of hours, maybe hit a committee meeting, head back out to a town house set up for fundraising, dial for dollars until about 3, come back for some votes, then hit the fund raising reception circuit until 10 pm.  That's if things are going on legislatively.  IF you aren't needed for votes, then it's pretty much dialing for dollars full time.

I don't think I've heard a better pitch for campaign finance reform.

Thanks for the info.  The continual dialing for dollars thing would be something you'd think would make them get on board with campaign finance. 2 years isn't enough of a term for Congress now, as you're almost continually looking for campaign donations.

However, part of the argument for congressional pay raises has been the cost of living in DC. and maintaining second homes. This would seem to make that a moot point and, it could be part of the compensation package. You're in it for the civic duty or you're not.

They can't live here, or they'll lose their jobs for being "out of touch"  Gingrich knocked off a whole pile of D's back in 94 using that. So they usually leave their families back home, take advantage of better public schools (other wise they'd have to move to the VA or MD suburbs or live on a real pricy part of Capitol Hill).  So they have to keep second homes.    For the member's with a wandering eye, that causes all sorts of problems as well.  It's like being on deployment.

The poorer ones live in their offices, sleep on the fold out.   Even the wealthier ones rent group houses.  Schumer, Durbin, and George Miller rented a house together for years, leasing out the 4th bedroom to various back benchers.  They finally gave it up about 5 years ago when Miller retired.

It's super fucked up.

For those busing out the 174K should be enough:  I make more than that pre tax, and I live in Prince George's county.  It's all I can afford.

I live in Old Town and it's not THAT bad. She could easily live here and take the King St or Ike metro into DC.

Well, that's all I could afford to buy.  I don't think the issue is what she's gonna do after she get's her January pay check, it's what she's gonna do in December during orientation. I don't think she can just crash on a couch without violating ethics rules.   She doesn't get the MRA until the 116th is sworn in.

The truth is, most of them are rich, so they just stay in a hotel.  She's not.  She's kind of a unique case, but it illustrates a lot of the problems with our political system.  there's a great story about Andy Harris, whose a first class asshole, asking about when his federal health insurance kicks in when he got here after the 2010 elections.  FEHBP is fucking sweet and I don't blame him.

I am sure someone will give her a place to sleep. Or do a few speaking gigs, rent a one bedroom in Crystal City for about 1800. Or hell, she can be one with the people and pitch a tent over the subway grates on the Mall.

I have nothing against her, but hard to feel sorry for her.

she'll have to use savings or credit.

at least she is young enough she wont have to go through the furniture purge that I had to deal with when I moved here. Try furnishing 4br homes for 15 years and then moving into a 2 br shoebox.

Lol, I it the other way.  After overpaying for tiny dumps and room mate situations, once I bought a house, I was like "Uh, how am I supposed to furnish this thing."  There's a reason I have 900 ikea hex wrenches.

Yeah, this.  I could never figure out why anyone would enjoy being in Congress and I'm a people person.

As for AOC, maybe she could live in Scott Pruitt's old apartment.

I'm in Del Ray. Shit isnt cheap. Is the issue what she does in the interim? Once she gets a Congressional salary, she's good right?

Is there another Congress critter hot enough to want to see pillow fighting Ocasio-Cortez?

Yep. She is good once she has her salary. The topic was stupid. All over America, college grads move for jobs where they can't afford to live until the job actually starts. Why should anyone her age be independently wealthy already? Most people don't have Johnny Sack's grandpa to buy them a townhome in Georgetown.

Able to shell out a few grand to bridge an unforeseen circumstance = independently wealthy. She's perfect for congress.

Says a guy in his 50s. The fact that you expect a 29 year old to afford that in an era of exponential housing cost increases and stagnant wages is the reason she got elected in the first place.

Congrats on that house you bought in 1995 though.  I am sure its worth 8 times what you paid for it.

But I did have a line of credit in 1998 and could scrounge together a float for 3 months when required. Apartments.com search returns plenty of places in DC area sub 1000 suitable for a single woman with no kids. But that doesn't serve the purpose of running to the multiple media outlets to deliver yourself up as the socialist martyr headed off to DC.

She isn't delivering herself up as anything. Y'all are just grasping at straws. Anyone can come up with 5k if they have to. She certainly has friends and family.  That would be a waste though because she can just couch surf or wait until she is employed. You know, like everyone else in their 20s who has friends.

But sure, she should sign a year lease in a crappy room share with a bunch of 23 year old interns right now, even though she will be able to afford a better place in 2 months.
