They are basing it on a book written by the son, who inherited very little of his father's writing ability.  The last couple of books he wrote to finish out the original saga are not great.

While the sequels and prequels written by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson are not that great, they are based on very extensive notes left by Frank Herbert and they are interesting to see how he envisioned the entire chronicle

Dude, half of the books the father wrote were complete shit.  God Emporer of Dune is one of the worst books I've ever read.  I still don't know why I finished it.

Listening to it now. It’s rough. Basically the god emperor telling the reader ad nauseam that he’s smarter than everyone and he’s bored.

I'll watch.

My one nitpick is that you'd think with a 10,000 year gap there would be different technology and fashion.

I suppose you could assume that a stagnating civilization would experience a decrease in technological advancement, and perhaps even regression if powerful regimes acted to prevent the general public from having access to it, in an effort to repress them.  Asimov hits on this with respect to Empire in the Foundation series, and it isn't until Seldon and the First Foundation come along, that technology begins advancing rapidly again.

As for fashion, it's cyclical and comes and goes.  So obviously what was fashionable 10,000 years ago, would eventually come back... :)

God Emperor of Dune was pretty bad as well.

I've only read the first book, started on the second, and done half-assed research, but wasn't there a war against what was essentially AI. The backlash to AI and computing is what made spice so important.

That might explain the lack of progress.

As far as clothes go... I've worn the same 4 shirts for 15 years.

Yes, the empire arose from the ashes of human/AI wars.  The human victory resulted in a complete ban on artificial computing devices.  Therefore, the spice became necessary for space travel, and human Mentats were developed for computing requirements.  All of that resulted in minimal to no technological advances.

Kind of agree. Kind of disagree. Everything in Dune is analog. Does a telephone from the 1880 work better than a phone in 1920?

They can make technological improvements, but it’s going to be very, very slow moving because no computers.

I love the Dune universe, it’s difficult to mess it up so badly that I won’t like it.

I’d like to believe they won’t fuck this up, but these are the same people that recently canceled Winning Time: Rise of the Laker Dynasty.

I'm intrigued. Let's see where it goes.

Yeah I really liked it.

I am well aware it is not going to be the movies and I'm not setting myself up for disappointment by immediately comparing it to Villanueva's Dune.

"Cuties" plural? There is one hot chick in this show, which is an abysmal failure for the casting agent that needed to find 20+ young girls for the school.

I finally got around to watching Dune 2.  I was not surprised at how disappointed I was in it.  I doubt if I will even bother if there is another.  I watched the first episode of Prophecy and was intrigued enough to give it a chance.

You like HBO Dune but not Dune part 2?

Dune Prophecy draws from the Dune universe without trying to directly depict any of the books.  It especially did not completely trash one of the, if not the, greatest science fiction books ever written with the implementation of its completely flawed vision.  I didn’t say I liked Dune Prophecy, but rather was still willing to give it a chance to show me its version of the Dune universe.

Not everything is about tits and ass my dude.

I was reminded of the show’s turbulent history on some podcasts this morning. DV was originally supposed to be the director/showrunner. What could have been. 3 showrunners and 8 years later, this is the end product.

I’ll count my blessings, and say it could be a lot worse. I hope they wrap up Hart’s storyline and move on to another Dune project. That might be exactly what Max does. They only ordered 6 episodes.

It’s not terrible it’s just kind of boring. Travis Fimmel plays “unhinged” as well as anyone though.

I think there was entirely too much exposition until it got to the real story. I think that’s why it felt “boring” because 20 min was intro and then we time skipped

Were the Bene Gesserit fighters in any of the books? That seems odd. I’ve only read the first two.

Yes, they were trained to fight.

They brag about full control of every muscle fiber in their body and are trained to be like winter soldiers when needed.
