Breckyn Hager thread of insanity and hair dominance

Sorry to keep you waiting. Maybe my original tone was too harsh, as OU has a lot of talent on the online, no doubt. However, Georgia is a much more power run type offense and they have ran the ball with tremendous success against just about everyone this year, including Alabama. When i said scheme, I was speaking specifically about their blocking schemes and run play design. Deandre Swift and Elijah Hollifield are both better backs than what OU has had, post Rodney anderson. I stand by my original point that this will be the stiffest year our front seven has seen this season.

I think this stuff is the wrong thread, but.....I think you’re missing one very important point.

De’andre Swift will be the best back Texas faces all year. The measurable difference between OU and Georgia’s lines are that OU has a good enough line for average running backs to get some yards.

Georgia’s line only needs to create a small crease and Swift will be behind the linebackers facing guys that will not only not like tacking him. I’m not so sure they can one on one. Holyfield is physical as well. But absolutely nothing compared to Swift.

Again, this will be the best running back that Texas will have faced over the last several years. Texas must sell out to not let Swift break contain or it will be a long day. And he has a knack for cutting back once past the LOS and getting an additional 15 because the defense has moved laterally and allowed voids along the line. The guy is a true NFL running back. Make Fromm beat us.

Wow. Texas shouldn’t bother to show up. Georgia has a team full of the best nfl backs ever, the biggest and most powerful o-line ever and even worse their entire defense has teddy lehman speed. I believe they won the superbowl in 1999 as sperm.

Which is weird, since when a slant or any stunt is on, specific gaps are occupied/accounted for.  Which for the LB's means they should flowing quick, directly to a spot, while eating up bodies on the OL keeps them clean, it also requires them to read and react.  They should play "faster" with stunts on than with them off.

I think we stunt against Georgia often, in an effort to create negative plays and make them throw to beat us.

I’m sure we’ll try that. I’m sure Wheeler will fail to cover his gap and Georgia will run on us like Oklahoma St and WVU.

Not in our dime package.

Now, when we went nickel against ISU, Wheeler looked all-conference.

Folks, OUs line has 3 legit first rounders and 5 projected NFL players.  They average 320 across the line, which includes a RS Freshman at center, arguably the toughest position on the line.  They are playing their 5th back on the depth chart (Brooks) after losing 3 for the season (Anderson, Sutton, Pleger) and another for a good chunk of the season (Sermon.)  Despite this, they still run the ball better than most teams in the country.  That is on the O-line.

I've seen Georgia.  Georgia will not present the problems up front that  OU did.  I am encouraged that we really limited their run game and I think we can do the same to Georgia.  Fromm, IMO, is not as accurate as Murray, certainly is not the run threat, and doesn't have the targets Murray has.  We can absolutely compete with them when we are on defense.

Now, our offense may be challenged against their D, but I think we can win this game.

I will have what you are having. Sign me up.

He got worked on Saturday. This is like 5% of the amount of time he spent on the ground. No disrespect to him, but it was essentially 11 on 10 when he was on the field. Complete non-factor.

Just putting it on this page for any newcomers.

Hager is a strange Dude that was not meant to play DL on a 3-Man front.

Decent end rusher on 3rd downs.... Doubtful he plays NFL, maybe he plays in Canadian Football League.

Hope he adjusts ok to life after football....

This. He's a 3rd down pass rush specialist LB who added weight and played on the line allowing the freshmen to get a year of S&C and coaching.

If the media didn't love him for a quote he'd be respected for being a team guy.

Yep. Probably should have kept his mouth shut. Also, show this to our line how to finish plays. Those OL played nasty. They didn’t just drive him to the ground they gave him seconds shots too.

I watched the game again yesterday, focusing strictly on ousux offensive line, and our defense.  What I saw was puzzling to say the least.  #90 replacing Hager had much better luck fending off blocks and clogging up traffic and staying engaged in the play, as did #49(?).   While Hager took a beating most of the game, it was noticeably worse in the 4th quarter where it was actually painful to watch.   The thing that really struck me odd is that on several plays, instead of staying engaged, he would wander to another ousux lineman who was already being blocked and shoulder check him in the back or side instead of pursuing  the runner who was just on the other side.  At other times he "chicken fought" or danced back and forth and never made contact (pass plays).   There's others but they are very had to describe in writing.

I wish the guy the best, I know he was hurt, but it was really odd some of the things going on.

Thanks TFB for clearing things up by telling us what didn't happen... any chance you might be able to enlighten us and clear things up by actually telling us what did happen?

So what's the deal with his hair?  Since he was waiting to win the conference title to cut it and now he won't ever be able to do that, is he forever going to have the Fabio look the rest of his life?

If it gets long enough he can braid it into a lasso and use it to catch QBs even while lying flat on his back.

IMO, although he said he hates it and would cut it when Texas won a conference championship, I think he really has grown to like it as it's befitting of his manufactured "outlaw/tough guy" image.

He can always keep it until Texas wins the conference whether he's gone or not and technically still keep his word.

It was all in God's plan and was already written.

Is it possible he tried to cut his hair with the knife and that's what caused the cut?

I had to come check the thread to see if how he cut his hand had been confirmed. I heard (second hand, which means it must be true) that he cut his hand with a big ass knife that he was using to cut his hair off following the OU loss. I feel like there's a metaphor in there somewhere. Anyways, that will be $9.95.

if he had been a great player his little song and dance would’ve been all-time great.  we would’ve eaten it up with a spoon.

it wasn’t so palatable with him being a major disappointment on the field.

Hager is an interesting case study. How many philosophy majors play college ball? I've known a few philosophy majors, and they were all odd.

The recognition came mostly from his name and odd behavior. Not sure Texas would have offered him if he wasn't a legacy.

He's also a case study in how being recruited by a big name school affects the star rating recruiting sites use. If a player is recruited by Alabama, he'll go up. I think Hager bumped from two to three stars because he went to Texas.

A few years ago, some site (too lazy to look up) did a study of recruiting ratings vs on field performance. Baylor and TCU were the only ones who outperformed their ratings in the B12. Gary Patterson flat out stated that he got amused watching a player rating drop if they signed with TCU. He said if a player recruited by TCU and (I think Oklahoma, maybe Texas) signed with the big name, they became a four star. If they signed with TCU, they dropped a star.

He was a good Buck LB, taking on OL in space using speed and quickness.  He is not suited to play power games with OTs from a 4i alignment where size and strength trump ability to move since there's just so much less opportunity to do so at that position.  I'd have preferred a journeyman DE with Hager staying at the standup hybrid position but the coaches seem to feel they needed him inside.

He was good when he wasn’t having to play as many downs either. And after his injuries in the middle of the season, which came in back to back games, he was a shadow of even himself. Can’t ever question his effort. He just wasn’t in the best place for him to be able to make plays, and his body wasn’t either in the 2nd half of the season.

Agreed. If people want to diss Hager for being a goofball, yeah, he's guilty. As far as his play on the field, he did about as much as he could with the skills God gave him.

He had no business being a starter. If there is some unwritten rule about legacy’s getting a spot so be it. But the kid isn’t a DI player.

Your football takes get worse by the day.

He's not an above-average P5 starter. He's being asked to play a position he's not at all suited to play, and as a result he's a JAG at best on this defense. But if you watched this team at all last season, you would see that Hager has a place as a rotational pass rusher coming off the edge standing up for a lot of decent squads.
