There's not much to tell... dad was a diplomat for Taiwan, we lived around the world.

My best friend in high school (in Germany) said he'd applied for UT, so I went to Austin, got my BS, went to Cal to get my MS, back to Austin to work for 8 years before I got my green card in 2005. Waited the mandatory 5 years before I could apply for citizenship, but decided to wait because, I dunno why. Finally applied for it in 2015, aced the citizenship test (complete joke) and got sworn in.

Being a US citizen doesn't feel much different compared to being a permanent resident except for the fact that it's a whole lot easier to travel with a US passport instead of a Taiwanese passport.

In the 31 years I've been in the US, I maybe broke the law a few times but never arrested. Paid 18 years of taxes before I became a citizen, and another 9 years since. I married a 1st generation women from Taiwan. Both of us are fluent in English, no accent, together we have 2 American kids who use the word "like", "dude" and "gyat" more than I can stand. I'm more integrated into society and have more non-Asian friends, but then again we're in Orange County and there aren't many non-Asian people to choose from to become friends.

But I thought Asians fled from Orange County.

@Superhero I neutralized the phrase by over using it and adding the cringe factor.

I recently used it at the gas station when an older gentleman with a very large butt was at the nearby gas pump.

"Look at that gyat! I could cut open a cheek for warmth like Luke did with that tauntaun."

My daughter "dad, I don't know what that means but please stop using that word."

Most of us have parents or grandparents who used to recite the Pledge with the "Under God" portion while doing the Bellamy Salute.  Now known better as the Heil Hitler gesture.  Even as an elementary school kid, I always thought the Pledge ritual in the morning was so odd.  And I was raised by generations of veterans and public servants.  It's still so odd to me, like my wife anointing my children with holy water before mass.  Either the ideals of the county or christ live in your bones of they don't.  No hand gestures or repetitive speech is gonna change that.

csb/ In law school, I think it was for CivPro, we went to a swearing-in ceremony for buncha folks in Sacramento.  And it folks from East Asia and Latin America and all points in between.  It was really cool to see.  A bunch of my mother's family was born in Mexico and didn't have proper documentation even until their deaths.  But it was a simpler time.  But I remember these people were all speaking different languages to one another after the swearing-in.  And one person's relative would translate and then another and another.  And the most wonderful aspect of it was they were discussing, aside from the joy of citizenship and new opportunity, was the wonderment of the U.S. Constitution.  They had to learn parts of it for the "test" as we all know.  But they would speak about how amazing it was, so different from anything their home country had.  And they spoke to details that even I didn't know despite literally being there for a law school course based on the Constitution developed by then SCOTUS Justice, Anthony Kennedy.  These people not just learned it by rote, they embraced it.  They were warmed by its light.  They were living it.

And now I gotta listen to tens of millions of fucking abject morons start conversations, "You know, as a natural born citizen and student of the constitution."  I'll take that Sacramento courtroom of dedicated immigrants over most Texans any day of the fucking week.  Congrats to all our new citizens.  We don't make it to the next thing without you....

We're you having a stroke while typing this post?

My smoking hot Brazilian wife got her GC last month so this hits close to home.  She hasn’t left my dumbass yet so that’s a good sign. Can’t wait to do it all again in 3 years for the citizenship.

I think if you say "Immigrant" into a mirror 3 times, she either gives gives you a Broadway shoe happy ending or murders a Vietnamese masseuse new to our shores.  Or her husband gets a handjob in a bowling alley from the Vietnamese woman's sister or something.  This fucking simulation.  Even my sick ass can't keep up with it anymore.

My nephew met his Brazilian wife while he was in the Navy. They met somewhere in Europe, Italy I think. Currently, does offshore oil rig work and then stays in Brazil with his wife's family. I initially thought he was doing what you described above but then I saw pictures of the in-laws home. Now I assume his in-laws are Brazilian cartel or something.

Generally you are either very rich or dirt poor there. Not a lot of in between.

Makes me wonder if your dad had been born before my family moved from Taipei to Austin (1959).

You should just go back to your glue sniffing addled ways

Well I'll give you credit for this one.  I was expecting "glue snuffing addled ways" as though you were taking out another horse.  Anyway, I'm an immigrant to this country.  And I thank you for your tremendous patriotism.  I'm sure you're swell in real life.  But you remind me of every guy that starts every business meeting with "Well as a native Texan...."  The thing you're the most proud of is the thing you had nothing to with.  I bet you controlled your eye color, your dominant hand, and your dietary restrictions.  You fucking child.

My dad is probably older than you. He turns 84 this year.

In 1959, he would have still been in high school and 2 years before moving to Taipei for college.

Yeah he’s got me beat - I was in junior high at Taipei American School which at that time was located downtown (it was later moved to a new campus in the suburb of Tienmu where we lived north of the river (next to Beitou District).
