With Blue ripping off a pair of sub-4.3 sec 40s I'm not sure if he goes that far down.

I get that, but he wasnt even a starter for Texas. Possible someone falls in love with the speed, but top 3 rounds seems crazy given the film.

Roschon didn't start either.

Roschon didnt get benched and he played with Bijan. There is huge difference between losing your job and carries to Wisner compared to Bijan. Not to mention Rojo didnt go in the top 3 rounds and he was a special teams asset.

He's got elite speed, so he'll get drafted by someone who thinks they can scheme around it. But where does he play in the NFL? What does he do? He's not big enough, can't run inside, and has too many ball security issues to be a starting RB. He's probably not big enough to pick up blitzing LBs nor are his hands good enough to be a third down back. Is he a returner like Turpin? He wasn't our primary kick return guy, and with his hands, not sure he can be trusted to cleanly field punts. I'm just not sure where he plays in the NFL.

This is a super deep RB draft and Blue still can’t run inside and has major fumble issues. 4th round would be a great result for him.

7 round mock on ESPN. Probably as good as you could ask for from a Texas player point of view.

Barron - 9 to NO - Rd 1

Golden - 18 to SEA - Rd 1

Banks - 23 to GB - Rd 1

Ewers - 40 to NO - Rd 2

Collins - 46 to ATL - Rd 2

Mukuba - 56 to BUF - Rd 2

Bond - 74 to CAR - Rd 3

Williams - 100 to SF - Rd 3

Helm - 110 to NYJ - Rd 4

Sorrell - 118 to ATL - Rd 4

Majors - 122 to DEN - Rd 4

Blue - 124 to GB - Rd 4

Broughton - 169 to BUF - Rd 5

Conner - 215 to LV - Rd 6

This would be insanely great

The NFL is obsessed with speed.  Has any RB in this draft class had a better 40 than Blue, either at the combine or their pro day?

I don't think the part time nature of his play matters so much as his ball security issues.  Of course, those are interconnected.

Only 14 picks in the first 6 rounds?

That’s better than the Charlie & What’s-His-Name (Tom?) eras combined, no?

I dont know the Pro Day 40 times. Those are usually faster than the combine. I know Omarian Hampton put on an absolute show at 6' and 221 pounds

2 other guys were sub 4.4.

He'd have be paired with a pounder.  One a team already has, or be one of 2 taken in this draft...like Martinez(Miami) and Blue would be a nice thunder/lightning backfield.

4.46 sec 40, and he didn't run at his pro day.

You'll note I never suggested that Blue should be considered a better prospect than Hampton.

OK?  It doesn't appear he was scored.  I don't know why.  I don't know if there is any value in "RAS".  Are you suggesting Jada Byers from Virginia Union is a better prospect?

I honestly don't know what you're on about.

I am guessing Blue did not do enough events to be scored. I think he only did the 40. I dont even know where the Jada comment comes from, but I'll assume you believe it to be relevant. I posted the RAS scores to show that this is seriously deep and athletic RB group.

Jada Byers is the lowest scored RB, and his measurables are laughable.  There are many others who aren't scored.,

Yes, it's a deep RB class.  It's also entirely possible a team will take a flyer on a guy with extremely rare foot speed.  That's all.  I'm really not interesting in arguing this with you any more, you are clearly not understanding my point.  But thanks, Mr. Pro Scout, for the education (and "RAS" LMAO).

When I was saying 16 were possible that was if all the guys left. Campbell and Taaffe would absolutely have been drafted. That espn mock was basically what I was calling as best possible chance. I still think Holmes, boldin and Gbenda have greater than 10% chances of getting drafted. Players were all saying 15 or more. I’m not 100% sure all our combine invites get drafted, but that’s now gone from wishful thinking to chalk scenario I think.

Yeah i'm sure the people at the combine are who messed up.

This actually does appear to be a thing.

Random additional comment on Jaydon Blue:  some draft afficionado named Matt Miller was on local ESPN radio this morning and he said Jaydon Blue had the most potential to start in the NFL of all projected 3rd and 4th round RB picks.  Take it for what it's worth, which is exactly what you paid for it.  He praised Blue's speed, slashing and pass-catching, criticized his fumbles, and said he needs more lower body strength, particularly to run inside.  Nothing ground-breaking but more praise than some would offer.  He also projects Blue at #124 (lower 4th), and thinks he is a bargain at that slot.

My wife will weigh in next.

I'm not saying he's wrong, but Matt Miller is a big Texas fan. He talks up the Longhorns a lot (which is great!), but grain of salt, yadda yadda.

This has been weird with Golden. The former PFF guys (now Check the Mic) - who I like and think are pretty reasonable and aren’t hot-takey - were doing their top 10 WRs this week and had Golden pretty low, and the rationale was that nobody thinks he’s really that fast. Even argued that there must have been an error on his combine time. Now this about “field speed.”

It is funny because the entire purpose of the combine is to add objective information to subjective scouting analysis. If you’re going to dismiss some guys’ combine performance because it doesn’t confirm your subjective position, then you shouldn’t factor anybody’s combine performance into your evaluation. But these guys keep citing other players’ times and jumps when lauding them.

Even funnier, I listened to these guys say that there was consensus that Golden’s time was some kind of error or that he didn’t “play that fast,” then I read this this morning from espn’s Yates:

“I like when combine numbers match the tape, and Golden’s 4.29-s forty yard dash unequivocally does.”

So…not consensus, I guess?

Gosh, I wonder if there could be some way to confirm his combine times.  Maybe, I don't know, THE FUCKING VIDEO?

So, yes, one of the CTM guys said that he reviewed the video of Golden’s run “frame by frame” and somehow claimed it was impossible that he could have run a 4.29. I wasn’t listening closely enough to grasp why it was impossible or what exactly he discovered, but he also had no explanation as to why there was this one false time in the entire combine.

They were also talking about “feeling” guys’ speed, at which point I kinda tapped out.

If the guy wasn't a raving lunatic he could count those frames and compare to the same frame count of other similar times.  If the frame counts are the same (or very close) either the times are close or the frame rate is different in multiple videos, which I find extremely unlikely.

I realize that at the end of the day none of this pre-draft opining makes any difference, and that guys trying to get clicks and listens can’t just all say the exact same thing, but I don’t recall this degree of scrutiny over a guy’s combine 40 time.

Golden took the top off the defense several times this year.  Ewers just couldn’t deliver a good enough pass.

This is part of the problem, he doesn’t have a ton of highlight film showing him beating people deep because his QB couldn’t get the ball to him.

Coming in to this season, Golden had 76 catches and 13 TDs.  Bond had 65 and 5.

Golden now has 134 catches and 22 TDs and a season best 17.4 per catch.  Bond is at 99, 9 and 15.9.  Looking at numbers last year regarding Mitchell, there weren’t many high WR draft picks that didn’t compile over 100 catches.

Golden was open quite a bit here from the getgo. There’s a good chance he was always better than Bond.  People just didn’t identify because of their biases.  Combine numbers reflect Bond is faster.  That was assumed from the outset and hasn’t changed.

Im not sure I’d take Golden in the 1st round, but there’s a lot to like about his game.  And you can support it with production and individual highlights.

Pretty certain Bond had the second fastest top end speed.  Thought Bond was 2nd behind the DB.

I never said Bond was quicker to 40.  Pretty sure dudes beat Usain Bolt to 30-40 yards too.  Were they faster than him too?

Semantics.  You're using top end speed, others are using time to 40.  Different measures, both have value.
