I have not researched, but maybe I will, what teams want to see in these QB combine throwing sessions.

You have QBs throwing to WRs they’ve never worked with previously and everything is working off timing.  On the deep ball, I’d probably prefer an overthrow to an underthrow even though the underthrow will be caught.

I would think they’d be interested in the QBs ability to move but also the feel on velocity.  The interviews are most important here.  There’s enough game tape on most of these QBs to evaluate their accuracy.

Also saw Bond had the 2nd fastest top end speed (not sure who was first).  That’s significant.  Just don’t ask him to lineup in a sprinters stance.

I was surprised how poor some of his competition was on the short and intermediate routes.  And yes, some of them outshined him on the deep routes.  Classic Ewers.  Still, it seems the NFL types put a lot of value on those shorter throws and Quinn kicked ass on those.  It's going to be an interesting draft.

Time to end the “Helm is an idiot for continuing the combine” crusade, man. You’ve never made a decision like he did in your life. I get that it goes against your grain.  I’ve made a few along his line and never expected the critics on the sideline to understand.

You stated your point, it’s noted, and time to course correct back to draft discussion in this thread. The rest of us are not interested in seeing the thread further derka’d or immamac’d or jimmyjazzed or ztejas’d. Fuck us all for wanting to talk draft here. Christ.

i’m gonna point out that i’m not talking to myself here. i’m allowed to respond to other posts in this thread, particularly the ones aimed at me. this post being a great example of that.

You are indeed allowed to respond, but when you respond to all of them it puts you on par with funk doctor Spock.  That’s not a place you want to be.

With this QB class Ewers is probably 2/3

He is 4th. Ward, Shaduer, Dart, and then Ewers. Dart had the best passing session at the Combine. He came in at 3. He is leaves as 3

I have seen the Shough talk. He was definitely a big winner at the combine. He is just coming from the back of the pack. I dont think he has moved to that 3/4 spot yet, but we will see.

In this instance, there's probably not a consensus on how the QB big boards are stacked other than Ward being #1 on the vast majority of boards, and Sanders being #2 on nearly as many. Dart and Shough are probably #3 on most, but there's probably some Milroe, Ewers, and even McCord or Leonard sprinkled in. After Howard sprayed the ball around, he's probably in a different tier

Some teams are going to be more down on Dart than the public facing analysts/reporters realize because they'll have concerns about the timeline for translating from his college offense to a pro one, if they think he can ever even get there. Matt Corral will be fresh in some of their minds

I assume Quinn will throw again at the Texas pro day and he will excel once more tossing to his WR's corps where the timing and feel will be even more of an advantage.

I have said for months. It seems like Word and Shadeur are locked in the 1-2 spot and I expect a ton volatility in the next group. It only takes 1 team to change the rankings. Appears to be only 2 guys that will be 1st round selections. The next group is likely in the 3rd round, perhaps someone reaches in the 2nd. I know Zerlien was saying it is a bit unusual for QBs to go in the 2nd. Teams usually draft in the 1st with the player being deemed a start level player and then usual wait to the 3rd and after.

He’s always had an easy motion so there really is no surprise there.

Did you not see the 3 “comeback” throws that were not anywhere near the mark?  Overall I was surprised so many balls hit the turf. The WRs were likely all over the place too so it’s hard to find fault.

In the end, I’d bet he goes higher than many think.  There’s a good chance one or several teams like the upside.

He was always going to be gone. It’s just a matter of when. He’s probably out this entire season with the Achilles injury. His dead cap hit is $173m this year and $100m in 2016. When the Browns bite the bullet is the question.

Sure, but he wasn't the only one.  My main point was that he threw better in a subset of the throws than anyone else.  Which, to be honest, should have been expected.  We know what he is (and isn't).

He’s Black Mamula. He’s got bust written all over him and I am here for it.

Membou and Campbell over Banks continues to astound me. Banks has better film than either of them. Banks has better measurables than Campbell. Campbell’s measurables are frankly comical. Watching these mockers overthink this is still amazing.

Probably Howard having one of the best statistical seasons in CFB history and outplaying Ewers when they faced off had something to do with it.

Everyone was knocking Banks and putting him behind Campbell because he supposedly had t-rex arms. Campbell tested better than banks in the athletic events (40 yd, broad jump, etc) but now he's the guy with short arms. Banks still tested well athletically and Banks still has much better film. If the problem with Banks has height/length, then he's addressed those concerns.

