The production quality looks a little Syfy Network to me, but I hope it’s good.

Counterpoint:  The Expanse.  SYFY did a fantastic job, really really good given the scale and world building on that one.

I finally got around to watching Dune 2.  I was not surprised at how disappointed I was in it.  I doubt if I will even bother if there is another.  I watched the first episode of Prophecy and was intrigued enough to give it a chance.

Wait what? I loved both Dune movies, but Dune 2 blew the first one out of the water...one of the best Sci Fi movies in a very long time.

Sometimes they really go to balls to the walls with production and really spare no expense.

And sometimes they don't.

Just depends on the show/property.

That’s because he’s pre sardaukar and Salusa Secundus hasn’t been turned into a wasteland yet

I'm not sure this is true, and it seems unclear to me.

In the books, the Battle of Corrin, which is what leads to the establishment of house Corrino and the imperium, has nothing to do with the Butlerian Jihad (the war with the thinking machines). In fact, it all happens in the WAKE of the Jihad, decades later, and it's a political conflict. It seems that, in the show, they've made the Battle of Corrin be the ultimate battle against the machines that ends the Jihad.

I could be wrong, but I believe the Sardaukar would have already existed either way, not necessarily as the empire's standing army, but definitely as an existing military force.

Not entirely sure the writers knew they only had 6 episodes bc this was a lot of nothing burger

I don't think I agree. I thought that the flashback scenes were great, especially Tula's. Really helps flesh out their characters and motivations. I really enjoyed that episode.

Spoiler

Spoilering because duh:

Also, the revelation that an AI is behind the Bene Gesserit's breeding program is kind of a bombshell for Dune lore.

The Sardaukar evolved from the prisoners dumped on Salusa Secundus after the Emperor began using it as a prison planet

This is why it's murky...Herbert never delves into the history of the Sardaukar. What is "known" is only what House Corrino wants everyone to know.

In the Dune Encyclopedia, the Sardaukar originate from the Sardau tribe native to Salusa Secundus, and House Corrino is founded by the Sardaukar leader.

The Butlerian Jihad destroyed the thinking machines on all of the human planets except Corrin. The Battle of Corrin was the battle to destroy the artificial overmind that had previously controlled all of the thinking machines.  I think it is worth reading the prequel novels co-written by Hebert's son because I believe that their plots followed the outlines of the history of the Dune universe made by Frank Hebert.

Yeah this is where it gets murky, is what I'm saying. In the expanded universe written by Herbert's son, etc, yeah this is what happened and it seems the show is building on that. Dune Encyclopedia (written by a friend of Herbert, contributed to by Herbert, and based on a lot of Herbert's notes) says it was a battle between Lansraad houses.

In the latter, the Sardaukar definitely existed prior to the imperium, in the former it's not spelled out but they probably existed as one of the armies fighting against the machines. It's kind of telling the show has made no mention of them, though.

I don’t get the politics on this show. I thought the entire purpose of the Imperium was to

- Keep the spice flowing.

- Balance the Great Houses so one house doesn’t become so powerful they can take on the emperor.

- Keep the Great Houses separate and apart so they can’t gang up on the Imperium.

The Harkonnens are living in exile and eating hairy whales. No family atomics or shit Glowglobes in sight.

The Atreides are in good standing and living on their ancestral home world Caladan. Family atomics for days.

A Harkonnen wipes out most of the Atriedes Line including the Duke and his heir and… the Imperium allows the perpetrator and her sister to join the Bene Gesserit, and their uncle and his heir to live. Imperium doctrine would dictate all of the Harkonnens be put to the sword. Maybe a plans, within plans type thing, but the Harkonnens are so low on the totem pole, that the other Great Houses would be outraged if they weren’t severely punished.

And finally, the emperor is completely cool with 2 Harkonnens running the Bene Gesserit?! A house the Imperium exiled, now runs one of the most powerful and secretive organizations in the galaxy. Dafaq?! It’s completely illogical.

All that said, decent to good show and I’m happy to watch more Dune.

I thought it was pretty good, the actress playing the young Emily Watson character is nails so far.

But goddamn, 60+ minute episodes make me feel like the sleepy old man that I am. I really don't enjoy that trend with the big budget series.  I'm yelling at clouds, but I really prefer the 50ish minute format.  Sure, the density of the story may necessitate it at times, but it feels like they are doing it just because they can.

I'm generally not a big fan of hour+ long episodes, but it's a good measuring stick for me personally that if I don't find myself looking at my phone unless I think it's absolutely necessary, then I'm connecting with the show even if it's "too long" by my estimation. I had a couple of those moments with the first 2 episodes but not with the 3rd. Hoping that indicates good things for the 2nd half.

Yeah, I fell asleep a lot.  Not the case with ep 2 but the boob sightings prob kept me awake.

I wish they did a better job of explaining The Water of Life. Basically, a fully trained Reverend Mother is in such complete control of her body that she can break down the poison at molecular level so it doesn’t kill her during the ordeal.

The imagery sucks. Not at all what’s described in the books. It’s not some scary ghost ladies overwhelming the participant. During the ordeal, they experience the memories of every reverend mother that has ever lived and they can look back into time. It’s trippy, not terrifying. I’m not sure why DV or Prophecy depicts it this way. You need a director like David Lynch to get it right on film.

I agree the posters above. The 3rd episode was the best. This probably should have been the pilot. Also, I know my posts sound like I’m not enjoying the show. I am. There are just a few things they can do better.