What I think will happen is that Campbell's 40 time will suddenly become the most important metric and the reason he's over Banks on the mocks. Which will confirm for me that the problem is that they just don't like Banks for whatever reason. Maybe it's just the cool thing to find a dark horse and put him over the favorite? Because Banks has had LT1 written all over him since 2022.

Jesus I heard somewhere Howard was close to 5k passing yard on the year. But he barely eclipsed 4k. Still, I’d take him over Ewers. He can run, much sturdier build, and takes a little better care of the ball.

Several of the teams in the 25-32 range need a tackle. I think one or more of them have been talking mad shit to anyone that will listen in the hopes that Banks will fall to them.

Ooof, that's a tough one. Howard had some crippling INTs this year and got bailed out by being on a super team.

I know Zerlien was saying it is a bit unusual for QBs to go in the 2nd. Teams usually draft in the 1st with the player being deemed a start level player and then usual wait to the 3rd and after.

Since 2000, 21 QBs have been drafted in the second round with none drafted in the 2nd in 2000, 2002-2005, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2022 and 2024. The successful 2nd-rounders were drafted at or near the top of the 2nd round in what was then considered to be a deep draft overall or specifically for QBs (Drew Brees, 32 overall in 2001; Andy Dalton, 35th overall in 2011; Derek Carr, 36th overall in 2014). Generally, QBs don't go in the 2nd unless it's a deep draft or they're a high-potential project for a recently-successful team. The former tend to do well (three HOF so far from the 2001 1st round with at least one more expected plus Brees at Round 2, Pick 1; multiple All-Pros) while the latter not so much (John Beck? Drew Stanton?). If you take out the statistical anomaly of 2007-2009, only 14 QBs have been drafted in the 2nd in 22 years. It looked to me like the only position that hasn't had a 2nd-rounder every year.

The outlier is 2007, when three were drafted in the 2nd round in one of the worst QB classes of all time (Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn in the 1st; Kevin Kolb, John Beck, Drew Stanton in the 2nd). The Eagles had Donovan McNabb on IR with former 49ers starter Jeff Garcia as the backup and drafted Kolb as the "future" in the 2nd when most had him projected to go in the 3rd/4th and be the 5th or 6th QB off the board. I think the Dolphins have been the biggest offender of drafting 2nd round QBs. The overwhelming majority of 2nd round QBs have been Christian Hackenburgs and Pat Whites who no one could call a sure-fire future starter or who had some question mark that was enough to keep them out of the first round in favor of an immediate or borderline-immediate contributor, but not enough to outweigh whatever buzz surrounded them and drop them to the 3rd or 4th where teams are really drafting players who could sit for a year or more and learn your system.

If Ewers is drafted anywhere in the 2nd other than the first few picks, the odds are in favor of him falling into the latter category. Given his obvious arm talent and decision-making that can be brilliant or puzzling, that's why I put him 3rd-4th. He seems to be the kind of clay a QB guru would want to work with over a year or three.

Keep in mind that the interception by Quinn was during the final drive when the game was effectively over.  The long pass play completed by Howard was when Simmons was egregiously held.

The numbers were similar.  I know you like to go with your feelings though.  Must have been rough seeing the Yankees choke on a fat Dodger dick in the World Series.

Yards per attempt being 1.5 per greater is not similar. The QBR should have been a heads up on that.

Take away the screen play of 75 yards and he was at 6.7 yards per attempt.  I mean have some context.  I know you're a big Ewers hater.  You goofed.  Get wrecked.

I can't even believe Ewers vs. Howard is even a discussion. Good grief.

I don't expect much from Ewers in the pros due to his fragility and self-sacking. I'll be surprised if he goes higher than the 3rd round because of those things, but he's got a whip, so that may be too much for someone to ignore. Watching him this season was frustrating. I'm kind of cheering for a Colt McCoy career where he's just not able to be an every week starter, but he can be a terrific backup in spurts. If that's the case, the guy could make $75M+ in a 10+ year career and look good doing it. The bust label would be avoided with a later round pick and that kind of career.

I'll be shocked if Ewers becomes a top 10-ish starter for many years in the league.

Given that I consider Ward and Sanders walking busts who will solve nothing for whoever drafts them, and guys like Dart to be flavors of the month, I think my description above for Ewers' career could make him the most successful QB in this draft.

Then some GM whose team drafts late in the 1st round is going to be fired within 3 years.

So sensitive. You look at the game, you ignore 1.5 yards per attempt more, the 75 more yards rushing by Howard, the higher QBR, and higher QB rating and come to the conclusion its basically the same. Of course, you do the typical fan nonsense and say take out this play and that play from the opposition and pretend that is a logical exercise.
